2013 NHRA - SEATTLE RESULTS
SUNDAY - HAGAN, LUCAS, AND NOBILE EARN VICTORIES AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS
NHRA Funny Car driver Matt Hagan extended his points lead on Sunday and led a trio of first-time Seattle champions, winning for the fourth time in 2013 with a victory against Bob Tasca III at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Pacific Raceways.
Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel) and Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 16th of 24 in the 2013 season.
In the championship round, Hagan, the 2011 Funny Car world champion, powered his 8,000-horsepower Magneti Marelli/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger to a time of 4.171 seconds at 294.75 mph. Tasca, seeking his first win in nearly a year, slowed to a 5.324 at 164.81 in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang.
Hagan, who also picked up his ninth career win, outran Alexis DeJoria, Johnny Gray and Courtney Force, ending her six-round winning streak at the track, to reach the final round.
“The chemistry of this team is something I’ve never had before,” Hagan said. “It shows on the racetrack, and it trickles down from the top, where (crew chief) Dickie (Venables) is a great leader. It’s phenomenal to strap into this Don Schumacher Racing car and know I have the opportunity to win every time I sit in it. I like to get patted on the back as much as anyone, but this is 100 percent hats off to my team.”
The weekend got even better for Hagan as he also clinched the first Funny Car position in the Countdown to the Championship. Cruz Pedregon jumped back into second in the points standings, while Tasca moved into the top 10 with the final round appearance. Hagan, meanwhile, was outstanding on the starting line, winning on a holeshot against Force and posting a strong .036 reaction time in the final round to pick up his first career win in Seattle.
“It’s a huge deal for us to get locked into the Countdown,” Hagan said. “(Ron) Capps didn’t qualify and now we have a whole race worth of points on him. We’re out there to win championships. We can be buddies later, but right now we have one goal: pull on the helmet, get focused, get up on the wheel and turn on four win lights. We just have to dig deep, work hard and make it happen.”
In Top Fuel, Lucas claimed his first victory of the season and eighth of his career, knocking off David Grubnic in the final round. Lucas covered the distance in his 8,000-horespower GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster in 3.908 at 296.57 to knock off Grubnic’s Candlewood Suites dragster, which was making its first final round appearance in 2013 and went 4.253 at 256.31.
Lucas made his second straight final round appearance, finishing the job in Seattle after losing last weekend to points leader Shawn Langdon in Sonoma, Calif.
“We’ve had our struggles, but this is a sign that we’re getting there and turning the corner,” Lucas said. “We’re starting to show some consistency. To win here in front of these fans with an amazing team, it’s probably as cool and as big as any win I’ve had. I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of my team.”
Langdon maintained his points lead in Top Fuel, though Lucas was able to extract revenge in Seattle by beating the Al-Anabi Racing driver in the semifinals on Sunday. Despite a first-round loss, Tony Schumacher moved back into second place. Lucas, who has now made three final round appearances in 2013 and stayed seventh in points, also knocked off Khalid alBalooshi and Doug Kalitta en route to his first victory at Pacific Raceways.
“I’ve always had a special place in my heart for this track,” said Lucas, who went as quick as 3.817 at 318.32 during eliminations. “Hopefully we can maintain this consistency the back half of the season because I really want to make a serious run at a championship.”
Nobile won for the second straight week and picked up his third victory in 2013 by knocking off four-time world champion Jeg Coughlin in a rematch of last weekend’s final round in Sonoma. Nobile’s Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger posted a 6.586 at 210.54 while Coughlin ran a 6.615 at 210.60 in his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger. Nobile also improved to 3-0 in final round appearances against Coughlin this season.
“Luckily we came out on top, just like last weekend,” Nobile said. “I think I try a little bit harder when I’m going up against my teammates in Jeg and Allen, and it definitely means a lot beating Jeg. He’s just unbelievable and to be able to beat a champion, it means a lot to me and my team.”
Mike Edwards, who lost to Coughlin in the semifinals, stayed as the points leader in Pro Stock, while Nobile climbed to fourth in earning his first victory outside of California in 2013. Greg Anderson also clinched a position in the Countdown to the Championship. Nobile, who posted his quickest run of the day in the finals, beat Chris McGaha, Allen Johnson and Anderson to reach the final round.
“I owe it a lot to my team because they’re doing a tremendous job right now,” said Nobile, who clinched his Countdown spot on Saturday during qualifying. “This is definitely a great time to turn it on for the Countdown. I was struggling in the beginning of the year, but I think I figured out what I was doing wrong.”
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues Aug. 15-18 with the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn.
SATURDAY - LANGDON, BECKMAN AND EDWARDS QUALIFY NO. 1 AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS
Coming off his class-best fourth win of the season last weekend, NHRA Top Fuel points leader Shawn Langdon continued his remarkable 2013 campaign by shattering the track E.T. record to earn the No. 1 qualifier position on Saturday at the 26th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.
Jack Beckman (Funny Car) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also will lead their categories as the No. 1 qualifiers at the 16th of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events in 2013. Sunday’s eliminations start at 11 a.m.
Langdon powered his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to a pass of 3.765 seconds at 320.58 mph to earn his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season and 10th of his career. David Grubnic ran an identical 3.765 at 317.57 during the second qualifying session on Saturday, but Langdon stayed in the top spot due to the faster speed.
Langdon, who won in Sonoma, Calif. last weekend and has been the points leader for the past three races, will meet Troy Buff in the opening round of eliminations.
“That 3.76 is basically what we were trying to run out of the box,” said Langdon, who is seeking his first Top Fuel win in Seattle. “It surprised me a little, but I didn’t talk about it with Brian [Husen, crew chief] or Alan [Johnson, tuner] before the run. I saw all these 3.80s and 3.81s in front of us and thought, ‘We’re doing pretty good if it runs 3.79,’ so it was definitely moving.”
After qualifying No. 1 in Sonoma, Grubnic, who remains in the hunt for the 10th position in the Countdown to the Championship, qualified No. 2 in his Candlewood Suites dragster. Four-time Seattle winner Tony Schumacher put his U.S. Army dragster in the third spot with a strong 3.768 at 319.29. Langdon’s Al-Anabi Racing teammate Khalid alBalooshi jumped to fourth with a run of 3.781 at 320.36.
Defending event winner Steve Torrence will face off with Spencer Massey in the opening round. Langdon also scored his first career national event win as a Sportsman driver at Pacific Raceways in 2002.
"I was getting my picture taken over by the winner's circle and just thought it’s crazy that I got my first national event Wally here 11 years ago," Langdon said. "I never would have thought I'd be in the position I'm in right now. I'm very fortunate."
Beckman, the defending Funny Car world champion, also broke the track E.T. record, powering his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger to a 4.049 at 303.64. It is the first No. 1 qualifier of the season for Beckman and the ninth of his career. Beckman, who won in Seattle in 2007, will meet Don Schumacher Racing teammate Johnny Gray in the first round of eliminations. Gray, driver of the Pitch Energy Charger, is currently second in points and has a class-best four wins in 2013.
“This is our first pole since Maple Grove last year, but we’ve been near the top of the pack nearly every race,” said Beckman, who has yet to win in 2013. “We’ve got a lot of ground to make up in the points, but we just want a trophy right now. We want to win a race so bad right now.”
Robert Hight qualified No. 2 in his Auto Club Ford Mustang, going 4.056 at 307.09, and Del Worsham moved to third with a run of 4.065 at 303.84 in his DHL Toyota Camry. Defending event champion Courtney Force qualified No. 8 in her Traxxas Mustang and will meet Alexis DeJoria in the opening round. Sonoma winner Ron Capps, who was second in points coming into this weekend, did not qualify in his NAPA Auto Parts Charger.
“That’s the nature of Funny Car,” Beckman said. “They’re that unpredictable. I think a Funny Car crew chief is the toughest job in all of motorsports. If you look at Funny Car, every team has slumps. It’s just that tough out there. We just have to try to keep winning rounds and hopefully we can put four together (on Sunday).”
In Pro Stock, points leader Edwards made his final qualifying run count, going 6.526 at 212.29, breaking both ends of the track record in his Interstate Batteries/I Am Second Chevy Camaro. It gives Edwards the No. 1 spot for a 12th time in 2013, closing in on the Pro Stock record of 16 No. 1 qualifiers currently held by Edwards (2009) and Greg Anderson (2004), and 53rd time in his career. Edwards, who was part of the final qualifying pair of the last session, will meet Deric Kramer in the first round of eliminations.
“We made a really good run that time,” said Edwards, who has two wins at Pacific Raceways. “I just have to give hats off to my guys. You never know what’s going to happen with two sessions. We were real conservative with the first run. We made some adjustments and made a really nice run. This Camaro is just running great.”
Rickie Jones, who ran 6.532 at 211.49 in his Elite Motorsports Camaro, was bumped to the second spot as a result of Edwards’ track record, narrowly missing his first career No. 1 qualifier. The No. 2 position is still Jones’ best qualifying spot in his Pro Stock career.
Defending world champion Allen Johnson qualified No. 3 in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, running 6.533 at 211.69. Shane Gray, Vincent Nobile and Jason Line also clinched positions in the Countdown to the Championship during qualifying.
“Conditions were good for both runs (on Saturday),” Edwards said. “My guys are doing a tremendous job and hopefully (Sunday) we can have a good, long day.”
