MONDAY FINAL RESULTS - DIXON, TASCA, EDWARDS AND PHILLIPS WIN NHRA SUPERNATIONALS

092LarryDixonEtownLarry Dixon raced to his sixth Top Fuel victory of the season Monday afternoon at the rain-delayed NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Bob Tasca, Mike Edwards and Michael Phillips also were winners at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Dixon posted a performance of 3.824 seconds at 320.05 mph in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to take his 54th career victory by defeating Antron Brown, who finished runner-up at this event for the second straight time as his Matco Tools dragster lost traction near mid-track.

“Trophies like these – what I call the majors – always shine a little brighter for me," Dixon said about winning for the sixth time in his career at the historic track. "This race, Indy, Pomona, Gainesville, and even Columbus back then, you want to do well. I feel blessed to be able to race well on tracks like these.”

Tasca claimed his first win of the season and third of his career by defeating Del Worsham in the Funny Car final. Initially the electronic timers showed Worsham’s Al-Anabi Racing Toyota as the winner, but the timing data later revealed Tasca actually crossed the finish line at the 1,000-foot mark first in his special themed Ford Parts.com Shelby Ford Mustang and NHRA officials overturned the outcome.

“It's hard to put words together right now,” said an emotional Tasca said after winning at his longtime home track. “This is a special place for my family and to win here with all of my family here is just unbelievable. These are the moments you dream about as a kid laying in bed. This is a moment I'll treasure forever. I know that my grandfather's not here, but he's looking on from above.”

Edwards took his seventh Pro Stock win of the season and third in a row by outrunning rookie Shane Gray in the final round. Edwards posted a 6.596 at 209.39 in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP, while Gray’s Tire Kingdom GXP trailed with a 6.634 at 209.07.

“Last year was a dream season with the championship, but this year is truly a dream come true," Edwards said. "I've done this a long, long time and to experience this kind of success, I just praise the Lord for his blessings. We have a great team and committed ourselves to doing this, and it’s good to see the results.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Phillips used a holeshot start on his Suzuki to defeat Steve Johnson for his second victory of the season and fifth of his career. Phillips covered the distance in 6.911 at 194.32 and just edged Johnson’s quicker Suzuki at the finish line, which ran a quicker, but losing, 6.886 at 194.63. With the victory, Phillips moves to second in the point standings.

"It's been a great weekend to set the track record now that we've finally gotten a handle on the clutch, which has always been my biggest problem,” Phillips said. “I can't thank Craig Treble enough for coming over and showing me some things."

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues June 18-20 with the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway.

ESPN2 HD will provide coverage of the rain-delayed NHRA SuperNationals final rounds during the qualifying show for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals (June 19, 7 p.m. ET) and during next weekend's edition of NHRA Race Day (June 20, 3:30 p.m. ET).

SUNDAY - MOTHER NATURE GETS THE LAST WORD IN E-TOWN

worsham

The NHRA fell short; one round to be exact, of finishing the SuperNationals on Sunday. Persistent rain showers provided the impetus for competition to edwards_450continue into Monday morning.

Competition will resume at 10 AM, EST., beginning with the incomplete fifth round of Stock eliminator and other sportsman divisions.

Professional eliminations are slated for 11 AM.

Top Fuel had whittled down to a battle between current points leader Larry Dixon and Antron Brown. Dixon reached the final round on the strength of victories over Steve Chrisman, Tony Schumacher and Brandon Bernstein. Browns final round appearance came at the expense of Scott Palmer, Terry McMillen and Doug Kalitta.

The Funny Car division will showcase a monster battle between veteran Del Worsham and third-year driver Bob Tasca III. The two have never met in a final round. They have raced only once this season with Worsham scoring the victory.

Mike Edwards and Shane Gray are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of Pro Stock final round appearances. Englishtown marked the seventh final this season for Edwards while Gray is in the first of his career.

Michael Philips has parlayed his No. 1 qualifying effort into a ride to the final round as he will meet Steve Johnson in an all-Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle final round.

The GSA Pro Modified division will be an all-Al Anabi final round between the nitrous-injected entry of Mike Castellana and the supercharger-equipped Camaro of Von Smith.

A total of four Al Anabi Racing teams are in the final rounds on Monday.

SATURDAY - McCLENATHAN SETS PACE IN TF WITH QUICKEST RUN IN NHRA HISTORY

1024-02502

Hight, Edwards and Phillips round out No. 1 qualifiers
1024-02760
Cory McClenathan secured his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season when his quickest pass in NHRA Full Throttle Series history from Friday wasn’t threatened on Saturday as qualifying concluded at the 41st annual NHRA Supernationals.

There were no changes in any of the other three categories either as Robert Hight (Funny Car), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and Michael Phillips (Pro Stock Motorcycle) remained on top of their respective qualifying ladders at the 11th of 23 races in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season.

McClenathan’s 3.752-second pass at 324.75 mph from Friday night in the FRAM dragster was the quickest and second-fastest run in since NHRA moved to 1000-foot racing two years ago. It was the 37th No. 1 of his career.

“We know it’s hot and had to dial it back a bit today, but we ran a (4.)81 this morning and I think it was going to repeat that on the afternoon run before it knocked the burst panel out. (Sunday), with the bye run, if the conditions are right, I think you’ll see us go for that national record.”

1024-02680“I expected Larry (Dixon) to be right there with us, (Tony) Schumacher, too,” said McClenathan, “and I expect to have to go toe to toe with them (Sunday), too. The playing field is really level; there’s a lot of parity out there now. It’s not just four good cars anymore – there’s six, seven, eight good cars. Anyone who qualifies can win.”

Hight (4.025, 313.00) remained red-hot with his third straight No. 1, fifth of 2010, and the 37th of his career in just his 127th race. Hight and the Auto Club Ford Mustang team have been to four straight final rounds – winning three times – to assume the points lead in Funny Car from John Force, who’d led the Funny Car standings from Race 1 to Race 9.

“That last run today (a best-of-session 4.138) was huge,” said Hight. “We smoked the tires the first session and then low e.t. of the session tonight, so that was big and gives (crew chief) Jimmy Prock something to tune on.”

In Pro Stock, defending NHRA Full Throttle Series champion Edwards (6.513, 211.49) set both ends of the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park track record in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to record his NHRA-leading ninth No. 1 this season.

“We’ll just race the race like we always do and do your job. If I do mine and the crew does theirs, our chances are good. If we don’t, we won’t win. There are too many good cars out there right now and we’re all so close. It’s down to who does the best job Sunday.”
1024-02627
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Michael Phillips’ track records for e.t. and speed from Friday aboard the Phillips Racing Suzuki – 6.855, 197.16 – held up to give him his first career No. 1 qualifier in his 160th career race.

“I’m just trying my best to ride that motorcycle and hit all my shifts and hope I can seal the deal (Sunday),” said Phillips. “We knew today was going to be hot and slippery out there so we’re trying some things in the clutch today.

“It's supposed to be hot (again Sunday), but I’m from Louisiana where it’s always hot, and I can make my bike run pretty good when the weather is bad.”

Final eliminations at the NHRA Supernationals begin Sunday at 11 a.m.
