MONDAY - BECKMAN, LUCAS, ENDERS AND SAVOIE PICK UP VICTORIES AT U.S. NATIONALS

Jack Beckman completed a sweep of the weekend in Funny Car with his victory on Labor Day Monday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.

Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the world’s most prestigious drag race and the final NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event of the regular season.

Beckman defeated three-time Indianapolis winner Robert Hight in the final with a reaction time advantage victory. Beckman ran his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to a 4.058-second pass at 310.77 mph while Hight ran a quicker 4.045 at 309.77 in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro SS. Despite running the slower time, Beckman had a superior 0.034 reaction time advantage to Hight’s 0.034 which helped him take the victory. It was his sixth win of the season, 21st of his career and first at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

In addition to earning a coveted first victory at the tradition-rich event, Beckman also won the $100,000 Traxxas Nitro Shootout all-star race on Sunday and was the event’s No. 1 qualifier. Beckman outran Bob Bode, Ron Capps and Del Worsham to advance to the final.

“It’s hard to enjoy what just happened because you are worn out,” said Beckman, who enters the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s six-race playoffs, as the No. 1 seed. “Yesterday after the Traxxas Shootout I was thrashed. It was a hot day that ended up wonderful. Getting through today was the key. I think surviving this is an effort unto itself. I’ve got to let that trophy sit on the office shelf and stare at it for a while to realize that we actually did it.”

Hight, a three-time Indy winner who was making his sixth U.S. Nationals final round appearance, was the runner-up in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout. Hight, who made his third final of the season and second-in-a-row, will take some momentum into the playoffs as the No. 7 seed.

Alexis DeJoria clinched the 10th and final Funny Car spot in the Countdown when Courtney Force fell to Tommy Johnson Jr. in the second round. Force defeated DeJoria in round one, but had to reach the final to overtake the defending Indianapolis winner for the final Countdown position.

Lucas picked up his first U.S. Nationals victory with a final round performance of 3.864 at 319.90 in his Lucas Oil dragster to defeat Dave Connolly. The win was Lucas’ first of the season and 12th of his career. He defeated Leah Pritchett, teammate Richie Crampton and Brittany Force to reach the final. It is the second straight U.S. Nationals victory for Morgan Lucas Racing after Crampton’s win last season.

“Winning this race is absolutely massive,” said Lucas, who stepped out of a full-time ride after the 2013 season to focus on the family business, Lucas Oil. “It’s the biggest race win I’ve ever had. I want to live in this moment for a long time because you never know when it will happen again.”

Connolly was racing in his second Top Fuel final after moving to the category this season after a successful career in Pro Stock. Despite the loss, the driver of the C&J Energy Services dragster was able to claim the final Countdown spot with his runner-up finish.

Defending and eight-time world champ Tony Schumacher will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

In Pro Stock, Enders claimed her first career Indianapolis victory and sixth win of the season in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro, defeating teammate Drew Skillman in the final on a holeshot with a 6.611 at 209.75 to Skillman’s quicker, but losing 6.606 at 209.98. Enders now has 18 career victories, which ties her for second on the all-time wins list by women in Mello Yello Series competition with the legendary Shirley Muldowney.

Enders used holeshot starts to win three of her four rounds during the day and she sped past V Gaines, Larry Morgan and Greg Anderson in the first three rounds.

“This is something I’ve dreamt about and worked for my entire life,” said Enders, who will enter the Countdown as the No. 1 seed for the first time. “I made my first pass at this track in a junior dragster when I was nine in 1994. I’ve had lots of really great memories here. It makes it worth it to be able to do it with the right people.”

Rookie driver Skillman was seeking his first win in Pro Stock after two previous runner-up finishes. Despite the loss, Skillman and his Ray Skillman Racing Chevy Camaro will be ready for the Countdown, where they are the No. 8 seed.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Savoie took home his second victory of the season with a 7.011 at 193.02 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki, beating No. 1 qualifier Chip Ellis who fouled out at the start on his PiranaZ/Pippin Motorsports Buell. The win was Savoie’s third career victory and his first at Indianapolis. He was the runner-up here in 2011 and 2014. He defeated Chaz Kennedy, Steve Johnson and Hector Arana Jr. to advance to the final.

“It’s a great day,” said Savoie, who will enter the Countdown as the No. 4 seed. “The last round was not the way we wanted to win but we held our composure. We had a good day and we’ve been blessed.”

Ellis was the No. 1 qualifier and was looking for his first win of the season. Despite the loss, Ellis was able to move around LE Tonglet and earn a Countdown spot.

Scotty Pollacheck secured the final Countdown spot when three-time world champ Angelle Sampey lost in the semifinals.

This is the second straight year that all four winners were first-time victors of the U.S. Nationals.

The Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s six-race playoffs, will begin in two weeks with the NHRA Carolina Nationals, Sept. 18-20, at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C. The championship is open to the top 10 in each professional category following the U.S. Nationals.

SUNDAY - BECKMAN PICKS UP WIN IN TRAXXAS NITRO SHOOTOUT; DIXON, BECKMAN, ANDERSON AND ELLIS CLAIM NO. 1 QUALIFIERS

Jack Beckman earned a $100,000 payday with his victory in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Funny Car Sunday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.

Beckman, the 2012 world champ, claimed the victory with a winning performance of 4.051 seconds at 309.06 mph, defeating Robert Hight in the final of the all-star bonus event. It was Beckman’s second win in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, making him the second Funny Car driver to win the event twice, tying John Force.

“I think we have shown everyone how good we are when conditions are favorable,” said Beckman, who also won a Funny Car all-star race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in 2007. “We’ve been spectacular in hot conditions too but we haven’t had that many runs in it over the last month and a half. I think we just reinforced that this Infinite Hero team has it no matter how hot the track is.”

Hight, who was also the runner-up in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout last season, ran a 4.138 at 303.71 in the Auto Club Chevy Camaro SS. He defeated Matt Hagan and Tim Wilkerson to reach the final.

Beckman also earned the No. 1 qualifying position for Monday’s 11 a.m. eliminations with his Friday night pass, a track-record performance of 3.936 at 323.74 in the Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T. He earned his fifth No. 1 of the season, fourth-in-a-row and 15th of his career. Beckman will battle Bob Bode in the first round.

Hight qualified second with a 3.971 at 322.96, earning him a first round matchup with John Bojec. Tommy Johnson Jr. starts third with a 3.976 at 318.32 in the Riley Children’s Hospital Dodge Charger R/T. He will face John Hale.

A critical matchup that will be pivotal in deciding the final playoff spot in the Countdown to the Championship will take place in the first round of Funny Car eliminations featuring Alexis DeJoria and Courtney Force. If Force defeats DeJoria in round one, she would need to reach the final to clinch the final playoff position.

Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also claimed No. 1 qualifying positions at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis during the final event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season.

Dixon was the top qualifier in Top Fuel on Saturday with a 3.744 at 326.00 in his C&J Energy Services dragster and that run held to give him the No. 1 seed. A three-time world champ, Dixon earned his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and 53rd of his career. The four-time winner of the world’s most prestigious drag race will race Doug Kalitta in the first round.

“It’s been a great start to the weekend,” said Dixon. “We had a little trouble getting down the track today but I’d rather have those runs today and that information going into tomorrow. I don’t care where I’ve qualified this year, I haven’t had an easy draw.”

Billy Torrence qualified second in the Capco Contractors dragster with a 3.771 at 323.58. He will face TJ Zizzo in the first round. Steve Torrence, driver of the Capco Contractors dragster, will start third with a 3.778 at 326.08 and race defending event winner Richie Crampton.

In Pro Stock, Anderson used his run from Saturday’s sessions to secure the No. 1 qualifier with a 6.562 at 210.70 in the Summit Racing Chevy Camaro. Anderson, a four-time world champ and six-time Indy winner, earned his second No. 1 of the season and 77th of his career. He faces Aaron Stanfield in the first round.

“The table is set and I’ve got a great racecar,” said Anderson. “There are a whole bunch of other great cars. We’ve got a hot racetrack and I like that. I think my car has been the best on those. My little red Camaro seems to shine on the hot tracks.”

Jonathan Gray qualified second with a 6.562 at 210.70 in the Gray Manufacturing Chevy Camaro. He will face Vincent Nobile in the first round. Drew Skillman, driver of the Ray Skillman Racing Chevy Camaro, will begin as the No. 3 seed and face Alex Laughlin. Defending world champ Erica Enders, who is trying to hold off Anderson for the No. 1 seed in the Countdown, qualified fourth and opens eliminations with V Gaines.

Ellis bested his top run from Saturday with a 6.855 at 195.73 on the Junior Pippin Trucking Buell to claim the No. 1 starting position in Pro Stock Motorcycle. He claimed his third top qualifier of the season and 16th of his career. He opens eliminations against Angie Smith.

“We know we have the horsepower and today was a good tune-up,” said Ellis of Sunday’s warmer conditions. “These will be the conditions we race in. We know where we should be first round tomorrow.”

Andrew Hines qualified second on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.879 at 193.29. He will race Scotty Pollacheck in the first round. Jerry Savoie, rider of the Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki, is the No. 3 seed and will face Chaz Kennedy. LE Tonglet, who is attempting to hold off Ellis and Angelle Sampey for the 10th and final playoff transfer spot, qualified eighth, earning a first round matchup with Eddie Krawiec.

alBALOOSHI QUALIFIES NO. 1, TAKES FIRST ROUND VICTORY DURING PRO MOD ACTION SUNDAY

Khalid alBalooshi claimed the No. 1 qualifying position and followed it up with a first round victory Sunday during the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the seventh of 10 events on the Pro Mod schedule. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is presented by JEGS.

alBalooshi pushed his Precision Turbo and Engine ‘69 Camaro to the No. 1 spot with a 5.845 second pass at 239.78 mph to earn his first top qualifier of the season and third of his career.

The 2011 Pro Mod world champion continued his weekend success with a first round win against Don Walsh Jr. and will race Troy Coughlin Jr. in the quarterfinals on Monday. alBalooshi is chasing his first win since 2011.

Sidnei Frigo, a Pro Mod newcomer, had a successful qualifying attempt to earn the No. 2 starting spot, but fell to Jim Whiteley in the first round. Whiteley will go up against Mike Janis in the quarterfinals. Janis, who won the most recent Pro Mod event in Norwalk in July, took the points lead from Gainesville winner Bob Rahaim after racing to victory over Troy Coughlin. Rahaim failed to qualify for Indianapolis.

“It’s great to get the points lead at Indy, but it just adds to the pressure,” said Janis. “I would rather come from behind at the end and get it, but it’s all right. We’ll take it round by round. It’s really tough competition out here, tougher than I think it’s been all year. Everyone is right on their game. It’s a hot race track but everyone’s going down, so it’s going to be a tough deal.”

Steve Matusek and Rick Snavely will also meet in the second round of eliminations.

Atlanta winner Kenny Lang and Englishtown winner Billy Glidden also failed to qualify.

Pro Mod Series eliminations will continue at approximately 1 p.m. on Monday.

First round results from the 61st annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway Park at Indianapolis, the seventh of 10 events in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series.

SATURDAY - BROWN CLAIMS TRAXXAS NITRO SHOOTOUT WIN: DIXON, BECKMAN, ANDERSON AND ELLIS TAKE QUALIFYING LEADS AT INDY

Antron Brown raced to victory in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout on Saturday , earning a $100,000 payday during an action packed Saturday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.

Brown, the 2012 Top Fuel world champ, took the victory at the Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis despite having to pedal his Matco Tools dragster down track, running a 4.147-second pass at 220.62 mph to defeat Doug Kalitta in the final of the all-star bonus event. It was Brown’s first win in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, having defeated J.R. Todd and Richie Crampton to reach the final.

“The main thing is we were able to sneak away with that win,” said Brown, who also won the Pro Stock Motorcycle all-star race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in 2000. “When you race a Kalitta car in the final for $100,000, they’ll throw a big run on you. We both didn’t make it down cause we were pressing hard and we knew what was at stake.”

Kalitta, appearing in his first Traxxas Nitro Shootout final, ran a 6.588 at 86.46 after his DeWalt Tools dragster quit shortly after the hit of the throttle. He defeated Shawn Langdon and fan vote lottery winner Clay Millican en route to the final.

In other racing, Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Motorcycle) raced to qualifying leads at the final event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season.

Dixon was the top qualifier on Saturday in Top Fuel with a 3.744 at 326.00 in his C&J Energy Services dragster. A three-time world champ, Dixon is searching for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and 53rd of his career with two sessions remaining. Dixon is a four-time winner of the world’s most prestigious drag race.

“Other than trying to win the event, points wise we’d like to try to get back into third place,” said Dixon on his goals for this weekend. “We got bumped down last week. It’s worth those points at the end of the year. I’ve lost a championship by two points and you never want to leave any on the table.”

Billy Torrence is second with a 3.771 at 323.58 in his Capco Contractors dragster. Denver winner and Billy’s son, Steve Torrence, sits third with a 3.778 at 326.08, also in a Capco Contractors dragster.

In Funny Car, Beckman continued his hot streak with a 3.936 at 323.74, both track records, claiming the qualifying lead in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T. Beckman has had an incredible last few races, resetting the national record multiple times and winning two of the three races during the NHRA Western Swing. Beckman, the 2012 world champ, is gunning for his fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season, and fourth in a row.

“We went a 3.91 in testing (here) last week in way better conditions,” Beckman said. “The delays helped bring the track back into that zone where we could run a mid-three. We had that data with the 3.94 from Sonoma and it went within six thousandths on that run. When the car becomes that predictable, it becomes a tough combination to beat.”

Brainerd winner Robert Hight drove his Auto Club Chevy Camaro SS to a 3.971 at 322.96, good enough for the provisional No. 2 spot. Tommy Johnson Jr., one of the most consistent Funny Cars the last few months, sits third with a 3.976 at 318.32 in the Riley Children’s Hospital Dodge Charger R/T.

Anderson claimed the provisional No. 1 in Pro Stock with a 6.562 at 210.70 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, achieving the feat during the final pass of the second session. Anderson, a four-time world champ and six-time Indy winner, is going for his second No. 1 starting spot of the season and 77th of his career.

“I’m very happy with the car and the performance so far,” said Anderson, who is looking for his third No. 1 qualifier at Indianapolis. “It’s sad we lost last night’s run but today was great. I was second after the first run and first after the second. We’re going in the right direction and that’s why I love Indy.”

Jonathan Gray sits second with a 6.567 at 210.05 in the Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro. Local favorite Drew Skillman, a leading contender for the Auto Club Road to the Future Award, is third after posting a 6.570 at 210.05 in the Ray Skillman Racing Chevy Camaro.

Ellis ran a 6.862 at 193.63 on the Junior Pippin Trucking Buell to claim the qualifying lead in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Ellis is looking for his third No. 1 qualifier of the season and 16th of his career.

“We’ve been trying to get the clutch straightened out,” said Ellis, whose last victory came in 2008. “We came here and tested last Wednesday. I think we are starting to get a handle on it. I had all the faith and confidence in my engine builder and team that we can get this job done.”

Andrew Hines is second on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.879 at 193.29. Louisiana alligator farmer Jerry Savoie is third with a 6.896 at 194.35 on the Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki.

Veteran rider Joe DeSantis went for a wild ride when his Suzuki went out of control and crashed near the finish line during his first qualifying attempt of the weekend. He was checked and released by NHRA Emergency Services Officials on the scene.

Qualifying for the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals wraps up Sunday with sessions at 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. The Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Funny Car will feature rounds at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Monday’s eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m.

FRIDAY - PERSISTENT STORMS FORCE CANCELLATION OF PRO QUALIFYING

Persistent rain showers forced NHRA officials to cancel Friday’s professional qualifying session at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. Rain started just as qualifying for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series began and continued into the night. Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Redell Harris was the only bike to make it down Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis before the rain hit, leaving him as the qualifying leader with a 7.224-second pass at 181.23 mph on a Buell.

Racing is scheduled to begin on Saturday with sportsman qualifying and time trials at 8 a.m. Two NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series qualifying sessions are scheduled for at 2:45 and 6:15 p.m. The Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Top Fuel will also take place on with rounds at 4, 5:15 and 7:40 p.m.

DEFENDING WORLD CHAMP SMITH RACES TO PRO MOD SERIES QUALIFYING LEAD

Defending NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series world champion Rickie Smith raced to the qualifying lead Friday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the seventh of 10 events on the Pro Mod schedule. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is presented by JEGS.

Smith powered his late model IDG nitrous-injected Camaro to a leading performance of 5.901 seconds at 246.48 mph. Smith, who won his first race of the year at Bristol Dragway in June, is looking for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and sixth of his career.

“Luckily, we ran a little better down the back half,” Smith said. “It was a little tricky out there; you didn’t know what to do. The clouds had come in, the air was starting to blow and the track was starting to cool down. I didn’t think I had enough clutch, but I ended up having too much clutch. Luckily we made a pretty good call and made a good run.”

Former Pro Mod world champion Khalid alBalooshi was second in his Precision Turbo and Engine 1969 Camaro with a 5.908 at 245.09 and Steve Whiteley was third in his Cadillac CTS-V with a 5.920 at 245.76.

Series points leader and Gainesville winner Bob Rahaim was 10th after the first session with a 6.005 at 243.90 while second place points sitter Troy Coughlin qualified fifth in his Corvette.

Two rounds of Pro Mod qualifying will be held Saturday at 2 and 5:30 p.m. The fourth and final round of qualifying will be held on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. before the first round of eliminations at 2 p.m.
