NHRA - NEW ENGLAND NATS RESULTS
SUNDAY - C. FORCE, MASSEY, JOHNSON AND HALL RACE TO VICTORIES AT INAUGURAL NHRA NEW ENGLAND NATIONALS
In their first finals head-to-head matchup, Courtney Force claimed a memorable Funny Car victory against her legendary father John Force on Sunday at the Inaugural Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and John Hall (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 11th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Courtney Force earned her second victory in 2013 and third in her career, improving her overall record against her father, a 15-time Funny Car world champion, to 4-2. It was their first meeting in the finals. Courtney Force, who lost to John in the first round at Bristol Dragway last weekend, outran Alexis DeJoria, Tim Wilkerson and defending Funny Car world champion Jack Beckman to reach the championship round.
In the final round, Courtney Force powered her Traxxas Ford Mustang to a winning performance of 4.301 seconds at 261.67 mph, edging past John Force’s Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, which trailed with a 4.367 at 262.28.
“I definitely told him I was going to get some revenge (from last week) and we were able to do it. It was a lot of fun,” Courtney Force said. “We got down there and our car got in a little bit of trouble, but I had my foot on the throttle hoping he wouldn’t catch up. After the win, he came over and hugged me and congratulated me. We were both really excited and it was great for our team.”
With the win, Courtney Force moved to fourth in the points standings, while John Force, racing in his second straight final, jumped to fifth with the runner-up finish. Courtney Force also enjoyed the massive reaction from fans who packed New England Dragway all weekend for the NHRA’s debut at the track.
“It’s unbelievable. The fans out here are so amazing,” said Force, who celebrated her 25th birthday during the event. “They were so excited to have us out here. Adding another track in this part of the country, it was great. It really does mean a lot for me to be the first Funny Car winner at this race.”
In Top Fuel, Massey claimed his second victory of the season and 12th of his career, knocking off points leader Shawn Langdon in the final round in his Schumacher Electric dragster. Massey, who has advanced to finals in back-to-back weeks, covered the distance in 4.105 at 271.57 to knock off Langdon’s Al-Anabi Racing dragster, which smoked the tires early and finished with a 9.694 at 81.50.
“I’ve been jacked up all weekend, but I really wanted to win this inaugural event,” Massey said. “This whole area is filled with die-hard fans and they were so ready for NHRA drag racing, so this victory really means a lot to me. We were having the time of our life this weekend.”
Langdon jumped past Tony Schumacher in the points standings with the runner-up finish, while Massey stayed in third. Racing out of the No. 5 qualifying position, Massey beat Khalid alBalooshi, teammate Schumacher and No. 1 qualifier Doug Kalitta to reach the finals, running as quick as 3.814 at 323.81 on Sunday.
“Starting from the first round, it was tough,” Massey said. “When you’re in Top Fuel, it’s going to be tough no matter what because you have to compete with the best of the best. Racing Tony in the second round, that felt like a final. Shawn’s been cutting great lights all weekend long, but I was just trying to get the car to the finish line as quickly as possible.”
Johnson, the defending Pro Stock world champion, claimed his third victory in 2013 and 19th for his career by outrunning Shane Gray in the final round on a holeshot. Johnson’s Team Mopar Dodge Avenger posted a 6.642 at 205.38 while Gray ran 6.633 at 210.34 in his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro. The difference came down to Johnson’s stellar .025 reaction time on the starting line.
“We had a great day and we just kept adapting to the track,” Johnson said. “Our team really worked hard and that was a fantastic run we put together in the finals. We made a radical change after the semifinals to get ready for the finals, and it really worked. We found something that will help the rest of the season.”
Johnson took sole possession of second in the points standings with the victory, as Gray moved to sixth. To reach the finals, Johnson knocked off John Gaydosh, Tom Martino and points leader Mike Edwards in the semifinals. That victory also came on a holeshot, as Johnson posted a stellar .027 reaction time against Edwards.
“We’ve been doing a lot of testing and the testing is over,” Johnson said. “We’re in race mode from here on out. I think we showed here that we’re running well and hopefully we can keep that up going into the (Countdown To The Championship, NHRA’s six-race playoffs).”
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hall claimed his first career win after rookie Adam Arana, who was making his first finals appearance, fouled with a red-light start on his ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAV-TV Buell in the final. Hall went 6.924 at 193.93 on his Viper Motorcycle Company Buell en route to the victory.
“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” said Hall, a Hamden, Conn. resident who was also making his first final round appearance. “It’s just a special time. We needed it and it came at the right time and close to home. We’re just happy to be here. I can’t thank everybody enough. Matt Smith Racing has opened up a door of opportunity for me, and it’s worked out great.”
Hall, who moved to second in points behind Hector Arana Jr., knocked off Smith in the second round before beating LE Tonglet in the semifinals. Hall was also able to keep calm leading into his first finals appearance.
“You just have to stay focused and not do anything you’re going to regret,” Hall said. “I made some mistakes last year and I’m just trying to not do that this year.”
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues June 27-30 with the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago.
SATURDAY - PSM RIDER RAY CONTINUES RECENT HOT STREAK AT NEW ENGLAND NATIONALS
Michael Ray continued his recent hot streak in Pro Stock Motorcycle by racing to his first career No. 1 qualifying position Saturday at the Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals.
Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car), and Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) also were No. 1 qualifiers based on their performances from Friday and will also lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.
Riding the momentum from a victory at the last event to feature the bikes in Englishtown, N.J. in early June, Ray powered his Sovereign Star Racing Buell to a 6.832 second run at 197.05 mph to take the top spot in the two-wheel category at New England Dragway. The New Braunfels, Texas rider will face Angie Smith in the opening round.
“There’s not a lot of people in NHRA history who have sat on the pole in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class and now I can add my name to that list,” an excited Ray said. “I have always been the underdog and I have loved that position. Now I don’t mind to be able to stick my chest out a little bit and know that we have a really fast bike and that we will have to be someone to contend with for the rest of the season.”
Ray, who defeated Hector Arana Sr. to win at legendary Raceway Park in New Jersey three weeks ago, joined forces with successful bike team owner George Bryce during the off-season and the duo has quickly produced results five events into the 16-race Pro Stock Motorcycle season.
“We’ve really been going in the right direction and to come out of the truck and be this fast and earn our first No. 1 qualifying position at this inaugural event is a true testament to the progress the team has been making,” Ray said. “I just want to enjoy riding the wave because this is a humbling sport and you can be brought down in an instant.”
Arana Sr. qualified second on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.838 at 195.65 and will open against Shawn Gann, while yesterday’s top qualifier, Matt Smith, dropped to third in the order and will take on defending world champ Eddie Krawiec in a titan first round race.
In Top Fuel, Kalitta scored his fourth No. 1 of the season and 35th of his career with a 3.795 at 323.97 in his Mac Tools dragster. He will face Canadian Ike Maier in the first round.
“We struggled a little bit today getting down the track,” Kalitta said. “We tried this other blower that we have on that second run, and it definitely showed some sign there that it might be OK for us. All in all, I think we should be ready for tomorrow. We would have liked to have gotten down the track on that last qualifying run, but it will be alright. We’ll just go back to what we know, and go A to B.”
Shawn Langdon qualified second in the Al-Anabi Racing dragster with a 3.809 at 321.58 and he will open against Tim Boychuck. Australian David Grubnic qualified third in his Optima Batteries dragster and will face Terry McMillen.
Force scored his 142nd No. 1 in Funny Car and second of the season with his Friday effort of 4.051 at 313.44 in a Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. Force, who posted the two quickest runs on Saturday, will meet Dave Richards in the opening round. Richards, who is making his first Funny Car start at this event, will be the 136th different driver Force has faced in his career.
“It was low every round and all I can say is Mike Neff, Mike Neff, Mike Neff,” Force said. “I’m excited. This is an important market for our sponsors so we’re happy to give them a No. 1 and it’s a good weekend so far.”
Force is thrilled with the massive turnout of New England area fans who have greeted him in his pit area during this inaugural event.
“It has been packed all weekend,” Force said. “It makes you feel really good. This is awesome. This is a crowd that’s hungry for our sport and we need that. What excites me is to see the people. People have lots of options and up here they wanted a drag race. You can’t go anywhere around the area without getting approached from people. It's been great to see.”
Matt Hagan is second in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Charger with a 4.057 at 317.49 and he will meet fellow Virginian Blake Alexander in the first round. Last season's rookie of the year, Courtney Force, will start third in her Traxxas Ford Mustang with a 4.083 at 313.37 and she will meet rival Alexis DeJoria in the opening round.
Local Funny Car favorite Bob Tasca III, from Hope, R.I., qualified seventh in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang with a 4.096 at 312.13 and he will race defending world champion Jack Beckman in round one.
In Pro Stock, Coughlin claimed his second No. 1 of the season and the 19th of his career with a 6.533 at 212.43 in his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger.
“I owe a lot to the JEGS.com team and also to the J&J Racing/Mopar team,” Coughlin said. “They’ve done a great job of providing horsepower, and I feel fortunate to have such a great group in my corner. We’ve had a great season so far. Allen [Johnson, teammate] and I are second and third in the points [respectively], and there is only one team [Edwards] that is doing better than we are. We just need to take this momentum and carry it through the summer and hopefully keep the world championship in the J&J camp.”
Johnson will start second in his Team Mopar Avenger with a 6.549 at 212.79 and will race John Gaydosh, while series points leader Edwards is third and will race Kenny Delco in the opening round.

FRIDAY - FORCE, KALITTA, COUGHLIN AND SMITH TOP EPPING PRO QUALIFIERS
A week after breaking a 31-race winless streak, John Force thrilled New England fans and powered to the No. 1 qualifying spot in Funny Car on Friday at the Inaugural Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway.
Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Series event, the 11th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Force, a 15-time Funny Car world champion, powered his 8,000-horsepower Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to a run of 4.051 seconds at 313.44 mph to move to the top of the Funny Car qualifying field. If it holds, it would be Force’s second No. 1 qualifier in 2013 and 142nd of his career, the most in NHRA history.
Two qualifying sessions remain on Saturday (12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.) before Sunday’s eliminations at 11 a.m.
“We got around them there at Bristol (Dragway) on Father’s Day, and you didn’t really know what was going to happen here because we’ve got no data for this racetrack,” said Force, who has 135 career victories. “They can tell us how good the concrete is, and my clutch guy, Lanny Miglizzi, said it’s awesome. To come out here and run that kind of number, it was wonderful. We’re going to give these fans a show.”
Matt Hagan was right behind Force in his Magnetti/Marelli Mopar Dodge Charger, running 4.057 at 317.49. Courtney Force and Ron Capps both ran 4.083, as Force went 313.37 in her Traxxas Ford Mustang to claim third. Capps’ NAPA Dodge Charger ran 309.91 and is fourth overall.
John Force was also impressed with the strong fan turnout at the NHRA’s debut at New England Dragway.
“This is a great market, and we’re going to give these fans what they bought tickets for,” Force said. “This was a big crowd for a Friday night and it was pretty exciting. It’s just really great to be a part of the first NHRA race in this part of the country. I know all the drivers are excited, and the fans, they want those autographs. It goes on and on. It’s pretty cool.”
Kalitta raced to the top spot in his 8,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster, running 3.795 at 323.97, making the only Top Fuel run in the 3.70s on Friday. If it holds, Kalitta will claim his fourth No. 1 qualifier this season and 35th of his career.
Kalitta is also extra motivated this weekend after Tammy Oberhofer, the wife of his crew chief Jim Oberhofer, passed away this week after a battle with cancer.
“We’re definitely on a mission,” Kalitta said. “It’s just kind of heart-wrenching to go through what we’ve gone through this week, but we’re out here, and I’m sure Tammy’s riding with us this weekend. We’ve been trying to get a win, and she’s our biggest supporter out here, I think, over the years. Hopefully, we can do some good here this weekend and dedicate the win to her.
Shawn Langdon is currently second, running 3.809 at 321.58 in his Al-Anabi, and David Grubnic sits in third after going 3.817 at 321.96 in his Optima Batteries dragster. Kalitta took advantage of optimal conditions for Friday, positioning himself for what he hopes results in his first win of the season.
“The conditions got good here this evening, and we’re ready for (Saturday),” Kalitta said. “I think it will be a little warmer (Saturday), but we’ll be ready for (Saturday) and for Sunday. That first run, we were a little more conservative than we should have been, so Jim on that one I don’t think he had any intentions of being bashful with that. The thing ran good, and it stuck. I’m real proud of my team. They definitely got after it trying to make it stick, and it did, so hat’s off to them.”
In Pro Stock, Coughlin took command in the second qualifying session, running 6.533 at 212.43 in his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger. Points leader Mike Edwards and standout Jason Line followed him in the session, but neither could match Coughlin, a four-time Pro Stock world champion.
“That was a great run but by no means was I optimistic that it would hold up,” Coughlin said. “I thought for sure that Mike Edwards or Jason Line, who were sitting in the water behind me would be able to run at least as quick or quicker but we managed to hang on.”
Defending Pro Stock world champion Allen Johnson and his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger are currently second with a 6.547 at 212.26, while Edwards’ 6.549 at 212.09 in his I AmSecond/Interstate Batteries Chevy Camaro is third.
That run from Edwards was the top in the first session, but Coughlin made strong improvements during his second run on Friday. If it holds, it would be the second No. 1 qualifier this season and 19th of his career.
“We were very familiar with the atmospheric conditions here, but the track was new to all of us,” Coughlin said. “It was a little green so we were cautious with our set-up but as it turns out we were a little too aggressive on the first run. On the second run, the track came around and the temperature cooled off a little and it was much better. The car hiked the front end at the top of low gear it hiked the front end up and if there had been a camera under my helmet you’d have seen me grinning from ear to ear.”
Smith ran a 6.844 at 196.02 to take the initial top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Should that run hold it would be the second No. 1 qualifier of 2013 for Smith, the 2007 Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion, and the 20th for his career.
“Since this is a new track to us, we were a little conservative on our setup on the first run,” Smith said. “We were good from second gear on but missed it a little in the first 60 feet. On our second run, it was going to be better, but the bike would not shift. That was going to be a 6.83 or maybe even a 6.82. I should have a good bike this week. When we got here, we just went off our setup from Englishtown and made a couple of little tweaks.”
Smith has battled transmission problems in his Viper Motorcycle Company Buell at recent races, but he powered past the likes of Hector Arana Sr., who is second with a 6.866 at 191.27 in his Lucas Oil Buell, and Michael Ray, who took his Sovereign Star Racing Buell to third with a 6.898 at 194.91. Smith is also confident he will have the problem corrected for the rest of the weekend.
“We’re making more power than ever, and the tracks are better than ever, and we’ve been breaking input shafts,” Smith said. “It might be time for us to look at building something a little stronger. I thought I had fixed the problem earlier this year; I didn’t have any problems in Englishtown, but we’ll have to go back and take a look at it.”
