UPDATED: MILESTONES BROKEN IN FIRST ROUND "MINE SHAFT" BRAINERD

Imagine running a 3.703, 330 and getting blown away. JR Todd knows the feeling after his first round race versus Antron Brown.

Furthermore, imagine running a 3.90 for the world record in qualifying and losing it by .03 24 hours later. Jack Beckman can relate after watching Matt Hagan's first round win.

The first round of nitro racing at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals yielded the quickest runs ever in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car division.

After Larry Dixon laid down a strong 3.703 in the first pair, the strong elapsed time set the precedent for quick times ahead.

Brown left first against Todd, and never looked back en route to the first official 3.6-second pass and a 3.680, 331.12 package.

Beckman's car seemed to be on a monster run but lifted early with evident mechanical issues.

No one had an indication of what was forthcoming from Hagan.

Hagan, the first Funny Car driver to run in the three-second zone, was only ninth quickest (and slowest amongst threes) in a qualified field laden with three-second runs.

Hagan became the first Funny Car driver in the  3.8-second zone as he ran a 3.879 to beat Del Worsham.

UPDATED - Beckman backed up his 3.901 elapsed time from Saturday with a 3.903, all the while eliminating Hagan from competition.

Brown also backed up his first round run with a 3.696 elapsed time. However, Shawn Langdon lowered the provisional mark to a 3.662 elapsed time.

Matt Hagan is the new speed record holder with a 329.58 miles per hour.
