SATURDAY - WESTCOTT TAKES MOPAR HEMI CHALLENGE

Defending series champion Charlie Westcott Jr. continued his near total domination of the Mopar Performance Hemi Challenge Series with another victory at the fourth annual NHRA JEGS.com Cajun SPORTSnationals being held this weekend at No Problem Raceway Park.

Westcott, of Parma, Mich., drove his Warfish Barracuda to a string of 8.6-second runs to reach the final round where he made the quickest run of the weekend with an 8.59 to take the win. Westcott was scheduled to face Jim Daniels and his Ray Barton Racing Dodge Dart, but Daniels, who was competing in his first Hemi Challenge event, was unable to make the final due to an electrical problem. For the victory, Westcott earned $5,000 from Mopar Performance.

“We came down here with the intention of winning the race so we accomplished our goal,” said Westcott. “That [8.59] run in the final was a pretty good pass but it could have been even quicker. If I had really leaned on it, I could have run an 8.54 or 8.55. I had five customer engines here so that made for a pretty busy weekend, but in the end it was all worth while.”

The Mopar Hemi Challenge was just one of many special events held on Saturday during the Jegs.com Cajun SPORTSNationals. Saturday’s highlights also included the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Shootouts, the King of the Bayou competition, and final qualifying.

Top Sportsman driver Earl Folse, of Raceland, La., jumped to the top spot after qualifying second on Friday. Folse ran 6.585 seconds at 209.92 mph to edge passed Keith Raftery of Lake Charles, La., who made a pass of 6.636 seconds at 209.92 mph.

Michael Manners of Willis, Texas, moved passed Joey Marcotte of Denham Springs, La., to end qualifying in the number one position. Manners ran a pass of 6.177 seconds at 221.05 mph while, Marcotte’s pass of 6.183 seconds at 226.58 mph fell slightly short.

Chase Williams of Carthage, Texas finished qualifying in the number one position in Comp Eliminator with a run of 8.769 seconds to slide passed the number two qualifier Michael Johnson of Springdale, Ark.

In Super Stock, Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala., drove a ’91 Oldsmobile to take the first spot with a time of 10.755 seconds. Dennis qualified just above James Caro of Houma, La., who drove a ‘05 Dodge.

Stock driver Jerry Davis of Santa Fe, Texas, took his ’72 Duster for a pass of 10.887 seconds to qualify above Edmond Richardson of Greenbrier, Tenn.

The top qualifier in the Sportsman Motorcycle category was local racer Randal Guitreau of Prairieville, La., and the number two position went to Peter Pollet of Paulina, La.

In the other specialty races, Bert Prejean of St. Amant, La., won the Top Sportsman Shootout defeating Corey Glidewell of Corinth, Miss. In the Top Dragster Shootout Kurt Damron Jr. of Fruitland Park, Fla., took home the trophy defeating Michael Manners of Willis, Texas. Super Comp racer Thomas Stalba of Williamstown, New Jersey was the Boudreaux Automotive King of the Bayou Champion winning a cash prize of $1,000.

Racing continues Sunday at No Problem Raceway Park at 9:00 a.m. Gates open at 7:00 am. Tickets are $20 and include a pit pass. For more information please contact No Problem Raceway at (985) 369-3692 or log on to www.noproblemraceway.com.

EVENT PREVIEW - JEGS.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals Highlights Sportsman Racing At Its Best

jegscajunsportsnats.jpgNHRA will showcase NHRA Sportsman competitors in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series when No Problem Raceway Park hosts the fourth annual JEGS.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, April 20-22.

The JEGS.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals will feature a guaranteed purse of more than $50,000 and competition in six NHRA Lucas Oil Series categories, including Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Racers will earn points toward their NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series National Championship quest in all categories except Super Street. The event will also include the division’s Top Sportsman and Top Dragster categories as well as a Pro Mod invitational race.

“We are pleased to continue our support the SPORTSnationals events for our Sportsman Racers,” said Len Imbrogno, NHRA’s director of Sportsman racing and member tracks. “It’s a great way to put the drivers in the spotlight who make up the foundation of NHRA. And we’re happy to partner with JEGS High Performance to offer this opportunity to so many of the men and women who make the sport what it is today.”

While the focus of the event will be on competition in the core NHRA Sportsman categories, other special attractions include Super Stock and Stock Class eliminations, the Mopar Hemi Super Stock Challenge, the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Shootout and “King of the Bayou” Shootout for Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.

NHRA reintroduced the SPORTSnationals three years ago at No Problem Raceway Park to rave reviews from racers and spectators. Prior to last season NHRA had hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974-1986 at a trio of tracks, including Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. (1974-‘80; 1985-‘86), the old Houston International Raceway (1981-‘82) and Indianapolis Raceway Park (1983-‘84).

This season NHRA will host three SPORTSnationals events, including the JEGS.com NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals; the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals in Columbus, Ohio in September and the NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals in Fontana, Calif. in October.
