SATURDAY QUALIFYING - HOSSLER RUNS IN THE 3.50s TO PACE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS

px

pnAlex Hossler laid down the first-ever, eighth-mile doorslammer pass in the 3.50s in the State of Michigan June 29, as he qualified number one in Pro Extreme for the ADRL Summer Drags IX at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park. Also securing first-place starts for Sunday's elimination rounds in Martin, MI, were Jim Laurita (Pro Nitrous), Elijah Morton (Extreme Pro Stock), Rickie Smith (Pro Mod), Ashley Owens (Pro Extreme Motorcycle), Ronnie Davis (Top Sportsman) and  Mark McElwee (Top Dragster). Additionally, Austin Jackson and Samuel Peterson placed number one in the ADRL's two Jr. Dragster classes.

Hossler, driving a '69 Camaro tuned by Frank "Ace" Manzo and Billy Stocklin, remained atop the Pro Extreme list throughout all four rounds of qualifying, though he participated in only three. After Hossler ran an outstanding 3.594 at 209.71 mph in the third session, he and his Al-Anabi Racing teammates opted out of the fourth, which was an unplanned addition after the day ran impressively smoothly.

Stepping up from 10th to second in the final qualifying round was Brandon Snider, who ran a career-best 3.612 at 208.53, with Tommy D'Aprile close behind in third with a 3.619 at 209.06-mph pass. After 18 entries made qualifying runs, Steve George secured the 16th and final race-day position with a 3.952 at 188.71 in Larry Jeffers' unique school bus entry.

xpsFresh off winning the ADRL race at Richmond, VA, early in the month from the number-one position, Laurita re-established his dominance with a career-best 3.765 at an also-class-leading 197.98 mph in his Brandon Switzer-tuned '68 Camaro. Like Hossler, Laurita led through all four qualifying sessions and set his best lap in the fourth and final round on Friday night.

"We're enjoying this while it lasts," Laurita said, "because as everyone knows, nothing lasts forever. I'm just thankful I get to experience this, but all the credit belongs to Brandon and my guys; they're the ones who deserve it."

Al-Anabi's Mike Castellana with crew chief Shannon Jenkins made their best pass this year with a 3.802 at 192.62 in the night session, followed by John Hall with a career-best 3.806 at 196.77 in his '68 Camaro and Steve Jackson in another '68 Camaro at 3.808 and 195.39 mph.

Also leading through all four qualifying sessions was Morton, who wrapped up with a 4.064 at 176.93 mph in his 2012 Mustang. Reigning back-to-back class champ Cary Goforth jumped from seventh to second in his 2010 GXP with a fourth-round 4.086 at 176.30, and Brad Waddle with his new '13 Mustang placed third in the 14-car field with a career-best 4.087 at 176.99 mph.

pxm"I could tell that was a good pass. It hiked the wheels up and carried them way down the track and it stayed straight while I just kept pulling gears," Morton said. "We've got a good hot rod, the crew is working great together and if we can only get the driver to do his job I think we can go some rounds tomorrow."

With 20 cars entered the decision was reached to conduct a 16-car race for only the second time with the Pro Mod class in ADRL competition and Smith put his 2013 Camaro on top of the qualifying list with a 3.873 blast at 193.79 mph. In round one of racing will face 2011 ADRL Pro Extreme champ Jason Hamstra, who was making his return to doorslammer racing at the Summer Drags IX.

Unfortunately, round four of Pro Mod qualifying was marred by the crash of Dave Roemer's new '68 Camaro, when he lost control in the right lane near half-track and eventually hit nose first into the left guardwall. Roemer was uninjured and clean-up was quick, but the Camaro sustained enough damage to require professional chassis repair.

The two-bike McKinney Motorsports team continued to dominate the Pro Extreme Motorcycle class, as teammates Owens and Eric McKinney took the top-two starting positions, respectively. Owens, the 2011 ADRL bike champ, finished on top with a 4.088 at 174.96, with McKinney, last year's champion, at 4.093 at 173.58, while Paul Gast was the best of the rest at 4.1113 and 172.02 mph. With only 10 bikes on the grounds, it would be an eight-bike field for race day.
pm
Chuck Mohn was the early leader in Top Sportsman qualifying, but once Davis dropped his 4.036 bomb at 183.43 mph in round two it was all over. Davis then came within one-thousandth of a second of backing it up for a potentially official record when he ran 4.077 with his '63 Corvette in round two. Mohn eventually finished in third place with a 4.072 at 175.05, with second-year driver Lizzy Musi between the two at 4.06 8 and 177.11 mph.

McElwee went from worst to first in round three of Top Dragster qualifying, as he didn't get down the track under full power in either of the first two sessions, but blasted through the Martin eighth mile in 3.809 seconds at 196.98 in round three.

Gates open at 9 a.m. on Sunday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, with opening ceremonies for the ADRL Summer Drags IX at 10:30 and eliminations set to begin at 11 a.m.
