ANOTHER ANGLE OF RICK STIVERS ST. LOUIS CRASH

CompetitionPlus.com reader Reuben Martel captured what could be
considered one of the best photo sequences of the Rick Stivers crash at
the recently completed O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis.
Stivers was uninjured in the crash.

HAMMONDS PARKS TEAM BRIEFLY

Tom Hammonds announced today that his NHRA Pro Stock race team will be
sitting out the next few races on the Full Throttle Series tour
beginning with this weekend's NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol
(Tenn.) Dragway. Hammonds is confident that the hiatus is temporary,
and hopes to return to racing as soon as sufficient sponsorship is
secured to run competitively.

"We have a terrific race team, and a great program to offer a potential
sponsor partner," Hammonds said. "We don't want to just go out and
qualify, we want to be competitive, win races and challenge for the
Full Throttle championship."

The 42-year-old Hammonds entered his first NHRA Pro Stock contest at
the 1996 Mile-High Nationals while playing professional basketball with
the NBA Nuggets. He continued to compete part-time on the NHRA tour
while still in the NBA.

ENCOURAGING SUCCESS FOR LUCAS

They say you never forget your first NHRA victory, and that's certainly
been the case for Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas. Although
lucas.JPGit's
been a little more than three weeks since Lucas and his GEICO
Powersports/Lucas Oil crew celebrated their big win in Atlanta, the
excitement is still palatable at Morgan Lucas Racing in Indianapolis.

"We're sky-high, no doubt," said Lucas, the youngest nitro racer on
tour at 25 years of age. "For one, we proved to ourselves we can do it,
which is huge. The other thing is the dragster is running so well and
so consistently right now that we truly feel another win is right
around the corner. It's an awesome feeling to have.

"I've had times in the past where I've dreaded going to the next race
but now they can't come soon enough. It seriously wouldn't surprise
anyone on this team if we won this weekend's race in Bristol. That's
how good we're feeling right now."

It was his third final round showing in seven events.

“We would like to seal the deal in Bristol,” said Bernstein.  “We have
performed well in Bristol in the past, and it’s a track where we really

ENCORE SUNDAY: MOUNTAIN MOTOR PRO STOCK, THE EARLY YEARS

8-10-07mmps.jpgTed Jones had an open-door
policy with IHRA founder Larry Carrier, and while he tried to not wear out his
welcome, on a fall day in 1976 he couldn’t resist bringing his idea to the
boss.

Jones was the VP of
Competition for the five-year-old sanctioning body, and little did he know that
his intuition would one day change the way the Pro Stock division would be
contested. The IHRA was always searching for its niche in a drag racing world
dominated by the National Hot Rod Association, and to a point the now-defunct
American Hot Rod Association.

Jones wanted to do away
with the status quo for the Pro Stocks. He was tired of following the NHRA’s
lead of factoring cars into competitiveness, and the aggravation that came
along with policing it. His idea of throwing the standard formula of pounds to
cubic inch out the window had the potential to be taken one of two ways – (A)
the greatest thing since sliced bread or (B) downright blasphemous. The bottom
line is that Jones had to deal with the never-ending issue and not Carrier.

“It was a nightmare
without end because you always had to adjust the rules,” Jones, who now owns a
television production company, said. “You had several weight breaks and they
were for every combination under the sun. You had them for staggered valves,
cylinder heads, wheelbase, and so on and so forth.

“Most every Pro Stocker
had to run a small block because if you didn’t, you’d have to run so much
weight that it was unreasonable and the parts breakage for running such a heavy
combination was unreal. It was a real headache.”

CLASSIC VIDEO REWIND - 1975 ROCKINGHAM

This rare video gem was broadcast on Speedvision and features coverage
of the 1975 IHRA Pro Am Nationals, the traditional spring race hosted
by Rockingham Dragway. Back in the day the IHRA provided an alternative
to the larger NHRA and to be honest, the racing wasn't that bad. You'll
see in this two-part video rewind footage of Don Garlits, Shirl Greer,
Raymond Beadle, Bob Glidden, General Lee Edwards and more. It's just
the perfect video for a holiday weekend.

FORCE HOOD: CONTINUITY WINS

nfc winner3.JPGThe secret to Ashley Force Hood’s success in the last two seasons doesn't revolve around a magic tune-up.

Nor is it an unlimited operating budget. It’s not even the guidance of her 14-time championship winning father.

Force Hood adamantly contends that it’s not rocket science.

It’s the same principle that Tony Schumacher boasted of during his reign of terror in Top Fuel.

For Force Hood the key to her strong running Castrol Funny Car is simply -- continuity.
