A GEAR-JAMMING COMEBACK?

Torco's CompetitionPlus.com has learned that a group is working to develop a new style of drag racing which will cater to those diehard fans of the old Modified class. A source has told us this style of racing will be created with the intention of being adopted by local tracks throughout the country to run on a once-a-month basis.

Here's the format from what we hear:

6.50 eighth-mile index.

Heads-up on full-tree

Pre-1982 body styles

No electronics or two-steps. Line lock only.

Stick-shift only (clutch assist transmissions legal for Super Stock)

Engine must match manufacturer, or corporate group.

No pounds-per-cubic inch factoring

No power-adders

Cars must meet safety specs of NHRA and IHRA.

So intent on preserving the old-school format we're hearing they may run the race without pre-stage bulbs in the tree.

We're also hearing a major kick-off race is being planned for July 4, 2009 at a yet-undisclosed location with a winning purse as high as $10,000 to win, and $5,000 runner-up.

We'll have more once we learn more.
