The Drag Racing Association of Women will be holding their annual
auction at the United Association Route 66 Raceway NHRA National event
in Joliet, IL, on Saturday, June 6, 2009.  There will be the usual
silent and live auctions.

DRAW needs items for the live and silent auctions they host during the
2009 racing season. Those auctions include: the large annual silent and
live auction held at the Joliet, IL, spring race and a live auction
held at the September race in Ennis, TX.   Small silent auctions are
held throughout the race season.

specification will change from 68 inches to 70 inches.

2-Effective March 1, 2009, the V-Rod Destroyer class records will be

and fuel injection/RPM limits instituted for the 2009 season.

BERNSTEIN HAS BRISTOL HISTORY

Brandon Bernstein, driver of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, comes to the Thunder Valley b_bernstein.jpgNationals May 15-17 on the heels of a runner-up finish at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis.

It was his third final round showing in seven events.

“We would like to seal the deal in Bristol,” said Bernstein.  “We have
performed well in Bristol in the past, and it’s a track where we really
enjoy competing.

BRISTOL TICKET WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the CompetitionPlus.com Decade of Thrills Thunder Valley Nationals ticket giveaway thundervalley_nats.gifhave been determined.

Gary Gibson, an expedited freight deliverer from Franklin, N.C., was
the grand prize winner. The 181th entrant in the giveaway, Gibson and
his family will receive two pairs of Full Event Thunder Valley
Nationals tickets as well as admission into the prestigious Thunder
Valley Club hospitality. He will also receive additional prizes.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting this,” Gibson said Friday when notified
of the win. “I’ve been a CompetitionPlus.com reader for about as long
as it’s been on the Internet. I read it every day and when I saw the
contest, I figured I would sign up. I figured I didn’t have much to
lose.”

ENCORE SUNDAY: MOUNTAIN MOTOR PRO STOCK, THE EARLY YEARS

8-10-07mmps.jpgTed Jones had an open-door
policy with IHRA founder Larry Carrier, and while he tried to not wear out his
welcome, on a fall day in 1976 he couldn’t resist bringing his idea to the
boss.

Jones was the VP of
Competition for the five-year-old sanctioning body, and little did he know that
his intuition would one day change the way the Pro Stock division would be
contested. The IHRA was always searching for its niche in a drag racing world
dominated by the National Hot Rod Association, and to a point the now-defunct
American Hot Rod Association.

Jones wanted to do away
with the status quo for the Pro Stocks. He was tired of following the NHRA’s
lead of factoring cars into competitiveness, and the aggravation that came
along with policing it. His idea of throwing the standard formula of pounds to
cubic inch out the window had the potential to be taken one of two ways – (A)
the greatest thing since sliced bread or (B) downright blasphemous. The bottom
line is that Jones had to deal with the never-ending issue and not Carrier.

“It was a nightmare
without end because you always had to adjust the rules,” Jones, who now owns a
television production company, said. “You had several weight breaks and they
were for every combination under the sun. You had them for staggered valves,
cylinder heads, wheelbase, and so on and so forth.

“Most every Pro Stocker
had to run a small block because if you didn’t, you’d have to run so much
weight that it was unreasonable and the parts breakage for running such a heavy
combination was unreal. It was a real headache.”

CLASSIC VIDEO REWIND - 1975 ROCKINGHAM

This rare video gem was broadcast on Speedvision and features coverage
of the 1975 IHRA Pro Am Nationals, the traditional spring race hosted
by Rockingham Dragway. Back in the day the IHRA provided an alternative
to the larger NHRA and to be honest, the racing wasn't that bad. You'll
see in this two-part video rewind footage of Don Garlits, Shirl Greer,
Raymond Beadle, Bob Glidden, General Lee Edwards and more. It's just
the perfect video for a holiday weekend.

FORCE HOOD: CONTINUITY WINS

nfc winner3.JPGThe secret to Ashley Force Hood’s success in the last two seasons doesn't revolve around a magic tune-up.

Nor is it an unlimited operating budget. It’s not even the guidance of her 14-time championship winning father.

Force Hood adamantly contends that it’s not rocket science.

It’s the same principle that Tony Schumacher boasted of during his reign of terror in Top Fuel.

For Force Hood the key to her strong running Castrol Funny Car is simply -- continuity.

ALPHA NATURAL RESOURCES BECOMES PRESENTING SPONSOR OF NHRA CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Several of NHRA’s top names are scheduled to play in the annual NHRA
celebrity golf tournament at the Country Club of Bristol on Thursday,
May 14.

Alpha Natural Resources has come on board to support the event and will
partner with the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities for
the tournament. This is the sixth year of the event, now called the
Bristol Dragway Celebrity Golf Benefit presented by Alpha Natural
Resources.

“Investing in the youth of our region is just one of the many ways that
Alpha Natural Resources returns value back to the area,” said Kevin
Crutchfield, President of Alpha Natural Resources.  “We are proud to be
associated with Speedway Children’s Charities. We are able to
participate in this tournament thanks to our dedicated group of miners
who work everyday to provide a solution to America’s energy needs.”

BRISTOL DRAGWAY’S FAN FEST PROVIDES ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH DRIVERS

Fans taking in the action during Saturday’s activities of the May 15-17
NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals will have one more thing to add to their
“Must Do List” after the on-track festivities come to an end.

At the conclusion of Pro Qualifying on May 16, several of NHRA’s
biggest names will head to Bristol Dragway’s Fan Fest celebration to
sign autographs and interact with their fans.  Fan Fest offers one more
chance to get up close with the same stars that roar through Thunder
Valley on a quest for victory.

In addition to the drivers, Surviving Salem will be on stage to throw
down their latest tracks. The band, which hails from East Tennessee,
performs a varied play list including Classic Top 40, Hard Rock, Metal
and Blues.

COUGHLIN TRAVELS DIFFERENT PATH TO THE TOP

Jeg Coughlin Jr. has won four Pro Stock world titles in his illustrious drag racing career and each j_coughlin.jpgone
has been distinctly different from the others. Maybe that explains why
he's taken such an unorthodox course to the 2009 points lead.

In 2000, the 44-time national event winner dominated the field at the
start of the season and rode his early success to his first title. In
2002, the opposite happened and Coughlin rode a late-season surge to
secure the hardware.

When the NHRA went to a two-tier playoff system in 2007, Coughlin
successfully stayed in the hunt until the last race of the season when
he eked out his third crown over a worthy trio of contenders. Once
again in 2008, he cooked up a different formula during the expanded
six-race playoff series and won his fourth championship with air to
spare.
