PEDREGON, LOGANO HAVE FUN BUT WILL STAY IN THEIR OWN LANES

 

 

For both NHRA Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Team Penske racer Joey Logano, Wednesday's "Snap-on Seat Swap" might not have been the most brave and dignified performance in a race car.

"I got that feel like you get on a roller coaster that you're going way too fast. I felt like that. My hands were flailing everywhere. I yelled and I screamed," Logano told reporters after the interactive show-and-tell at Charlotte Motor Speedway that had him sitting in Pedregon's 10,000-horsepower Snap-on Toyota Camry and racing a Mustang Cobra Jet on the zMAX Dragway quarter-mile.

"It was a little bit hairy for me. I was nervous," Pedregon confessed after his turn on the 1.5-mile quad oval next door to the dragstrip in an X-Finity Series car. "I was actually getting winded there after three or four laps."  

Neither is a one-trick pony in motorsports. Each has driven a variety of racing machines and demonstrated skill during the years at branching out to other styles. Pedregon even started by racing trucks and said Wednesday, "I really like any professional opportunity that allows me to get behind a wheel and put my racing expertise to the test. I had a lot of fun turning left for a day." But each indicated Wednesday that they thoroughly enjoyed a taste of the other's passion, they'd stick to their own form of racing.

"My initial reaction is 'These guys are crazy. I would never want to do that.' The motor's sitting in front of me. I've got a driveshaft going through my legs at 10,000 horsepower. I don’t want to do that. Like, that's insane," 2015 Daytona 500 winner Logano said, grinning equally from the thrill of the experience and the relief of surviving the danger.

Pedregon, meanwhile, relished the chance that their mutual sponsor Snap-on arranged but said, "There's nothing I love more than drag racing."

Once he caught his breath, Pedregon said, "Joey's got the skills and intuition that far exceed his years."

Logano told Competition Plus, "I think I could do it - just not sure if I would want to do it. It definitely takes a special type of person to do this type of racing. It takes a lot of concentration and skill. I'm not sure how good my skills would be on the tree, though. That would take some practice, for sure. But it's crazy how much those cars shake you to the core when you fire them up.  It’s a feeling unique to that sport for sure.

"I’ve been around drag cars a bunch of times, so I knew what to expect.  I’ve got to experience a lot of different types of cars," he said. "Running the Cobra Jet was pretty fun. The car has a lot of pickup and gets down the track fast. It really makes me respect what those guys do.  I can only imagine what it is like to do that behind the wheel of a Funny Car or a Top Fuel dragster. No matter what you are around and how much you've driven in your life, you don't realize how much power some of those things have. I love experiencing new things. It was a pretty awesome experience, for sure."

He said Pedregon, despite his extensive experience, would have a big learning curve if he ever decided to pursue NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing.

"Just like his sport, it would take dedication and practice to get good. It's not as easy as it looks. I'm sure he would tell me the same thing about drag racing. People who don't know think turning in circles is simple or driving in a straight line as fast as you can looks easy and that anyone could do it. But it’s not that easy," Logano said. "But like anything, to get good, you need to just be dedicated to making yourself better. He’s driven oval cars before, so it wouldn’t be totally new to him. He would totally have to learn a new craft and learn to be a little easier on the throttle, though."

The Snap-on Seat Swap gave both a chance to become more familiar with the nuts and bolts of other's work.

"Those of us who compete in a form of motorsports always wonder what it's like to drive another type of car," Logano said. "Hopefully, Cruz got that experience today. I know I did.

"I think it's cool anytime you can show off your sport to another driver and another fan base," Logano said. "Most of the time, drag racers are racing fans, and NASCAR drivers are drag racing fans. But to really go in depth with them and give them new experiences is what is really neat. That way, when they talk about our sport or we talk about theirs, we sound more informed."

 But Logano said he really doesn't have enough time in his schedule for an NHRA fling but solidified his interest in drag racing.

"I wouldn’t have the time to dedicate to trying to compete because I’m focused on winning races and the Cup Championship. But I would love to get to some races, for sure," he said. "I've been to several NHRA drag races and had the chance to stand on the starting line and feel the power those cars have. So to get a chance to take a couple of passes in the Cobra Jet was intense. I got to go to Charlotte a couple of years ago. I stood on the starting line and everything.  It was a blast.

"I'm always looking for races to go to because I’m a fan of the sport in general. IndyCar or drag racing or a local short track, I’ll go if I can find the time."

Pedregon will begin two days of qualifying for the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals Friday at zMAX Dragway.

Logano and his NASCAR crowd will be back on the track this weekend at Martinsville, Va., for the STP 500. But they'll race at Charlotte Motor Speedway May 15 in the Sprint Showdown, May 16 in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, and Memorial Day weekend in the Coca-Cola 600.
