EMOTIONAL ETOWN MOMENT

Drag racing is an emotional sport and Friday during qualifying at the NHRA SuperNationals, a single nitro run arend.JPGtesting the limits of those emotions.

Jeff Arend, who succeeded Scott Kalitta as driver of the DHL Toyota
Funny Car, opened Friday’s nitro session with a single run in honor of
the driver who lost his life at Englishtown last year.

Arend ran after a video tribute to Kalitta played on the ACDelco Vision big screen.

FRIDAY ETOWN QUALIFYING

tony_schumacher.jpgTony
Schumacher raced to the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the 40th annual
United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway
Park in Englishtown, N.J.

Ashley Force Hood, Allen Johnson and Craig Treble also took the
provisional top spots in their respective categories at the 11th of 24
events on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Schumacher, the defending event winner, drove his U.S. Army dragster to
a 3.818-second pass at 314.46 mph to become the provisional top
qualifier in Top Fuel. If it stands it would be Schumacher’s first No.
1 qualifier of the season, 57th of his career and second at Old Bridge
Township Raceway Park.

BAKER LEADS ETOWN PRO MODS

The early morning rain and fog forced NHRA officials to limit the Get
Screened America Pro Mod Challenge's qualifying attempts to a baker.jpglone
round, but when the sun burned off the clouds and the Pro Mods hit the
track at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, they were steaming hot.
After 16 of the best cars in the world had run, the top nine posted a
6.09 or better with the top four in the five-second zone and Joe
Baker's Matco Tools/Lend America '68 Camaro on the provisional pole
with a sizzling 5.946/242.63.

'Tombstone' Tommy Gray came out of the gate first pair with a
rocket-fast pass of 5.988/240.59 in his Undertaker '68 Camaro, and the
crew chiefs in the lanes started salivating, knowing what the track
would hold. Gray ended up in the No. 3 spot, being bumped back by
Topeka runner-up Jay Payne at 5.97/240.04.

FORD TO BUILD 2010 MUSTANG COBRA JET

The 40th Anniversary 2008 Mustang Cobra Jet more than lived up to its
billing, joining its historic predecessor - the original 1968 BOSS_351_008_low_res.jpgCobra
Jet in winning its inaugural race at the NHRA Winternationals in
Pomona, Calif.  Now Ford Racing is ready to update the latest Cobra
Jet, and is announcing plans to build a 2010 version of the “CJ.” The

CHAMPION SPEED SHOP PREPARES FOR BOWLING GREEN

Tjim_mclennan.jpghe
Champion Speed Shop is fine-tuning the Chevrolet-powered Special in
preparation to motor far further south than South San Francisco for the
NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green Kentucky, June 19-21. Putting
together an all-new race car and getting the fresh clutch and tire
combination to mesh with almost three thousand horsepower can be a
little tricky - especially when races last a mere 5.96 seconds each.

NESBITT GOES FOR ANOTHER ‘DOUBLE’ IN ROCKINGHAM PRO AM EVENT

Winning two separate titles at one event, as Brett Nesbitt did in last
April’s IHRA Spring Nationals, is a remarkable feat.  Doing it twice Brett_Nesmith.jpgin six months at the same track is the stuff of legend.

Nesbitt has a chance to do just that this on June 19-21 when, after one
false start, the IHRA Summit Pro Am Series returns to Rockingham
Dragway with eight championships up for grabs including Top Sportsman,
Top Dragster and Top Stock.

The McLeansville resident, who, with dad Jeff operates Nesbitt Racing
Engines, Inc., will be bidding for his third straight Rockingham Pro Am
title in Quick Rod; his first in Top Dragster.  Those are the two
categories in which he doubled-up at the Spring Nationals.

FORCE HOOD'S FINAL ROUND OBSTACLE

If she had found a way to beat Tony Pedregon a little more often,
Ashley Force Hood most certainly would be the Funny Car points nfc winner2.JPGleader entering this week's 40th annual United Association SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

As it is, the 26-year-old daughter of drag racing icon John Force, for
whom Pedregon once drove and for whom he won the championship in the
Castrol SYNTEC Ford, rolls into Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in
third place in NHRA Full Throttle points, two behind Pedregon and just
60 back of pacesetting Ron Capps.

It's a lofty position for the former high school cheerleader who this
week is competing in just her 55th event in a Castrol GTX Ford Mustang
that, week-in and week-out, has been the performance leader among the
vehicles in the John Force Racing motor pool.

important, hands on experience for every Ford driver and team owner
