Written by Tracy Renck.

jones rickieGlen Gray, NHRA’s Vice President, Technical Operations, in an interview with Competition Plus Wednesday, addressed the fines levied against Pro Stock drivers Greg Anderson and Rickie Jones Tuesday following the Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Anderson was fined $5,000 and penalized 10 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series championship points for removal of safety equipment (lifting of helmet shield), which is prohibited from the time the vehicle leaves the starting line until the vehicle is on the return road as outlined in the 2013 NHRA Rulebook, Section 2, page 1.

“We found out about that with his in-car camera,” Gray said about Anderson lifting his helmet shield. “We look at video a lot of times and we noticed that the helmet shield was up during the run. Actually when we went back and looked it was up in three runs.”

Gray also said Anderson’s wasn’t being singled out for this infraction.

AJ RETURNS TO THE PLACE WHERE 2012 TITLE RUN BEGAN

allen johnson psPerhaps it was at Heartland Park Topeka last season when Allen Johnson first realized that winning an NHRA Pro Stock world championship title was in the realm of possibility for his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger team.

Johnson ran the table at that event, claiming the No. 1 qualifying position, earning nearly every bonus point available and then powering through eliminations to take the victory, dusting four-time world champ Greg Anderson in the final round.

COURTNEY READY TO GET BACK ON FAST TRACK

GNP GN2 4563Courtney Force could use a bit of the fast track action which propelled her early into the NHRA Funny Car points lead.

“I'm looking forward to the Topeka race in hopes of getting our Traxxas Ford Mustang back in the game,” said Force, who recently slipped to No. 6 in the NHRA point standings. “Our car performed well at this track last year throughout qualifying, but we got out-run by my own teammate and brother-in-law, Robert Hight. We’ve had a couple of rough weekends with rain delays, shortened qualifying days and just plain bad luck, so I’m excited to get back out there this weekend.”

Written by Susan Wade .

head chad2Not everybody is fascinated by concrete.

Funny Car racer Chad Head is.

He got that from his father, veteran Funny Car owner-driver Jim Head, whose Columbus, Ohio, construction company specializes in airfield concrete paving.

And the one thing Chad Head has come to realize is that concrete work is a lot like drag racing -- a person has to do it right the first time.

COMMENTARY: IT'S TIME FOR A DIVORCE

0730-03697Jim Hughes has it right.

In a recent interview with CompetitionPlus.com, the longtime sportsman sponsor and racer said what some NHRA officials would like to say but cannot for political reasons.

Hughes wonders if it isn't time to separate the professional and sportsman racers from competing at the same venue.

THE BAZEMORE FILES: MAY ADDITIONS

Written by Whit Bazemore.

bazemore leadMost drag racing fans who are familiar with my story, know that I worked as a photographer for many years before my own racing career finally got underway in 1986. Once I started racing, I put away my cameras and focused (pun intended) solely on my career. All of my past work was no longer important to me. But even though I no longer cared about my past, I did manage to lug around 11 big plastic bins of negatives and transparencies from the mid eighties all over the country. They've been stored in numerous storage units, moved from Atlanta to Indy back in 1994, stacked up in the not-so-dry 1932 era basement of my first house, and most recently, stored in the garage next to all of my and my family's cycling and ski equipment out here in Oregon. How I kept them, and why, I am not sure, but, boy, am I glad I did. I kept all of my camera equipment too, for the most part, although I did sell my 500mm lens to noted photographer and fellow Super Stock Magazine contributor Francis Butler after we had blown something up in the funny car in 1990. I last did a professional shoot (for WInston) in 1989 to raise some quick money when Gary Evans and I formed our own team, Bazemore Evans Racing. I next shot our car in 1996 for the cover of National Dragster. That was it until 2005 when my son Dashiell was born. In 15 years, I had picked up a camera exactly one time.

BERNSTEIN'S BACK BUT HIS BACK, NOT SO MUCH RIGHT NOW

Written by Susan Wade.

bernsteinBrandon Bernstein's Top Fuel runner-up finish at last weekend's Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway marked a high point this season for the ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Dragster team.

That he was able physically to go four rounds Saturday spoke volumes about his play-through-pain attitude.

NOBILE UPBEAT DESPITE DISAPPOINTING ATLANTA SHOWING

nobileThroughout his three-year career in the tough NHRA Pro Stock division, Vincent Nobile has consistently been able to avoid losing in the first round of eliminations. In 52-career starts, the NAPA/Mountain View Performance driver has failed to advance past the opening round just 13 times, including last weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals. Nobile was not able to make a good run in the NAPA/Mountain View Dodge Avenger during the rain-delayed event, and lost a frustrating round against Jason Line.

“There’s not much I can say except that right now, we’re missing something,” said Nobile. “The car is not running like it should be running and we just haven’t been able to figure out why. It’s been very frustrating but we know that we just need to keep on fighting and we’ll eventually find our way out of it. This is still a great team and even the great teams struggle from time to time. We’re gonna keep fighting.”
