Tony Schumacher raced to his first victory of the season and in the process moved into the NHRA Full Throttle Series points lead Sunday at the Tire tf_winnerKingdom NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Tim Wilkerson, Jason Line and Eddie Krawiec also were winners in their respective categories at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Schumacher earned his fourth Gatornationals win and 62nd of his career by powering his U.S. Army dragster to a performance of 3.797 seconds at 322.04 mph while teammate Antron Brown’s Matco Tools dragster lost traction in the runner-up effort.

The seven-time Top Fuel world champ beat Terry McMillen, Doug Foley and rival Larry Dixon to advance to the final round.

“It was a perfect win for this team,” said Schumacher, who posted the national speed record at 324.98 mph in a thrilling side-by-side win over Dixon in the semifinals. “This is something we needed to do. Now we’re in the points lead and that’s important as we go to Charlotte for the four-wide race.”

nfc_winnerWilkerson scored his 14th career victory by holding off defending race winner and teammate Bob Tasca in the Funny Car final. Wilkerson’s Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang finished in 4.097 at 303.78, while Tasca’s Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang trailed with a 4.192 at 287.17.

Wilkerson beat Jeff Arend, top qualifier Matt Hagan and two-time world champ Tony Pedregon to advance to the final round, his first at the Gatornationals.

“When you run well and you run consistent, people will show you enough respect to try pretty hard against you,” Wilkerson said. “We did have a good day today. I’m not going to say we were world-beaters, but we made some pretty darn good runs to keep them on their toes.”

Line used a quicker reaction time to defeat Mike Edwards in the Pro Stock final. Line claimed his 21st career win, first of the season and second-straight at this event with a winning performance of 6.581 at 210.14 in his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP to overcome Edwards’ quicker, but losing Penhall/Interstate Batteries GXP, which posted a 6.556 at 211.16.

“It really wasn’t a good weekend, actually,” Line said. “We started out awful, and I didn’t think we were going to qualify. Going into the third session, I really felt like this was going to be the time we didn’t qualify. But we got it done somehow. We didn’t run great, that’s for sure, but I guess right now the only way to beat Mike is with your left foot because you’re not going to outrun him. Fortunately, he gave us the opening, and we managed to get it done somehow.”

psm_winnerIn Pro Stock Motorcycle, Krawiec claimed his sixth career victory with a 6.899 at 195.68 on his Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to beat surprise finalist Shawn Gann, who posted a 6.908 at 194.21 on his RumBum Buell.  It was Gann’s first final round appearance since 2004.

“Gainesville is very special to me,” said 2008 world champ Krawiec, who beat Angie Smith, Steve Johnson and Craig Treble in the first three rounds. “Years ago when I first started out, I wanted to win here. To finally get a win here, I can’t be any more excited. We ended 2009 with a win in Pomona and to start 2010 with another one is awesome.”

Top qualifier Karen Stoffer earned a 20-point bonus for setting the national elapsed time record with a 6.847-second run on her GEICO Powersports Suzuki in the first-round, but was upset in the quarterfinals by Gann.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues March 25-28 with the 4-Wide NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C.

SATURDAY - EDWARDS WINS RESCHEDULED PHOENIX PRO STOCK ELIMINATIONS AND CLAIMS NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION FOR TIRE KINGDOM GATORNATIONALS
brown

Brown, Hagan and Stoffer also No. 1 qualifiers at Gainesville Raceway

edwardsMike Edwards accomplished a rare feat Saturday at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals when he raced to a Pro Stock victory and a No. 1 qualifying position in the same day at historic Gainesville Raceway.

The defending NHRA world champ powered his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to a win in the completion of the weather-delayed NHRA Arizona Nationals and scored his third No. 1 qualifying effort of the season and 25th of his career.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Edwards scored his second win of the season and 22nd of his career by outrunning rookie driver Bob Yonke in the final. It was Yonke’s first final round appearance in his first NHRA start. Edwards posted a winning performance of 6.552 at 211.16, while Yonke trailed with a 6.601 at 209.36 in his Adrenaline Motorsports GXP.

Edwards took the top qualifying spot for the Gatornationals with a 6.537-second run at a speed of 211.56 mph.

“A win’s a win,” Edwards said. “I am real thankful. We’ve come here to Gainesville and ran good. We had some changes to the rules and my guys made the changes and we’ve done well. I am real proud of them.”

In Top Fuel, Brown powered his Matco Tools dragster to a track-record time of 3.803 at 321.04 to earn his first No. 1 of the season and 22nd of his career (11th in Top Fuel).

“To come out here and do this is definitely a blessing,” Brown said. “I just want to take it one step at a time, and being No. 1 qualifier is definitely putting a foot in the right direction, and I’m stoked about that. It feels good to get two solid laps back to back. It’s not just being No. 1; it’s just getting two solid laps back to back because that gives you confidence going into race day where you can go round to round.”

Hagan claimed his third Funny Car top qualifying effort with a 4.060 at a track-record speed of 313.58 in his DieHard Dodge Charger.

“First of all, it’s great to snag the No. 1 spot,” Hagan said. “I have a little history here [in Gainesville] with the Pro Mod car, and this is big. I knew Tommy [DeLago, crew chief] was going for it because we were already qualified. When the clutch went one-to-one, I knew it was gonna run.”

Earlier in the day, Hagan’s Don Schumacher Racing-owned team announced that former John Force Racing crew chief John Medlen had joined his team and would be working alongside DeLago as co-crew chief.
stoffer
“As for John Medlen, I’m not sure what his impact is yet,” Hagan said. “He’s feeling his way through everything. I’m sure he had some input, and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of stuff from him and Tommy. I’m really excited and can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow. We need to put four runs together on race day. We always qualify well, but we need to get that Wally on Sunday.”

Stoffer earned her second career No. 1 position in Pro Stock Motorcycle, speeding to a track-record time of 6.855 at 194.77 on her GEICO Powersports Suzuki.

“We knew we had a fast bike, and I just had to do my job,” Stoffer said. “I was excited that they gave me the performance, and I was able to do my job and put the package together and get that No. 1 back. I’ve had the No. 1 before, but I’ve never had to fight for it like that, so it was pretty cool to be able to do that.”

SATURDAY - EDWARDS BRINGS CLOSURE TO NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS PRO STOCK

Mike Edwards mercifully but powerfully put a period Saturday on the end of the ill-fated National Hot Rod Association's Arizona Nationals.
DSA_1385This race that spanned 20 days and 1,800 miles, survived rain delays at both Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix and Gainesville Raceway a continent away in north central Florida,  and seemingly had no winners, in one sense -- certainly no winners circle celebration -- finished during the final day of qualifying for the Tire Kingdom Winternationals.

Edwards, driving the Penhall/Interstate Batteries/Young Life/ART Pontiac GXP, defeated Greg Anderson, Allen Johnson, and surprising first-time finalist Bob Yonke to claim his second victory in as many events this season. He also has the distinction of leading the quickest Pro Stock field in NHRA history but also that of being in position to win two national events in one weekend.

Ron Krisher spoiled Edwards' streak of qualifying quickest in every session and every elimination round this season with a 6.540-second pass late Saturday that landed him No. 2 in the order behind Edwards.

Edwards winced at the broken string but clearly had other priorities Saturday.

"Especially with conditions changing so much, it kind of put a little bit of pressure on us. You're qualifying. You're racing. It's the second round and you're qualifying," Edwards said. "You just try to go as far as you can and push it and see what happens."

What happened along the way was particularly disappointing for Rodger Brogdon, Krisher, and Anderson.

Brogdon ran career-best elapsed time and speed against Yonke with his 6.561-second, 210.77-mph quarterfinal run but lost on a holeshot by eight-thousandths of a second. Greg Stanfield followed with a holeshot victory over Krisher, who posted his career-best E.T. (6.555). In the next pairing, Anderson set a track-record 211.86 mph -- close to his early-day prediction that a Pro Stock driver would hit 212 mph this weekend. But he lost to Edwards, who used a 6.537-second E.T. to top his 6.569.

Yonke applied his 6.590/209.98 winning performance in the "Arizona Nationals semifinal" to qualify for the Gatornationals. He had been unqualified in his Pontiac GXP, 18th in the order, going into that round/session.

Edwards won with a 6.552-second blast at 211.16 to Yonke's 6.604/209.36.

The Pro Stock class has a year to sort out the situation at Firebird International Raceway, where drivers Gordie Rivera and Vinnie Deceglie overturned in separate qualifying accidents.

"I think we all know that there was something wrong with the track (at Phoenix)," Edwards said. "I'm not going to point fingers at anybody. It's over with. I hope it's behind us. We're not going back there this year."

The NHRA Tech Department mandated changes between the Phoenix and Gainesville races in an attempt to stabilize the Pro Stock cars. Edwards said they're rules and he will live by them.

"The changes they've made, we've all accepted them. If it's better for the class, that's good," he said.

Final round-by-round results from the weather-delayed 26th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, the second of 23 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series:

FRIDAY QUALIFYING -
HIGHT, SCHUMACHER, EDWARDS AND PIPPIN LEAD NHRA GATORS QUALIFYING

Robert Hight raced to the Funny Car lead Friday during a rain-shortened day of qualifying at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

Defending world champion Hight powered his Auto Club Ford Mustang to a Gainesville Raceway track-record performance of 4.060 seconds at 310.13 mph to move to the top of the 16-car qualifying order.

“A lot of guys went out there and [lost traction], but [crew chief] Jimmy Prock has got a good handle on this race car,” Hight said. “We were hurting it a little bit in Phoenix, so he decided to put a new fuel pump on it, and he was even second-guessing himself a little after we had the threatening weather and one run today. But he stuck with it, and as you can see, it ran 310. It was a flawless run. If we can get some more conditions tomorrow, maybe we can lower that a little bit because there’s a lot of other cars out there that can do that. An .06 is a great start, and it’s definitely going to stay in the top four, five.”

Tony Schumacher, Mike Edwards and Junior Pippin also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event. NHRA officials were forced to cancel one qualifying round due to persistent rains, which lasted until just past noon.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher also posted both ends of the track record in his U.S. Army dragster with a performance of 3.823 at 318.03 to pace Top Fuel qualifying.

“The track was fine, actually a lot better than what we just ran,” Schumacher said. “That was a good run, and it was fairly soft; just a nice, easy run down the racetrack. I’m kind of surprised the other cars didn’t do better. There’s probably a lot more track than they thought. It’s a good track, a good facility.”

Schumacher, a three-time winner of the historic event, still gets goosebumps when he pulls to the line for a run at The Swamp.

“This is a big race,” he said. “It’s like Indy and Pomona, the list of people who have won this one is amazing. People spend extra time and energy to win this one. I don’t know how we dig any deeper than we dig normally, but this is Gainesville. It’s an amazing place, an amazing crowd, a great track, and I just love winning this one. It’s a great trophy to put on your shelf.”

Edwards, who will face Greg Anderson tomorrow in the continuation of the weather-delayed Pro Stock eliminations from Phoenix, covered the distance in 6.610 at 208.97 in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to lead his category.

“We figured the track would be pretty good,” said defending world champ Edwards. “Of course, it rained most of the day, but when it did dry off, we had cloud cover all day, so we knew the track would be cool. So we thought the track would be pretty good, and it was.”

The Edwards-Anderson matchup will be one of four quarterfinal rounds left over from Phoenix that will be completed during tomorrow’s first qualifying session (noon). The semifinals will take place in the second qualifying round (2:45 p.m.). The two Phoenix finalists will then get an additional run tomorrow.

“[With Phoenix eliminations tomorrow], the focus does change,” Edwards said. “You’re doing two things at once. It’s different. You know, you’re qualifying but you’re also racing, so your mindset’s going to be a little different, that’s for sure. It’s going to be a little nerve-racking because if conditions change a lot, we’ll have to make a lot of changes to these cars, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Pippin led Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.959 at 190.14 on his PiranaZ Buell.

“We just threw a Hail Mary at it to be honest with you, and, by golly, she went on down the boulevard, so I guess we’ll throw more Hail Marys at her,” Pippin said. “For the first pass I’ve made since Pomona [in November], we’re really happy and surprised. It felt good. I short-shifted a couple of gears, so there’s more in it. We’ll come out tomorrow and see if we can’t get faster because I’m sure the .95 won’t stand up, but it’s the best start we’ve had.”

It is the first time Pippin has led his category since he joined the series in late 2007.

“For the last two years, we’ve really worked hard on it,” Pippin said. “We’ve had some little glitches here and there, but hopefully it’s all coming together now. It’s not because of lack of effort, I’ll tell you that.”

dsb_0007_20100311_1757141915

Persistent rain showers and a forecast for more showers and thunderstorms throughout the day forced NHRA officials to postpone Thursday’s scheduled racing at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals at historic Gainesville Raceway.

Weather permitting, racing will begin Friday at 8 a.m.  Friday’s Full Throttle Drag Racing Series qualifying sessions are scheduled for noon and 2:45 p.m. Saturday’s two qualifying sessions also are set for noon and 2:45 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations begin at 11 a.m.

Among the highlights of the weekend include the completion of three rounds of Pro Stock eliminations from the weather-delayed Phoenix event; NASCAR champ Kurt Busch’s NHRA debut in the ultra-competitive Super Gas category in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series; the debut of NHRA’s newest touring series, the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series; the first race of the 2010 season for the Pro Stock Motorcycle category; and plenty of exciting racing in the NHRA’s marquee Full Throttle Series as points leaders Cory McClenathan (Top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car), and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) race to build on their championship point leads.
