2013 NHRA - DENVER RESULTS
SUNDAY - TWO DRIVERS WIN FROM NO. 1 AS MILE HIGHS DRAW TO A CLOSE
Defending NHRA Pro Stock world champion Allen Johnson continued his incredible run at Bandimere Speedway and raced to his fourth win of the 2013 season Sunday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car) and Shawn Gann (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 14th of 24 in the 2013 season.
In a thrilling final round, both Johnson and Gaines powered their Mopar Dodge Avengers in a repeat of last year’s final in Denver. Johnson’s performance of 6.989 seconds at 196.87 mph took down the Colorado native’s 7.015 at 196.67 in the final round. It marked the second straight Pro Stock victory for Johnson in Denver, fourth in five years and fifth overall for the Greeneville, Tenn. native who also made his seventh straight final round appearance on Thunder Mountain.
“Winning this weekend was very important to me because it was the 25th anniversary of Mopar’s sponsorship of this race,” said Johnson, who was also the No. 1 qualifier. “It’s been a great marriage between Mopar and the Bandimere family, and I can’t think of a better way to acknowledge and honor that relationship than with a win.”
Johnson outran points leader Mike Edwards in the second round and then Rickie Jones in the semifinals to reach the final round against fellow Dodge Avenger campaigner. Johnson and Jeg Coughlin also clinched spots in the Countdown to the Championship, joining Edwards in the class.
“My crew is the reason that we’ve had all of this success for the last seven races here,” said Johnson. “They are just so determined to win it every year. I have to thank them and the man upstairs.”
In Top Fuel, Massey claimed his third victory of the season and 13th of his career, defeating Houston winner Bob Vandergriff in the final round in his 8,000-horsepower Battery Extender/Schumacher Electric dragster. Massey covered the distance in 3.974 at 309.27 to knock off Vandergriff’s C&J Energy Services dragster, which went 4.029 at 304.67.
Massey, who won for the second time in Denver, remains third in the Mello Yello Top Fuel points standings. Massey outran Clay Millican, Mike Strasburg and points leader Shawn Langdon to advance to the final round. Langdon and Tony Schumacher also became the first two racers in the class to qualify for the Countdown to the Championship.
“I was very surprised to see my DSR teammates Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown not running up to their full potential this weekend,” Massey said. “But again, that just shows you just how tough racing on the mountain is, and I'm sure that both teams will be very tough once we return to sea level at Sonoma. The key to winning here today was to tune smart and drive smart, and that’s exactly what we were able to do.
“We didn’t have the power that we wanted during qualifying, but this isn’t a horsepower race. I was surprised that there wasn’t as much tire smoking in eliminations as was expected. The key to winning here today was to tune smart and drive smart, and that’s exactly what we were able to do.”
Pedregon claimed his third victory in 2013 and 33rd for his career by knocking off Tasca in the final round. Pedregon’s 8,000-horsepower Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry posted a 4.233 at 295.46 while Tasca slowed to a 4.408 at 257.04 in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang.
This is the third win of the season for Pedregon in four final round appearances. Pedregon, who was also the No. 1 qualifier and set the track E.T. record (4.073), picked up his 33rd career win. It is also his second win at Denver, winning 20 years after his first victory at Bandimere Speedway (1993). He moves to second in the points standings.
“I got asked what the most gratifying part of the weekend was and I’d have to say that it was breaking our own track record and having low E.T. in three of the four rounds,” Pedregon said. “In the first round we ran a 4.17 but we weren’t trying to. I didn’t care if it ran a 4.30; as long as we did not smoke the tires. We were on a three-race first round slide so this couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Pedregon, who re-set his own track speed record at Bandimere in qualifying, beat Todd Simpson, 2009 Denver winner Ron Capps and 2002 Denver champ Del Worsham to advance to the final round. Pedregon, a two-time world champion, moves to second in points with his second win at Denver, winning 20 years after his first victory at Bandimere Speedway (1993).
“This was a good race to come back and run well, and it takes a little pressure off in Sonoma and Seattle,” Pedregon said.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Gann’s ended a nine-year winless drought with his first final-round appearance since 2010, earning his fifth career victory. Gann went 7.351 at 181.08 on his Pirana Z Racing Buell to knock off points leader Hector Arana Jr. and his final round time of 7.376 at 182.11 on his Lucas Oil Buell. Gann’s last win also came in Denver in 2004.
“It was a long drought, but if you give up the fight you’re never gonna get out of that drought,” Gann said. “This is a big win. My bike has always been fast but I’ve had problems that have plagued me. I’m the heaviest rider out here and I make my own clutches so I have that to deal with. Being up here on the mountain, with fat people like me, you can only move so much mass so hard but we found a way.”
Gann beat Angie Smith, Steve Johnson and three-time world champion Andrew Hines to reach the final round. He moves to the No. 10 spot in the point standings. Arana Jr. became the first rider in the class to clinch a spot in the Countdown for the Championship.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues July 26-28 with the NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway.
SATURDAY - JOHNSON, TORRENCE, C. PEDREGON AND A. ARANA QUALIFY NO. 1 AT BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY
Defending Pro Stock world champion Allen Johnson continued his qualifying success at Bandimere Speedway and raced to his second No. 1 qualifier this season on Saturday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.
Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car) and Adam Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also lead their categories as the No. 1 qualifiers at the 14th of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events in 2013. Sunday’s eliminations start at 11 a.m.
Johnson claimed the top spot in Pro Stock with a performance of 6.949 seconds at 198.23 mph in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, staying dominant on Thunder Mountain. He has been the No. 1 qualifier at Bandimere Speedway the past four years and five times overall and the next step is adding another win to his belt at the legendary facility. On Sunday, Johnson will try for his fifth overall win in Denver and fourth in the past five years.
“I think we have a really good race set up for my car,” Johnson said. “It was great to be the No. 1 qualifier for Mopar’s 75th anniversary last year and do it again this year for the 25th anniversary of the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals sponsorship is just as exciting. It was very important for us to be No. 1 for these two big occasions.
“We’ve got the Mountain pretty well conquered, and now if the driver can just do his job on Sunday, I think we’ll be in pretty good shape. We want to go out there tomorrow and secure that win.”
Colorado native V. Gaines, last year’s runner-up to Johnson, claimed the No. 2 spot with a 6.970 at 197.25 run in his Kendall Oil Dodge Avenger while Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro driver Shane Gray secured the third spot with a 6.971 at 197.13. Points leader Mike Edwards, who had qualified No. 1 in 10 of this year’s first 13 races, ended up in the No. 8 position.
In Top Fuel, Torrence and his Capco Contractors dragster secured his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and third of his career with an impressive performance of 3.880 seconds at 319.60 mph, breaking the track speed record during the final qualifying session. Torrence, who will be seeking his second win of the season, will meet No. 16 qualifier Mike Strasburg in the first round of eliminations.
“We’ve been struggling this season,” Torrence said. “The track came around to us tonight. It made it to the end and I wasn’t expected to run that quick. I’m really happy. Maybe we’re turning that corner and car is going to start doing better. It is pretty cool to have your name on the top of the list when you come to Bandimere.
"To win tomorrow, you need to go from A to B four times, and we’ve done it only once so far this weekend, so we need to improve on our consistency.”
With Torrence’s outstanding run, Doug Kalitta and his Mac Tools dragster dropped to second with a 3.889 at 310.13. Rookie Brittany Force continued her hot-streak in her Castrol Edge dragster, holding the third spot with a 3.918 at 309.63 in what is her debut appearance at Bandimere Speedway. Seven-time world champion Tony Schumacher qualified No. 8 in his U.S. Army dragster, making the field on his final qualifying attempt, while defending event winner and world champion Antron Brown qualified No. 10.
In Funny Car, nobody could match Pedregon’s record-breaking run of 4.073 seconds at 307.37 mph from Friday, giving the two-time world champion the No. 1 qualifying spot for the third time in the season and 53rd time in his career. The Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry driver will be seeking his third win this season on Sunday. He will face No. 16 qualifier Todd Simpson in the first round.
“I was pleased with the run from Friday and our two runs from Saturday,” said Pedregon, who has two wins this season. “We came back with some really good information so we can come out ready to race (Sunday). I feel like the team is back on the page now. I’m very happy to retain our track record at Bandimere. This is a difficult place to race so it’s a nice little feather in our cap.”
Defending world champion Jack Beckman and his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger secured the second spot with a performance of 4.097 at 309.91. Sitting in the third slot is Tim Wilkerson, who powered his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang to a 4.114 at 302.21.
Rookie Arana secured his first career No. 1 qualifying spot with his time of 7.242 at 184.47 in Pro Stock Motorcycle on his ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Buell. Arana, running in just his eighth race, has advanced to one final in his career. He will meet No. 16 qualifier Katie Sullivan in her Gary Stoffer-tuned Tough Girl Designs Suzuki in the first round.
“I improved today so that was really nice,” said Arana. “My first run (from Friday) would have been good enough to be No. 1. This is confidence booster for the entire team but it adds a little pressure because everyone now expects you to do well. I’m excited for (Sunday).”
His brother Hector Arana Jr. maintained the No. 2 spot on his Lucas Oil Buell, running a 7.279 at 183.49 in the final qualifying session and will face No. 15 qualifier Jimmy Underdahl in the opening round. In the third spot is Colorado native Mike Berry with his time of 7.281 at 181.89 on his MB Precision/LAT Racing Oil Suzuki.
“This class is extremely competitive so I was not going to get my hopes up to be No. 1 at any race,” Arana said. “But now I feel like a win is next on the list. I feel like I’ve come a long way since my first race in Gainesville. I feel like I can not only ride the bike better but can also give better info to my dad and brother so we can make better tuning decisions.”

FRIDAY - KALITTA, C. PEDREGON, JOHNSON AND A. ARANA LEAD QUALIFYING AT BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY
Veteran Funny Car driver and two-time world champion Cruz Pedregon raced to the qualifying lead Friday at the 34th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at scenic Bandimere Speedway.
Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Adam Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 14th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Pedregon made the quickest run in the class and shattered his own track record during Friday’s second qualifying session with a performance of 4.073 seconds at 307.37 mph in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry. If the effort holds through Saturday’s two qualifying sessions (1:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.), it would be Pedregon’s third No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 53rd of his career. Sunday’s eliminations start at 11 a.m.
After a three straight first-round losses coming into the weekend, Pedregon, who fell to third in points during his recent slump, was pleased with the turnaround on Thunder Mountain on Friday.
"I consider it an honor to come back here and break that [track record from two years ago]. This track is awesome,” said Pedregon, a two-time winner in 2013. “It was still daylight when we ran; I was waiting for it to cool off a bit but conditions were great. I knew someone was going to run quicker than my 4.09 and I'm just glad it was us that did it. I'm actually surprised that more cars didn't run quicker.”
Reigning world champion and Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals event winner Jack Beckman was second in his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger with a 4.097 at 309.91, setting the Bandimere Speedway track speed record. Tim Wilkerson was third in his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang with a 4.114 pass at 302.21.
Kalitta powered his Mac Tools dragster to a leading performance of 3.889 at 310.13 during the second of two qualifying sessions on Friday. If his time holds, it would be his sixth No. 1 of the season and 37th of his career. Kalitta, who is seeking his first win of 2013, would also claim the No. 1 spot for the second straight race and third time in the past four events.
“We’re trying hard and love running here at Bandimere,” Kalitta said. “We just hope it holds through tomorrow and we stay No. 1. We gave it all we have and we’re real happy it stuck.”
Khalid alBalooshi was second in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster with a 3.924 second pass at 313.95 and rookie Brittany Force made a big jump to third in her Castrol Edge dragster, posting a 3.926 at 309.56.
In Pro Stock, defending Mello Yello world champion Johnson made a stunning run in the second qualifying session, posting a leading performance of 6.949 at 198.23 in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. If it holds, it would be the second No. 1 qualifier this season and 30th of his career. Another No. 1 qualifier in Denver would give Johnson his fourth straight No. 1 qualifier at the track and fifth in his standout career.
“In the first run, we didn’t get all the grip we wanted to but the sun went down and we did better," said Johnson, who has won four times on Thunder Mountain. "We’re very happy the way things are going and we hope we can keep the Mopar out front tomorrow."
Colorado native V. Gaines was second in his Kendall Oil Dodge Avenger with a 6.970 at 197.25 and Shane Gray was third in his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro with a 6.971 at 197.02.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, rookie Adam Arana made the quickest run of the first session of Friday’s qualifying on his ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Buell with a 7.267 second pass at 182.62. If the run holds through Saturday’s two qualifying sessions, it would give the PSM newcomer his first career No. 1 qualifier.
“We made an awesome hit,” Arana said. “I nailed all the shift points and the bike ran perfectly straight. I actually thought we’d be better in the second session but the bike didn’t shift into sixth gear."
Denver resident Mike Berry took the second spot with a 7.281 at 181.89 in his MB Precision/LAT Oil Suzuki followed by Michael Ray in third with a 7.289 at 180.48.
