SUNDAY - HALE, HARRIS HEADLINE WINNERS CROWNED AT CHRR

chrr

The 20th anniversary NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion was a smooth yet excitingly eventful affair as season champions were crowned and event winners were awarded hard-fought-for trophies.

While elsewhere in the country sweaters and coats were coming out of the hall closet, the Southern California sunshine warmed the surface at Auto Club Famoso Raceway and sun-kissed the cheeks and arms of a tremendous amount of spectators. A good time was had by all, but it was especially fine for the victors: Neal Miner (AFX), Tim Brown (Nostalgia Eliminator 1), Dean Hall (A/Gas), Bob Lander (Junior Fuel), Kin Bates (A/Fuel), Ronnie Lennon (7.0 Pro), John Hale (Funny Car), and Brett Harris (Top Fuel).

For Harris, the win was particularly sweet as it came over a guy who had been throwing out some incredible numbers during eliminations: Tony Bartone. Making that final-round victory even sweeter? The fact that it was awarded based on starting line performance; Harris edged Bartone on a holeshot, starting the run on a .075 to .108 launch and finishing up with a triumphant 5.725 to Bartone's quicker 5.693 and resoundingly booming 269.29 mph – the fastest speed recorded for a Nostalgia Top Fuel dragster. The margin of victory was just six inches, or .0012-second.

"I just knew all day today everyone was ahead of me in e.t., so I had to have my game on the tree," said Harris. "What I did in the final is what I had to do all day long, so I wasn't shocked. I was hoping for better, but that's okay. We got what we were after –the win."

Harris was actually second to leave in the first round but still got the win, his .126 reaction to Brendan Murry's near-psychic .016 overshadowed by a victorious 5.774 to 6.235. Round he was first to leave and first to the finish in an important defeat of fellow championship chaser Jim Murphy, and in the semifinals Harris got the win light over No. 1 qualifier Jimi Young, 5.724 to 5.908.

Harris also leaves Auto Club Famoso Raceway with the biggest trophy of all – the season championship.

"We've been doing this for 14 years, and we've got a great team," he said. "We just set a goal to have fun, and that's what we did, but we have quite a few wins under our belts, and [this makes] three championships for me, so it's all good. It's been a good weekend, and we feel real good about next year. We're looking forward to seeing what it will bring."

The Funny Car final did not disappoint either, with Kris Krabill and John Hale prepared to exhibit their best in pursuit of the event title. Krabill was off the starting line first, recording a strong .062 to .151 reaction, but by the 60-foot timers the lead was in the hands of Hale. At the finish line stripe, an astounding 5.58, 255.97 mph flashed on Hale's side to defeat Krabill's respectable 5.78 and 248.75 mph.

Hale stopped Jon Capps in the opening round, did away with Mike Halstead in the quarterfinals and raced past James Day in the semis to earn his berth in the final.

The NHRA Heritage Series will return to Auto Club Famoso Raceway March 1-2-3 for the annual March Meet, another spectacular gala not to be missed by nostalgia hot rod enthusiasts.

SATURDAY - POTENTIAL CHRR CHAMPS CHOMPING AT THE BIT

chrr

Eliminations for the Nostalgia Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters were underway as the second day of the California Hot Rod Reunion concluded, and round one is already but a memory. Surprisingly, No. 1 qualifier Paul Romine was a no-show to the opening round after posting another quick run – a 5.70 – that complemented his extra-efficient 5.698 clocked in the first session of qualifying on Friday.

"We serviced the car and got it ready for the next round, started it, and the oil pressure wasn't where it should have been," said Romine. "We messed with it a little bit, changed the oil pump, pulled the pan, and found one little main bearing nicked – and then we found one that was completely turned. They were already up in the staging lanes, so we didn't have time to change engines."

Despite the disappointment of being halted after qualifying so well, Romine was optimistic about the future.

"This is a mechanical thing," he said. "Our tune-up is good and keeps getting better. We were good at Las Vegas, that's where it kind of came around, and we ran consistent .80s there. When we went to Boise, we rolled off the trailer and were low e.t. and ran consistent 5.90s. We had a good car for this place, and there is no way we could have done anything with the points, but I think we had a good chance to win the race. You have to run it to win it, though. Our guys do a bitchen job, but the drag racing Gods just said no way."

Meanwhile, Jason Rupert inched ever-closer to his first championship title by ousting Steve Nichols, 5.774 to 5.951. He will take on Stephen Densham in the second round – with Romine out, Densham is the only guy left with Rupert in reach.

Friday's No. 1 candidate in the Top Fuel category, Wisconsin-based Jimi Young, blasted to a ridiculous 5.593 in his final qualifying effort on Saturday that was a tenth quicker than next-best Rick White. Young scored a freebie in the first round when No. 16 qualifier Jim Boyd was a no-show.

The stand-out act of the first round of Top Fuel eliminations, though, was Mr. Tony Bartone, who dropped a stunner on the crowd with a 5.566 at 263.41 mph in his smooth defeat of the higher-qualified Bill Dunlap. Yowzer!

Round two will line up incoming points leader Brett Harris, who stopped Brendan Murry in the eliminations-opener, and Jim Murphy, second in the standings. Rick White, just a point behind Murphy at the onset, bested Michael Irwin and will see what he can do against Bartone tomorrow.

Other low qualifiers of the day included Bob Murphy (7.0 Pro), Ken Ratzloff (A/Gas), Bob Lander (Junior Fuel), Kin Bates (A/Fuel).

The final day of the 20th anniversary California Hot Rod Reunion will begin at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

FRIDAY - ROMINE TOPS FIRST DAY RUNS AT CHRR

chrr

The first day of the 20th annual California Hot Rod Reunion at Auto Club Famoso Raceway concluded with Paul Romine and the Man O' War Nostalgia Funny Car atop the pole and Jimi Young, of Salem, Wis., leading the Nostalgia Top Fuel dragsters.

Qualifying went off with nary a hitch as 31 Funny Cars and 15 dragsters aimed for prime positions in their respective fields. Romine, of Fishers, Ind., made his impressive 5.698, 241.58 mph blast in the second pair out, ousting initial leader James Day and Dale Pulde's War Eagle from their temporary top spot, securing the lead quite early, and giving the rest of the bulging field something to aim for.

And oh, how they tried. There were 13 floppers that ran in the 5-second zone, and only a handful that really suffered problems. The show was fantastic for the crowd, with racers like Kris Krabill pedaling through tire shake – in the Pedaler, no less – and still managing a 5.875 and the No. 8 position.

For Young, the trip all the way out West was more than just enjoying a respite from the cooling temperatures of Wisconsin, and the long journey is already proving worth his time and effort. Just three pairs into the first session of qualifying, Young reeled off a quick 5.775, 235.02 mph that would hold as the rest of the dragsters raced against it.

Next quickest was Denver Schutz with a 5.785, and incoming points leader Brett Harris ended the day 8th on a 5.987, 232.75 mph pass.

Other low qualifiers at the end of the first day of the CHRR included Ken Ratzloff (A/Gas), Kin Bates (A/Fuel), Lynsi Martinez (AFX), Gabe Wood (Nostalgia Eliminator 1), Bob Lander (Junior Fuel), and Bob Murphy (7.0 Pro).

AEROMOTIVE’S A2000 FUEL PUMP REMAINS ON TOP OF THE FIELD

11202_editFor more than 10 years, the Aeromotive A2000 (P/N 11202) Fuel Pump has dominated the world of drag racing. Fueling champion and after champion in multiple classes and multiple sanctions. Never before has a fuel pump celebrated so many wins with such diverse applications.

In 2011, after years of success, Aeromotive is celebrating the A2000’s dominance with a renewed focus. “Its hard to match the durability and performance of the A2000 Fuel Pump,” said Steve Matusek, President and Founder of Aeromotive Fuel System. “We hear from racers all the time, wanting to make sure they still have the latest and greatest from Aeromotive. Its almost as if they figure there has to be some new development in the fuel system world,” Steve continued. “While there has been a lot, the A2000 has remained a constant and it’s hard to argue with its overwhelming success.”

The Aeromotive A2000 has fueled 3 out of the last 4 NHRA Pro Stock World Champions including Mike Edwards and 4-time World Champ, Jeg Coughlin Jr. In fact, Jeggy was a back-to-back World Champion and he fueled his car with same Aeromotive A2000 Fuel Pump, every single pass for 3 straight years. That pump never left the car. Now that is durability!

That is the type durability you can expect from Aeromotive. It’s a value that they hang their hat on. “With every product we design, we identify a problem, engineer a solution to that problem, test the product on our own vehicles and then stand behind our product and the racers that support us,” said Matusek. “The A2000 was no different. We knew we could engineer a ‘big’ carbureted pump that was extremely efficient, provided optimum pressure control and would be durable.” It’s the reason you’ll find the A2000 in car after car at the track. From the sportsman racers to the Pro Mods and Pro Stock, the Aeromotive A2000 is the choice of champions.

Other champions in 2010 include NMCA Pro Street racer, Chris Rini, Super Street 10.5W racer, Tony Nesbit; Mean Street racer, Jeremy Gillam; Open Comp racer, Don Bowles; Late Model EFI racer, Al Corda; LSX All Motor Champ, Judson Massingill; and LSX Rumble Champ, Kurt Anderson. National Champions in the NHRA include NHRA Stock Champ, Brad Burton and NHRA Super Comp Champ, Gary Stinnett. In the NMRA, champions include NMRA Hot Street Champ, Charlie Booze Jr.
