CARQUEST NHRA WINTERNATIONALS - SAME DAY COVERAGE

pomona_logo.gif

Every February since
1961, fans have flocked to Southern California not just for the un-winterlike
weather, but also for one of drag racing’s grandest traditions: the unveiling of
new cars, drivers, teams, and sponsorships at the NHRA POWERade season opener.
The Big Go West plays out at the fabled facility known for its outstanding
traction, smooth surface, and potential for record performances. Teams hope to
use the opener as a springboard in their pursuit of a spot in the Countdown to 8
championship program that ends in August.

SATURDAY'S EDITION

DOUBLE A DALE RETURNS!  - Okay, you read the news item that Jerry Tolliver’s
crew chief for his new Rockstar-backed Funny Car will be Dale Armstrong, but
have you really considered its meaning?  Armstrong is one of the most talented
tuner/innovators in the sport’s history.  The winner of the first dual Ollie
Award ever presented in the history of the All-Star Drag Racing Team (an honor
shared with his then driver, Kenny Bernstein), Armstrong’s contributions include
now-taken-for-granted things like onboard computers, sophisticated fuel delivery
systems and much, much more.  Apparently refreshed from his recent years spent
restoring Muscle Cars and the like, if Armstrong returns with the same desire
he’s previously demonstrated, he’s capable of making Tolliver not only a winner,
but a champion.  And his tuning “junior partner” isn’t exactly shabby either.
That job will be handled by part-time Funny Car and Fuel Altered competitor Jeff
Diehl.  This is likely to be one heck of a competitive team, and in short
order.

GOODGUYS CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED

Goodguys Close Out VRA Racing Season
on a High Note at Famoso Raceway

image001.jpgAuto Club Famoso
Raceway, Bakersfield, CA - An abbreviated 2006
Goodguys/VRA Nostalgia Drag Racing Series came to a picture perfect end today at
Auto Club Famoso Raceway, just north of Bakersfield as all 14 class finals were run at
sunset. It was almost as if Mother Nature was in sync with the drag racing gods
– timing the whole thing just right.

The Nostalgia Top Fuel race outcome and the championship
points battle hung in the balance of the final which featured 2005 Goodguys
champion Rick White against 25 year old hard charger Sean Bellemeur. At stake in
the final for Bellemeur was his first-ever Goodguys Top Fuel event win and his
first-ever Goodguys Top Fuel Championship. His bid fell short just after he left
the line as his Plaza Hotel & Casino entry went up in smoke. White, who had
struggled all season, found the winning combination here at the ‘Finals streaked
away to win the event in 5.873 seconds. Utah’s Brett Harris, who had gone out in
today’s second round, won the Goodguys Top Fuel  Championship as his second
round finish here and big win earlier in the season at Pomona gave him the
needed points for his first-ever Goodguys Top Fuel title. Harris also set a new
Goodguys Top Fuel class speed record this weekend at
261.24.
