BO BUTNER TO RACE SUPER COMP IN CHICAGO

Pro Stock points leader Bo Butner has four wins in the first five events, and in the Sportsman ranks, the driver of the Summit Racing Cobra Jet Mustang has reached the final in each of the most recent two SAM Tech Factory Stock Showdown races. Why not try something completely different in the middle of an already successful season, right? 

This weekend, Butner will be behind the wheel of his steady Jim Butner Auto Group Chevrolet Camaro in Pro Stock, and he'll also be racing alongside his Sportsman friends in Super Comp. Butner has never raced Super Comp at the national event level, but he'll be targeting 8.90 at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. 

"Between Randi Lyn [Shipp, fiancée] and Tyler Bohannon, who works with me at the dealership, the idea came up," said Butner. "It's his car. What's funny about it is his grandpa and his father kind of got me started in drag racing because I bought my first real bracket car from them. Anyhow, Tyler and Randi Lyn were just joking about it, and Randi Lyn said, 'I'll just enter Bo and he'll do it.' That's pretty much what happened. But I can't wait. It's something different and something new."

Butner isn't completely new to the category; he has raced Super Comp at the divisional level before, and he bracket raced a dragster a handful of times at Ohio Valley Dragway, the facility closest to his home base in Floyd's Knobs, Ind. 

Over the course of a very productive racing career, Butner's 26 national event wins have been stretched across five categories. He has national event trophies in Pro Stock, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, and Super Street.

With this weekend's Super Comp entry and several races left to compete in the Factory Stock Showdown this season, the diverse driver has the potential to close in on Jeg Coughlin Jr., the only driver in NHRA history to own national event wins in seven different categories. Coughlin has claimed trophies in Pro Stock, Top Dragster, Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, and Super Gas. 

"That's a cool record to own, and of course Jeg is one of the best – if not THE best," said Butner. "But this is just to go out and have fun with the Bohannon family, and to do something with the Sportsman guys. I miss that. 

"A lot of them are telling me I picked the most difficult one with every tough racer in the country going there. It's not an easy class at all. It takes a lot of luck and you have to be in the right place at the right time, but I seem to be on a pretty lucky streak. We'll see what happens."
