TAYLOR HEADLINES MWPMS SEASON-OPENER WINNERS

The Summit Racing Equipment Mid-West Pro Mod Series (MWPMS) kicked off the season in stellar fashion over the weekend. The event was highlighted by Pro Mod Icon Frankie “MadMan” Taylor taking the victory over the “Young Gun” Justin Jones.

Taylor faced a murderer's row of competition to reach the winner's circle by stopping Travis Brandt, Eddie Rogers, No. 1qualifier Aaron Wells before stopping Jones.

Taylor scored the victory with a 3.709 elapsed time at 202.55 miles per hour to repel Jones' 4.297 at only 140.09.

“Today was a huge victory for us. Not only because of the win itself but because of the special meaning the day has to us," Taylor said. "This victory was for Paul Jr.”

Jones for his part would defeat Cunningham, Sackuvich, and Haney on his way to the finals.

In the John Sears X275 division, defending series champion Shane Heckel defeated No. 1 qualifier Kenny Hubbel, 4.379 to 4.384.

The Mid-West Pro Modified Series also debuted new to the series in 2019, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman.

Wynette Hudgins was the inaugural Top Dragster champion, running a 3.885 on a 3.85 dial-in with a .008 light, to stop David Johns, who went dead on 4.137 on a 4.13 but had a .074 reaction.

In the Top Sportsman, Earl Folse laid down a 4.170 on a 4.11 (.016 reaction) to Bob Gulitti's 4.073 on a 4.00 (.020 reaction) to score the victory.

In the end, MWPMS founder Keith Haney was thrilled with the event.

“It isn’t often that you have such an extraordinary season opener anywhere in drag racing, but I feel like that is exactly what we managed to have in Ennis," Haney said. "The effort that the drivers, crew, MWPMS staff, and the fans put into the event was all top-notch,” stated series Founder Keith Haney.

The season opener in Ennis was set to contest four of the five MWPMS classes, and the action in all four was outstanding. This was also the first time during the regular season that both Top Sportsman and Top Dragster were going to be contested at a Mid-West Pro Mod Series event. Both of those classes showed up in full force, even though it is only March. In Pro Mod, some of the best drivers in the world came through the gates, with 17 cars on the property. And in X275 it was going to be two World Champions fighting it out in the final like a heavyweight boxing match.

The next stop on the Summit Racing Equipment Mid-West Pro Mod Series tour is in Bowling Green, KY as part of the Outlaw Street Car Reunion, April 11th-13th at Beech Bend Raceway Park.
