2012 NHRA CHARLOTTE-2 NATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - LANGDON WINS AT ZMAX DRAGWAY; CAPPS, LINE, HINES ALSO VICTORIOUS
Shawn Langdon raced to his first career Top Fuel victory Sunday at the rain-delayed O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries at zMAX Dragway.
Ron Capps (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also earned victories in their respective classes after the first of six playoff races in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.
Langdon defeated Tony Schumacher Sunday with a performance of 3.785 seconds at 326.71 mph in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster, holding off the hard-charging Schumacher, who finished in 3.808 at 322.27 in his U.S. Army dragster. Langdon won from the top qualifying position and beat Chris Karamesines, Bob Vandergriff and Brandon Bernstein to advance to the final round.
"I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason," Langdon said. "87 races into it, I've always kind of wondered, 'Man, what does it feel like? Why haven't I won? Is there something I'm doing wrong?' I had a car capable of winning at times driving for the Lucas family for three years, and I came to this team that Sheikh Khalid [Al Thani, team owner] and Alan Johnson [team manager] that was built around winning. It gets to the point where it's the Countdown and it's crunch time. You couldn't have scripted it any better. It's a surreal feeling.”
Schumacher took over the points lead with the runner-up finish after playoff top seed Antron Brown was eliminated in the first round when his Aaron’s/Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster encountered a mechanical issue midway down the track, sending Al-Anabi driver Khalid alBalooshi into the second round. Langdon moved to third in points with the victory and Brown dropped to fourth overall.
In Funny Car, Capps raced his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to his fourth victory of the season, defeating Mike Neff’s Castrol GTX Ford Mustang in the final. Capps sped to a winning run of 4.067 at 315.49 and increased his points lead as he heads into the second round of the six-race Countdown.
"We were pretty pumped up," said Capps, who beat Jim Head, Cruz Pedregon, and Matt Hagan in early rounds. "It just happens so fast, but what a race car. The car gives me confidence, but I learned a long time ago not to get overconfident. I was still a nervous wreck before the first round. I don't take anything for granted. Mike Neff is a guy who can throw down at any time. He ran the table and won the race in Indy, and, lo and behold, we were able to gut it out without lane choice in the second round in the semis.”
In Pro Stock, Line claimed his second win of the season in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro with a final round performance of 7.518 at 200.20, outrunning series points leader Allen Johnson in the final round. Johnson’s Team Mopar Dodge Avenger made quick move toward the center line off the starting line and he shut it off. Line defeated Frank Gugliotta, Larry Morgan and Warren Johnson in the first three rounds.
“Winning this race is a big way for us to start the Countdown but it doesn’t mean a whole lot unless you can keep going,” Line said. “To get any kind of lead at all is a good thing. Right now, the top six cars are all so good that whoever lets the clutch out first is usually going to win. That’s a lot to ask from anybody.”
Hines scored his fifth win of the season and 30th in his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle, beating teammate Eddie Krawiec to the finish line with a time of 6.862 seconds at 194.49 mph on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.
“We just tried to stay calm,” said Hines, who had a bye run and then beat Shawn Gann and Hector Arana Sr. to advance to his 51st career final round. “We just had to keep our focus all day long and we were on a mission when we came here, to defend our regular season win streak of 10 in a row and we needed to come out here and see if we could do that. Luckily, everything all in the end panned out for us and it’s just a great feeling to start off the Countdown this way.”
Krawiec continues to lead the Countdown to the Championship points by 10 over Hines.
The NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship continues Sept. 20-23 with the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
SUNDAY - RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY AGAIN
Sunday's competition at the O'Reilly NHRA Nationals is presently under rain delay. Race officials had planned for a 12:30 start and were in the midst of prerace festivities when the skies opened with a relatively solid rain shower.
SATURDAY - LANGDON SCORES TOP QUALIFYING POSITION IN TOP FUEL; WILKERSON, NOBILE, HINES ALSO LAND NO. 1 SPOTS
Shawn Langdon earned the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Saturday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries.
Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also secured No. 1 qualifying spots in their respective categories at zMAX Dragway for the first of six races in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
Langdon was quickest in the Top Fuel class with a performance of 3.807 seconds at a speed of 324.12 mph in in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster, earning his second consecutive No. 1 qualifying position, third of the season and fourth in his career. He is confident about his team’s chances heading into Sunday’s noon eliminations. Langdon will race legendary driver Chris Karamesines in the opening round.
"We made a pretty good run on Friday night and got acclimated to a hotter racing surface today," said Langdon, who is seeking his first career victory. "I think tomorrow will be a lot like it was today. We have some work to do to run better in the warmer weather, but [teammate] Khalid alBalooshi made a couple of nice runs today that give us some good info. Sheikh Khalid [Al Thani, owner] built this team around winning, and we're hoping to achieve that in a short amount of time. We're heading in the right direction.”
Spencer Massey was second in his FRAM dragster with a 3.811 at 322.73 and Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner Tony Schumacher was third in his U.S. Army dragster with a 3.817 at 320.05. Top Fuel’s No. 1 seed for the playoffs, Antron Brown, qualified 10th and will face Khalid alBalooshi in the opening round.
Wilkerson drove his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang to a performance of 4.048 at 309.70 to claim his first top qualifying position of the season and 17th of his career. He will face rookie Todd Lesenko in the first round.
"Starting the Countdown with a couple of points and a No. 1 qualifier is a big step in the right direction," Wilkerson said. "You go into the Countdown in 10th place, and there's nowhere to go but up. We're real excited to be here. I told my guys when we started this deal that we need to win two rounds per weekend. All those rounds will add up to where they'll have to contend with us in Pomona.”
Former zMAX winner Jack Beckman was second with 4.082 at 306.53 in his Valvoline NextGen Dodge Charger, while U.S. Nationals winner Mike Neff was third in his Castrol Ford Mustang with a 4.093 at 313.44. In one of the most interesting first round matchups, No. 6 qualifier Courtney Force will face her father, 15-time world champ John Force. Funny Car top seed Ron Capps qualified fourth in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger.
In Pro Stock, Vincent Nobile claimed his first career No. 1 qualifying position by powering his Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger to a performance of 6.548 at 211.03. He will race Lewis Worden in the first round.
“My team and I are ecstatic for our first No. 1,” Nobile said. “The car is just running really good. Like I said yesterday and today it performed just as well. Honestly, today we were No. 1 for the first session and Q 4 I actually goofed up a little bit with the burnout, which we might have even been No. 1 for that session as well. We still took the pole position for the weekend, so we’re happy about that and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Defending world champion Jason Line and NHRA Four-Wide Nationals winner Greg Anderson were second and third in their Summit Racing Chevy Camaros. Countdown top seed Allen Johnson was fourth in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger with a 6.563 at 211.23 and will face four-time world champ Jeg Coughlin in the opening round.
Hines earned his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 33rd of his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle. He topped the two-wheel category with a performance of 6.851 at 195.82 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Hines will open with a bye run as only 15 motorcycles are qualified.
“I have never had a planned bye run in the first round,” Hines said. “I’ve had opponents break before staging a couple of times and the starter would walk over and give you the No. 1 finger. To actually know going into tomorrow that we have a bye run is kind of nice. It’s unfortunate for the class that we didn’t have a full field, but to have the chance to learn for a tune-up first round and take a stab at something that we may not try first round on Sunday is going to be beneficial to us.”
Playoff top seed Eddie Krawiec was second on his Harley-Davidson with a 6.853 at 195.51, and Hector Arana Jr. was third on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.854 at 195.14.

FRIDAY - WILKERSON LEADS FUNNY CAR COMPETITION AFTER DAY ONE; LANGDON, NOBILE, HINES ALSO TOPS IN THEIR CLASSES
Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson raced to the qualifying lead Friday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway.
Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the first of six NHRA playoff events.
Wilkerson led the Funny Car field with a time of 4.048 seconds at 309.70 mph in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang and continued his momentum from the U.S. Nationals where he made a late charge to qualify for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
"We've had a good car the last two or races, and we're trying to capitalize on it starting in qualifying," Wilkerson said. “I think qualifying points will play a big part of this. Bonus points got me into the Countdown when you look at Brainerd and Indianapolis. I curse them when I'm doing bad and applaud them when I'm doing well. I'm a perfect politician.”
In Top Fuel, Langdon powered his Al-Anabi dragster to a performance of 3.807 at 324.12. This would be his second top qualifying position in a row and third of the season if his performance stands after Saturday’s final qualifying rounds (12:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.).
“I guess right now would be the perfect time to peak," Langdon said. "We've been making a lot of changes to the car, and it's been responding very well. We saw a bunch of cars smoke the tires in front of us on the last run. I saw Alan [Johnson, tuner] and Brian [Husen, crew chief] get busy making adjustments, and whatever they did held. There's a possibility we could improve on that tomorrow, but hopefully it will stick.”
In Pro Stock, Vincent Nobile claimed the top position by powering his Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger to a performance of 6.548 at 211.03. If his time stands, this would be his first career No. 1 qualifying position.
“I’m new to this. I’ve never been No. 1 before,” Nobile said. “I knew it was a great run. I’m shocked at how fast we went. We went back, looked at our computer graph and it was literally a perfect run. I have to thank the crew for giving me a great car.”
Hines, who has earned two No. 1 qualifying positions this season in Pro Stock Motorcycle, earned the qualifying lead with a performance of 6.851 at 195.82 on his Vance & Hines Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson.
“Both runs today were very exceptional,” Hines said. “The bike ran perfectly straight and that’s when it puts up big elapsed times. We credit that to the testing we did before Indy. With our set-up, we run a good 330-foot number and that translates to our quarter-mile runs.”
