SUNDAY FINAL: PERSONETT WINS VEGAS EVENT; VON SMITH WINS TITLE

VON SMITH CLAIMS GET SCREENED AMERICA PRO MOD SERIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Brad Personett raced to his second victory of the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Meanwhile, Tennessee driver Von Smith clinched the inaugural series championship title in the NHRA’s newest national touring series.

Personett defeated top qualifier Melanie Troxel in the final round. Personett powered his turbocharged ’68 Personett Performance ’68 Camaro to a run of 5.859 seconds at 254.57 mph to hold off the hard-charging Troxel, who trailed with a 5.984 at 244.69 in her In-N-Out Burger ’68 Camaro.

With the victory, Personett, who also defeated Joe Baker, Roger Burgess and Jay Payne in earlier rounds, moved to third in the final point standings.

Smith, who claimed the $50,000 champion’s prize after he took the tree in the first round of eliminations, eventually lost in the quarterfinals in his Barwa/Al-Anabi Racing ’68 Camaro.  Smith claimed victories at St. Louis, Englishtown, N.J. and Bristol, Tenn. during the season to earn the championship title.

The remainder of the top five points finishers are second place Danny Rowe, fourth place Troy Coughlin and race runner-up Troxel in fifth.

 SATURDAY QUALIFYING: TROXEL TAKES TOP SPOT HEADED INTO SUNDAY

Melanie Troxel claimed her first No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday in the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the DSB_2916NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

The versatile drag racing veteran, who also is competing in Funny Car action in the NHRA Full Throttle Series at this event, won at the last Pro Mod event at Charlotte, N.C. in her In-N-Out Burger ’63 Corvette.  Troxel earned the top qualifying position by posting a quick performance of 5.907 seconds at 246.30 mph at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Troxel will face Chip King in Sunday’s opening round of eliminations, which will begin at approximately 10 a.m. local time at the final of 10 races in the 2010 season.

Series points leader Von Smith, who qualified No. 6 in his Barwa/Al-Anabi Racing ’68 Camaro, will become the first world champion in NHRA’s newest national touring series by taking the tree in the first round against Mike Knowles.

Other key first round pairings include No. 2 qualifier Brad Personett taking on Joe Baker; No. 3 qualifier Jay Payne will meet Dennis Radford; and No. 4 qualifier Rick Stivers will face Ed Hoover.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING: TROXEL LEADS GSA PRO MODIFIED QUALIFYING


Melanie Troxel was quickest in the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series Friday at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

troxelTroxel powered her In-N-Out Burger ’68 Camaro to a leading performance of 5.925 seconds at 243.94 mph to lead the 16-car field at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"You can't ask for a better start," Troxel said. "To come out and put up a number that's six-hundredths clear of the field affords you the opportunity to really get after it in round two, which is exactly what we did. It ended up that we weren't quicker but we were fast again and not many cars got down the track, so we're really happy.”

Series points leader Von Smith qualified fourth in his Barwa/Al-Anabi Racing ’68 Camaro with a 5.984 at 242.06. Smith, who leads second place Danny Rowe by 90 points, can clinch the inaugural Get Screened America Pro Mod Series world championship tomorrow by taking the tree in the first round of eliminations at the final of 10 races in NHRA's newest national touring series.

Rowe is qualified sixth in his Sterling Bridge ’67 Camaro. Indy winner Brad Personett is second in the lineup with a 5.945 at 241.37 and Roger Burgess is holding down the third spot with a 5.984 at 242.89 in his ProCare Rx ’68 Camaro.

The final Get Screened America Pro Mod Series qualifying session is Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and the first round of eliminations begins later that day at 4:30 p.m.
