LEE SHEPHERD VIDEO TRIBUTE

RELATED ARTICLE - THE LEGEND OF LEE SHEPHERD

Before there were Chevrolet Pro Stock standouts such as Jeg Coughlin
Jr. and Dave Connolly, there was Lee Shepherd. The former NHRA Modified
eliminator standout was the bridge that brought Chevrolet back to the
forefront of Pro Stock. He followed in the path started in the 1970s by
the legendary Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and with the guidance of the
legendary Reher & Morrison duo, he scored the first Chevrolet NHRA
Pro Stock world championship in five years when he claimed the 1981
crown.

Shepherd won four consecutive NHRA Pro Stock crowns as well as two IHRA titles simultaneously.

An accident claimed the life of Shepherd in 1985.

1979 - NHRA WORLD FINALS - FINAL ROUNDS

The final installment of the three-part 1979 NHRA World Finals features
the finals of the three professional divisions. Top Fuel features the
final round fo Don Garlits versus Rob Bruins while Gordie Bonin goes

1979 - NHRA WORLD FINALS SEMI-FINALS

This is the continuation of the 1979 NHRA World Finals with the
semi-finals. At this point, it's evident the Ontario Motor Speedway
racing surface has become a one-lane race track with the left lane
being the lane of choice. Some real names remain in competition such as
Don Garlits, Rob Bruins, Gordie Bonin, John Force and Trip Shumake.
Garlits is clearly in control.

Can you name the dejected John Force crew member?

1973 - POMONA DRAG RACING SAMPLING

This classic video clip features a healthy sampling of nitro racing
filmed in Pomona, Ca. The videographer sneaks in a clip of Dick Landy's
Pro Stocker as well some sportsman action. The one piece of film which
leaves us scartching our head is about 1:20 into the clip, a
young man runs out following a Top Fuel burnout which bears a striking
resemblance to a young Larry Dixon Jr.

1974 - TOMMY IVO POMONA CRASH

Tommy Ivo had the misfortune of crashing his new rear-engine dragster
during his fourth run on the brand new dragster 45995-150-0.jpgduring the 1974 NHRA
Winternationals in Pomona, Ca. This classic YouTube.com video captures
a combination of classic home movie and tremendous photography. He was
uninjured in the accident.

Ivo said it best in an article published in Hemmings Motor News.

"It was a brand-spankin' new car on my fourth run in the 1974
Winternationals. The engine exploded so fiercely that it turned into a
fireball and punched a hole in the wing. I was running 240 (mph) upside
down, backwards--I hit the guardrail, and the car came apart like a
two-dollar watch. It was worth the price of admission. I thought it was
curtains, and when I felt that, I became euphoric--the scare went away.
I was mad at myself because I'd closed my eyes and missed the show."

1983 - NHRA U.S. NATIONALS

Classic Indy footage always rocks and certainly this Diamond P-produced
race coverage doesn't dissappoint. This was the final Indy for Shirley
Muldowney before he devastating crash in 1984 during the NHRA
Grandnational in Montreal. Much of the first part focuses on her
dangerous brush with the guardrail. Also included on the video are
classic drivers such as Mark Oswald, John Force and Lee Shepherd.

1981 - NHRA WORLD FINALS

This class video clip features coverage of the 1981 NHRA World Finals
at Orange County International Raceway. Originally broadcast on NBC's
Sportsworld, the announcing crew consists of the late Steve Evans and
current NHRA microphone man Paul Page. This two-part video features the
Top Fuel division only and the hard-fought championship battle between
Jeb Allen and Gary Beck.

1959 - NHRA U.S. NATIONALS

Detroit Dragway was a legend of another era.

When the strip closed in the 1990s, the facility ended a rich history
of drag racing that dated back to the 1950s when a fledgling sport was
just beginning to spread throughout the country.

The facility hosted national events but none like the premiere drag racing in the world.

Detroit Dragway hosted the NHRA U.S. Nationals in 1959 and 1960.

While that may prove quite the trump card in some circles, nothing will
ever invoke the Detroit Dragway legend like its famous radio
commercials did.

Simply put, the catchphrase became the tradition for drag racing advertising.

“Sunday Sunday Sunday at Detroit Dragway” began at Detroit Dragway and quickly spread throughout the drag racing world.

That fever was no doubt inspired by the YouTube Video we found of the 1959 NHRA U.S. Nationals at Detroit Dragway.

This video clip, we understand, came from a documentary titled "Ingenuity in Action".
