UNDERSTANDING JOHN FORCE

John Force and his daughter, Ashley Force-Hood, held court inside the Force Racing motorcoach Friday afternoon prior to first round 07_29_2009_force.jpgqualifying at Infineon Raceway. A thirty minute media session turned into a 90-minute “monologue” by the master of story telling. To be fair, Ashley Force Hood got one or two words in edgewise, but if John felt the point needed an assist he was quick to step up to the podium. Ask Force a question and halfway into the answer he's telling you another story, which mean eventually he stares and you and says, “What was question?”

So, what can you learn about John Force and family in 90 minutes just by asking a few racing questions?  Plenty.

Friday afternoon prior to first round qualifying at the NHRA Fram Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Ca. A thirty minute media session turned into a 90-minute “monologue” by the master of story telling. To be fair, Ashley Force Hood got one or two words in edgewise, but if John felt the point needed an assist he was quick to step up to the podium. Ask Force a question and halfway into the answer he's telling you another story, which means eventually he stares and you and says, “What was question?”

So, what can you learn about John Force and family in 90 minutes just by asking a few racing questions?  Plenty.

1 - Force will retire from racing when he dies. And, when he does die he has placed his youngest daughter, Courtney, in charge of having him cremated. Force wants his ashes spred over his wife's body when she passes so that he will always be with her. His wife, Laurie, who wishes to be buried in a casket, doesn't agree with that idea, at all.

2 - Force was angry, in a good way, when Courtney won her first race last week at Seattle. It took John 15 years to get his first win DSC_0390.JPGand Courtney got the job done in just two. Its not about the time it took that raises Force's hackles. It's about the learning experience, the getting knocked down and getting back up, the ride if you will to victory that Force fears his daughter has missed. Ashley reminded her father living with him is quite a ride.

3 - Force has four daughters and not a single son. After years of bemoaning the fact he lacked a son, Force has decided girls are just perfect. Seems that in this day and age it is far easier to market a daughter than it is a son, or son-in-law.

4 - The best thing about driving in a car with John Force for eight hours – is when he gets out of the car, according to his daughter Courtney. Force, it appears, has no problem ripping off a four hour 'monologue' and then wondering why he is the only one talking.

5 - Force carries pictures of his daughters in his briefcase. Photos of his girls when they were little and joined him in Victory Lane. It might be considered amazing, but John Force is an intensely emotional man who isn't ashamed of admitting he cries; a lot according to Ashley.

Civil_Defense_Music.jpg6 - The birth of his daughter Courtney was not an easy experience for his wife. It seems that Courtney nearly died and that following the birth, Laurie was informed she should not have any more children. To ensure there would be no further pregnancies and no sons, Force got “snipped”.  That little story was a shocker to Ashley. Sometimes children just don't need to know about these moments in life.

7 - Force's first child, Adria, has started a record label – Civil Defense – with the intention of helping struggling artists to get their music published. Adria spends her days as the CFO of John Force Racing and several other family businesses. When Adria is not in the office she pursues her passion writing, producing and performing music with her band M-O-S Project, an award nominated Orange County band that she helped form in 2005. Over the years Adria has seen a decline in opportunities for talented musicians and singers to get their music to a wide audience for a variety of reasons. Two years ago she began talking with her band mates and people in the music industry about this problem. From those conversations the Civil Defense Music record label was born.

“We are working with key veterans of the music industry in hopes of reviving great music. What you are hearing out there today is good but it all seems to be the same, entertainment verses art. The position with Civil Defense Music is to do what it takes to get these talented bands and singers where they should be, by promoting their music and getting it out there because it deserves to be heard” said Hight.

8 - And, finally, you learn that Force completely and totally screwed up the father/daughter dance at Ashley's wedding. He talked through the entire dance, never once hearing the song that had been pick out by Ashley specially for the occasion. The song – Ready, Set, Don't Go by Hannah Montana. In a possible move to make up for the trangression, John now keeps the Hannah Montana CD in his vehicle and plays the song over and over and over and over and over and you get the picture.
