MEDLEN: THE NITRO WHISPERER

Tommy Delago knows if the situation with John Medlen joining Ed “The Ace” McCulloch ends up working the way it did when the former joined his team, the NAPA team will be a force to be reckoned with, even more than they were before.

Delago was informed days before the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., that Medlen would not only be joining his team but also hold the position of co-crew chief.

In a sport where tuners can be very territorial, Delago wasn’t intimidated by the credentials the new DSR tuner brought to the mix.

PMRA AND QUICK 32 SERIES TO RACE AHRA'S CAYUGA EVENT

clip_image002_315One of the biggest and greatest drag racing events in Canada is now only days away, and the Pro Modified Racing Association and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series will be a major part of it.
 
In conjunction with the American Hot Rod Association, the Canadian Nitro Nationals will take place on the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario July 1-4, 2010.
 
Round two of the 2010 PMRA Series will be held on the country’s oldest operating drag strip, with four qualifiers for the Pro Modifieds before the top eight cars do battle in the eliminations.

NORWALK: KING OF THE CALORIES

If you haven't stood in line for at least an hour waiting your turn to purchase a pound of ice cream, then you haven't truly enjoyed the “Norwalk Experience”.

Headed into its fourth year on the NHRA circuit, Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park (SREMP) located a few miles east of Norwalk, Ohio, has quickly become a “must do” destination for the drag racing fan. This past weekend the fans turned out to see hot action on the racetrack and to enjoy the carnival atmosphere surrounding nitro alley. And, no stop would be complete without the ice cream.

SPOKANE COUNTY RACEWAY TO HOST NHRA LODRS EVENT

NHRA officials have annopunced the addition of Spokane County Raceway to the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.  The Div6_Northwest-4cNorthwest Thunderfest event, scheduled for July 29-August 1, will be the third in the series taking the total number of events to six in the division and 40 in the series.

NORWALK IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN FOR ARANA

Summit Motorsports Park will always be a magical place for defending NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Hector Arana. After all, the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Nationals is the first place where Arana guided the Lucas Oil Buell to the victory circle.

"It's special to me in my heart," Arana said. "It's a good location. It's a beautiful track. The fans over there are awesome. Combine that with it being where I got my first win and it's an unbeatable place for me."

Arana said the atmosphere surrounding the event is always one he and his Lucas Oil camp enjoys very much.

DRIVERS WEIGH IN ON K&N HP CHALLENGE

KN-HorsePowerChallenge_4cAt this weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, eight of the NHRA’s best Pro Stock racers will take part in the 26th annual K&N Horsepower Challenge, a special event pairing seven drivers who accumulated the most qualifying points over the last year as well as one final participant selected by the fans in a three-round, high dollar shootout with the winner taking home $50,000.  

This year’s field includes four former winners accounting for nine of the wins in the Challenge’s 25-year history as well as the current and four former Full Throttle Pro Stock champions.  Once qualifying was completed at the last event in Bristol, TN, the elite eight took time to answer some questions about Pro Stock’s all-star race:

MCCULLOCH - I RESPECT DON'S DECISION

For everything NHRA drag racing is, it also is a business.

That was apparent Monday when Don Schumacher removed Ed “Ace” McCulloch as the crew chief of the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Funny Car driven by Ron Capps replacing him with veteran tuner John Medlen.

McCulloch, a longtime crew chief, had served as the leader of the on the NAPA Funny Car since 2005. McCulloch will remain at DSR and assist Medlen and the NAPA team, as well as help the crew chiefs on the two other DSR Funny Cars driven by Matt Hagan and Jack Beckman.

JOURNALIST CHRIS MARTIN PASSES AWAY

Veteran drag racing journalist Chris Martin, 63, passed away early this morning following a lengthy illness.

NHRA PLANS TO TEST RESTRICTOR PLATE, SMALL ENGINE IN NORWALK

The NHRA’s next round of nitro data gathering is scheduled for the Monday following the Summit Racing Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. The plan is to use the nitro Funny Cars of John Force Racing and the Top Fuel dragster driven by Antron Brown.

Brown’s dragster will continue to test the restrictor plate concept, this time dropping the size of the opening by an additional 2 inches; down to about 19 square inches.

WCPMA RACING WITH IHRA IN EDMONTON

In addition to a huge assortment of nitro machines, bikes, funny cars and exhibitions at this weekend’s River Cree Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals, one of Nitro Jam’s oldest and most prestigious classes will return to competition for the first time in 2010 as the stars of the West Coast Pro Modified Association give quarter-mile doorslammer fans something extra to look forward to at Castrol Raceway.

Formed one year after the IHRA invented the class in 1990, the West Coast Pro Modified Association is one of the oldest Pro Mod groups in the nation. It features the quickest Pro Modified doorslammers in the Western half of North America and has a very strong following in Canada.
