WAITING ON THE ‘ICEMAN’

heath_jenkinsWith Pro Nitrous star Shannon Jenkins known as “The Iceman,” does that make his son, Heath, an “Ice Chip” off the old block?

That may not be the nickname the 25-year-old is looking for, but there’s no question Heath Jenkins wants to replicate his father’s on-track success. There’s only one major obstacle - his father.

“He’s definitely ready,” the former IHRA and NHRA Pro Mod world champion and multi-time ADRL race winner says of Heath’s aspirations. “I’m just not ready to stop driving yet.”

RACERS, FANS SUPPORT SMILE TRAIN TO THE TUNE OF $21,000

Smile Train was the biggest winner as Tony Pedregon and his wife Andrea’s special auction Saturday at Summit Motorsports Park raised an impressive $21,400 to help treat children suffering from cleft lip and palate.

Attracted by hard-to-get souvenir items and the chance to mingle with some of NHRA’s top drivers, about 200 generous fans bid for such prized possessions as NHRA drivers’ starting-line shirts, autographed driving gloves from NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson, a Taylor Swift autographed and framed CD, plus many other objects.

VIDEOS FROM THE OCIR

Dwight Guild has a video page to die for if you're a fan of the classic stuff. His countless videos focusing on racing at Orange County International Raceway in Southern California has not only some of the finest footage from January 1980 and 1981, but also great sound.

"I shot many many hours of "home movie" style drag race video, primarily from OCIR, 1979 thru 1983," wrote Guild on his Youtube.com channel. "I decided to break down the videos into individual runs, and load them up for racers, their families, fans, and friends to enjoy. Aside from shooting tons of video over the years, I also served as a crew member or crew chief on various cars, including several of Hayden Proffitt's. Props to Hayden, my racing mentor, and Al Amato, my video mentor."

GRUBNIC GETS EXTENSION TO RACE FULL SEASON

At the beginning of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Kalitta Motorsports’ Conrad “Connie” Kalitta, team owner and drag racing legend, announced that he was putting Dave Grubnic behind the wheel of his Kalitta Air Top Fuel dragster to compete in at least one half of the 23-event schedule. Kalitta announced today that Grubnic and the Kalitta Air team will continue to compete and vie for a coveted spot in the NHRA Top Fuel Countdown to 1.

After competing in the first 14 events this season, Grubnic and the Kalitta Air team find themselves in 11th place in Full Throttle Top Fuel championship points, a mere six points away from being in the top ten. Only the top ten in points are eligible for the NHRA’s version of “playoffs”, the Countdown to 1, which begins at the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in early September, leaving only four events on the schedule to garner points for drag racing’s “post season”.

AREND’S NEW FORMULA ONE CONNECTION

Jeff Arend is pretty proud of the safety equipment surrounding him when he straps into the Kalitta Motorsports DHL Funny Car. However, there’s one piece of equipment which is closest to his mind which makes him very comfortable.

When Arend says it’s on his mind, he means it literally.

Arend is just one of a few drivers using the Sparco Formula One-style helmet when he straps into his Funny Car.

KYLE CULTRERA’S INSPIRED NORWALK EXPERIENCE

sc_finalSportsman drag racer Kyle Cultrera believed winning was the only option for him as he competed in last weekend’s Super Comp competition at the NHRA Summit Nationals. The only issue for Cultrera; he’d never won a national event before.

He defeated John Taylor to score his first on Sunday afternoon.

Cultrera, the son of Jeg Coughlin Jr. crewman and past Modified/Competition eliminator ace Steve Cultrera, was en route from his shop in Elliot, Maine to the Norwalk, Ohio-based event when he received a phone call notifying him that friend/team co-owner Dave Macleod had lost his battle with prostate cancer.
