2009 NHRA SUPERNATIONALS - SAME DAY COVERAGE
One of NHRA’s original seven national events, this race is steeped in legend: a historic facility, some of the sport’s most knowledgeable (and definitely most boisterous) fans.
SUNDAY FINAL - PEDREGON GRABS SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN OF THE SEASON; DIXON, COUGHLIN, TREBLE ALSO GRAB ADDITIONAL WINS IN ENGLISHTOWN
Tony Pedregon picked up his second consecutive win of the season in
Funny Car at the 40th annual United Association NHRA SuperNationals at
Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Larry Dixon picked up his fifth win in Englishtown, while Jeg Coughlin and Craig Treble also win in their respective categories.
Pedregon powered his Q Horsepower Chevy Impala SS to a 4.246-second run
at 260.56 to grab the win. It’s Pedregon’s second consecutive win of
the season, 42nd of his career and second win in Englishtown. Pedregon
also moved past points leader Ron Capps to take the top spot in the
Funny Car points standings with the win.
“I never thought I’d be afraid of a girl,” said Pedregon, who faced
Ashley Force Hood in the final round. “Fear of losing was in the back
of my head. I knew we had a good race car. It ran good in the heat, and
it ran good with cloud cover. Before the final, I just knew that Dickie
[Venebles, crew chief] was making a lot of adjustments and I had a
feeling it would be a close race. I heard her for a while. My car was
revving up, spinning the tires. We got after it because we had to. I
could feel the G’s falling off, and I was worried. If the track was
1,320 feet, I’d be in big trouble. I didn’t get off throttle. I just
hung on. It was just enough. You don’t know how relieved I was to see
that win light.”
NHRA legend John Force moved into the seventh spot with his
second-round appearance while rookie driver Matt Hagan dropped from
seventh to 10th in the point standings with his first-round loss.
In
Top Fuel, Dixon drove his Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Racing dragster past
current points leader Antron Brown to grab his third win of the season.
Dixon’s run of 4.553 seconds was enough to give him his fifth win at
Englishtown and 46th of his career.
“We’ve had a lot of success at this race,” said Dixon. “The race used
to be Father’s Day at Columbus, and we won out until they moved the
Father’s Day to here. I was like, ‘Wow, I haven’t won Englishtown in a
long time. It would be cool to do that,’ nonchalantly saying that at
the beginning of the season. And then all of a sudden, you get to go to
a bunch of finals and win here. This is a great track, and there’s so
much history here. Racing on the same track as ‘Jungle’ and Garlits and
Shirley and all my heroes that I grew up watching race is a great deal.”
With the win, Dixon was able to move past Top Fuel pilot Brandon
Bernstein and take over the third spot, just 97 points behind leader
Brown.
Defending Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin drove his JEGS.com
Chevy Cobalt to a 6.598 at 209.49 past runner-up Mike Edwards to grab
his fifth win of the season and second consecutive win of 2009. It also
gave the four-time world champ his third win in Englishtown and 45th of
his career.
“It’s
taken some craftiness on our part,” said Coughlin, of his two wins over
Edwards, who had the better performing car in both instances. “In the
pits, the guys have been doing a fantastic job. We qualified eighth,
which was not where we wanted to be, but when the weather mixed up
Saturday, we just wanted to make sure that we got down the racetrack.
Ideally, we wanted to be in the top eight for lane choice first round,
and we finished eighth. We knew we had a lot to work with. We figured
we could get within a hundredth and a half or two-hundredths of Mike
Edwards and could probably pace with anybody else out there, and as it
turned out, that’s about the way it turned out.”
In Pro Stock Motorcycle Craig Treble drove his Honda of Kingston Suzuki
to a 6.955 at 193.10 past defending world champion Eddie Krawiec and
picked up his second win of the season, 14th of his career and second
at Englishtown.
“This track loves me, and I love it,” said Treble. “I don’t know what
it is but I really like it here. The guys like Matt Smith and Eddie
[Krawiec] that went 6.90 were out of my league. I did not have a .90 in
my bike. Of course, I don’t feel bad about the final because Eddie
whipped my butt the last time we raced. I owed that to him. I was doing
okay on the starting line, but I just let it fly in the final and went
.007. I should have done that other three rounds, but it worked. I’m
looking forward to the west coast swing now. I’ve got a major engine
overhaul coming up after Norwalk, and I can afford it now.”
With the win, Treble moved from sixth to fourth in the Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings.

SATURDAY QUALIFYING - FORCE HOOD AND SCHUMACHER HOLD ON THE TOP SPOTS; KRISHER AND ARANA TAKE NO. 1’S AT RAIN SHORTENED SUPERNATIONALS
Ashley Force Hood held on to the No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car as rain ended qualifying early at the 40th annual United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
Tony Schumacher also kept the top position in Top Fuel while Ron Krisher and Hector Arana were able to move in to the top spots in their respective categories before rain showers hit at the 11th of 24 events on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Force Hood continued her No. 1 qualifier success, as her Friday pass of 4.071-seconds at 303.37 mph in her Castrol GTX Ford Mustang stay strong to give Force Hood her fourth No. 1 qualifier in the past six races.
“Thankfully, all three of our runs were good runs,” said Force Hood, who clocked a 4.202 on Saturday’s run. “We’ll take any of our qualifying runs on race day. We would have liked to have gotten a fourth run, but we are just as content to go into race day with three runs. We’ll see what we can do here at Englishtown tomorrow.”
Current points leader Ron Capps starts 10th in the field while defending event winner Tim Wilkerson will start seventh.
In Top Fuel, Schumacher’s Friday run in his U.S. Army dragster of 3.818 at 314.46 stayed strong to give the driver his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and 57th of his career.
“We’re certainly happy to have our first No. 1 of the year, especially considering we have a first-round bye,” said Schumacher. “We can always use the free 20 points whenever we can get them.”
Four-time Englishtown winner Larry Dixon took the second spot heading into Sunday’s eliminations while points leader Antron Brown took the fifth spot.
Ron Krisher took advantage of the cool weather on shortened session and grabbed the No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock. Krisher drove his Valvoline Chevy Cobalt to a 6.583 at 209.30. It’s Krisher’s first No. 1 qualifier of the season and 15th of his career.
"We’ve got the same motor we’ve had in all year; we’ve just been having trouble with the car and the clutch,” said Krisher. “But we learned a lot of things this weekend. We knew what we were looking at, and we knew what we had to do to fix it, and when we went out this morning, it was fixed. We were picking it up on every run, but Allen [Johnson] snuck past us last night.”
Current points leader and defending world champion Jeg Coughlin took the 8th spot while defending event winner Greg Anderson will start the race in the third spot.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle Hector Arana was able to move past Craig Treble and take the top spot. Arana drove his Lucas Oil Buell to a 6.965 at 189.87 to pick up his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and only second in his 165-race career.
“This is the first time in a long time that I’ve been No. 1 and it feels pretty good,” said Arana. “I’ve been close a couple of times but someone, usually Matt Smith, comes along and knocks me down at the last minute. I did my rain dance so nobody got that chance today. Seriously, I think we were going to be okay even if we had run because that 6.96 was pretty good.”
Sunday’s eliminations begin at 11 a.m.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - SCHUMACHER SITS NO. 1 IN ENGLISHTOWN; FORCE HOOD, JOHNSON, TREBLE ALSO IN PROVISIONAL SPOTS AT OLD BRIDGE RACEWAY PARK
Tony Schumacher raced to the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the 40th annual United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
Ashley Force Hood, Allen Johnson and Craig Treble also took the provisional top spots in their respective categories at the 11th of 24 events on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Schumacher, the defending event winner, drove his U.S. Army dragster to a 3.818-second pass at 314.46 mph to become the provisional top qualifier in Top Fuel. If it stands it would be Schumacher’s first No. 1 qualifier of the season, 57th of his career and second at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
“The track is outstanding,” said Schumacher. “The track itself is a great surface, and you’ve got to watch the weather. When you know there are only 15 cars, which is something that very seldom happens at a race, and you know that No. 1 guy gets that bye, you have to go for it. I knew it was there.”
Current points leader Antron Brown sits fifth after the first day of qualifying, while four-time Englishtown winner Larry Dixon is second.
In Funny Car, Force Hood drove her Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to a 4.071 at 303.37 to take the provisional No. 1 spot. If it stands, it would be Force Hood’s fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season, seventh of her career and third in the past four races.
“We’re on a great roll, but as soon as you start to think about that or get a little cocky about it, it will go right out the window,” said Force Hood. “We’re trying not to think too far ahead. We know we have a really consistent car, and we go into every weekend just trying to do everything the same way. It really helps to have that sort of consistency, and it shows in the performance of the car.”
Current points leader Ron Capps is sitting in the 10th spot while defending event winner Tim Wilkerson is seventh after one day of qualifying.
Topeka winner and Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson took the provisional top spot in his category. Johnson drove his Mopar Dodge Stratus to a 6.607 at 208.23 and looks to collect his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and seventh of his career.
“(Mike Edwards) is just basically the person who made us do that run,” said Johnson. “He’s just beating everybody right now, and we just decided to roll the dice and really get aggressive with our set-up on that good track, and it worked.”
Current points leader and defending world champion Jeg Coughlin sits the 11th spot, while defending event winner Greg Anderson is in the fifth position.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, 2007 Englishtown winner Craig Treble took the provisional No. 1 spot. Treble drove his Team Scream Suzuki to a 7.008 at 190.43. If it stands, it would be Treble’s first No. 1 qualifier of the season and fourth of his career.
“The conditions got a lot better, so I leaned it out and tightened the clutch,” said Treble. “We made a nice clean run, and it ran a good number. We’ve got a good barometer here and that certainly helps the Suzukis. Any time we race at the sea level tracks it’s usually good for us.”
Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at Noon and 3 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations begin at 11 a.m.

WEDNESDAY EVENT PREVIEW -TASCA LOOKS FOR SUCCESS AT HOME TRACK ON NHRA FULL THROTTLE TOUR
Bob Tasca’s mail is delivered to his home in Rhode Island, but he can
think of no better place to haul the mail than the track that he considers his home away from home, just a short blast down I-95 in New Jersey.
Tasca has been going to races at venerable Old Bridge Township Raceway Park all of his life.
He watched his grandfather race there. It’s where he was bit by the
drag racing bug himself and the place where he won his very first NHRA
national event – in Top Alcohol Funny Car during his sportsman racing
days.
Now he is focused on earning his first professional victory there, and
second overall, June 11-14 at the United Association NHRA
SuperNationals. Tony Schumacher, Tim Wilkerson, Greg Anderson and Chip
Ellis are the defending winners in their respective categories at the
NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event, which will be televised by
ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD.
Tasca, a sophomore in NHRA Funny Car competition, raced to his first
career victory earlier this season at the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals
at Gainesville Raceway in Flordia. It was an emotional scene as he
celebrated with is Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Ford Mustang crew. If
he’s able to win at Englishtown, the celebration would be off the
charts.
“The
history at Englishtown is almost unparalleled,” Tasca said. “It’s my
home track. There are so many fans from Rhode Island and neighboring
areas that come down and watch us race. It’s pretty historic for me
only because it’s a track that my grandfather performed very well at
and had countless match races over the years. There are magic moments
in everyone’s life and for me, one of the greatest magic moments was
Englishtown when I won that first national event in my alcohol funny
car and my entire family was there. I really think it played a big
role in me getting my (Funny Car) sponsorship with Motorcraft and Quick
Lane. The Ford executives were there, they saw the crowds, the passion
and then they saw us win. It’s a place where if we raced 24 times
there, it wouldn’t bother me a bit. I’m looking to get a win in the
fuel car in front of the home crowd and the Motorcraft Racing
Experience will be there. In case you didn’t know, I’m real excited
about Englishtown.”
Tasca, who struggled somewhat in his freshman season and finished
outside the top 10 in points, says winning at Gainesville in March
really set the stage for what he feels like this team is able to
accomplish. A partnership with Wilkerson where the two teams share data
and tuning information has also been extremely beneficial.
“I think it’s not what we learned (from winning at Gainesville), it’s
what we proved,” said Tasca, who is currently eighth in the Funny Car
point standings. “It’s what we proved to our sponsor, the fans, the
racers and ourselves that we are winners and that we have what it takes
to win. That to me was very important. It was important for me to
prove to my team that I could perform as a driver and I know it was so
important for them to prove to Ford and to our program that they can
deliver a race car that could win. We knew it. We believed it, but
proving it is everything. I don’t think the Gainesville win changed my
goals for the season. Our expectation is to win and it’s not to win one
race, but it’s to win multiple races. It is about putting ourselves in
a position to run for the championship. That was the goal going into
this year, to get in the top 10, stay in the top 10 and be a contender
to race for the championship. Nobody can guarantee a championship.
That’s pretty evident when you see the level of competition out there.
However, you want to guarantee yourself a chance to win a
championship. That was our goal coming into the season, winning hasn’t
deviated that at all, but it is about proving to the world that we
could win and getting that first win behind us is certainly a great
accomplishment in only our 27th race.”
With so much familiarity at Raceway Park, Tasca says that the key to
racing there is really all about team preparation, not in specific
challenges that the track itself presents.
“Englishtown can be really fast, but because the race takes place in
the middle of summer, it’s a hot race track,” Tasca said. “The key of
racing in Englishtown, I don’t think is any different than racing at
any other track. You have to go in with a race car that is
predictable. We have a Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang that is
very predictable, it’s better on a hot track than a cool track but it
goes A to B a lot and it goes A to B fast. At Bristol on a 121-degree
race track, we ran low ET on Saturday. Going into Englishtown, the key
to us will be us, not Englishtown. It will be how well we’re
prepared. It’s the decision-making processes that the crew chiefs go
through, it’s the driver performing. The key to win Englishtown is us.
We hold the key and how we manage the race will ultimately how well we
do.”
While Tasca will be focused on moving up in the points order, Ron Capps
has led the standings all season in his NAPA Dodge Charger and will be
looking for another win. Hard-charging Del Worsham posted back-to-back
victories in St. Louis and Bristol in his Al-Anabi Racing Toyota Solara
and is a two-time winner at Englishtown. Others to watch include
defending world champion Cruz Pedregon, a two-time winner at the track,
along with other past E-town winners Tony Pedregon, Tasca teammate
Wilkerson and John Force, a four-time winner.
Former bike racer and local favorite Antron Brown, a native of
Chesterfield, N.J. who now calls Indianapolis home, is having great
success in his transition to Top Fuel competition in his Matco Tools
dragster and is currently leading the point standings following a
runner-up finish at Chicago. Tony Schumacher continues to be tough to
beat in the 7,000 horsepower category as the six-time world champ is
winning races once again in his U.S. Army dragster, except this time
with a new crew chief, Mike Green, and a brand new crew. Other top
contenders include Brandon Bernstein, Cory McClenathan, Morgan Lucas
and Larry Dixon, a four-time winner at the historic dragstrip.
Jeg Coughlin, Jason Line, Mike Edwards and Greg Anderson are the
front-runners in Pro Stock, while defending series champ Eddie Krawiec,
Andrew Hines, Matt Smith and rookie Doug Horne are among the favorites
in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
