MASON MCGAHA GOES BACK TO DRAG RACING SCHOOL; EARNS DRAGSTER LICENSE

Mason McGaha has proven he’s a solid NHRA Pro Stock driver in his brief career so far.

In 44 races, McGaha has 30 round wins and one runner-up finish at the 2021 Charlotte (N.C.) Four Wide race in the spring.

On Dec. 27-28, McGaha attended Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School in Gainesville, Fla.

Chris McGaha, a 1995 graduate of Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School, and winner of eight NHRA national Pro Stock events brought his son Mason, a current NHRA Pro Stock driver, and daughter Berkley, 17, to the school.

“I wanted to go to the school to drive a dragster,” said Mason, 21. “I really didn’t know what to expect but it was a lot of fun driving one.”

Mason received his Super Comp license and Berkley is nearing completion to get her Super Comp license.

“We are in the process of building a dragster,” Mason said about his family’s race operation based in Odessa, Texas. “We have a lot of parts for the dragster. We just have not had time to finish it because we have been so busy with Pro Stock.”

The plan is to finish the family dragster sooner than later and Mason said if he does any driving in the dragster it would likely be at their hometown track in Odessa.

“I will say I really enjoyed Frank Hawley’s Drag School,” Mason said. “I have always wanted to be able to race on my birthday and I was able to do that this year at the school because I turned 21. It was really cool to get to race on my birthday, especially in a dragster.”

As for the upcoming season, Mason is ready for another go at it in Pro Stock.

“We are going to keep racing Pro Stock as long as they let us and the class is still around,” Mason said. “We had a decent start to the first part of the (2022) season and then things didn’t go well for us in the second part of the season. We have worked on a lot of things over the winter and I’m excited for the new season. I know our luck has to start turning around.”

Mason was sixth in the points after the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals on July 31 in Seattle. Unfortunately, by season’s end, he dropped to 11th in the points standings.

“I know we can turn things around,” Mason said.

The NHRA national event season begins March 9-12 with the Amalie Motor Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville.
