DAVID POOLE PASSES

Veteran Motorsports writer David Poole died today of an apparent heart attack.

Poole, who wrote for the Charlotte Observer among other publications, was mostly known for his NASCAR reports but often ventured into the drag racing world. He wrote drag racing articles for publications previously only reserved for NASCAR.

Tommy Johnson Sr., who lived in the Charlotte, N.C. area considered Poole a friend.

"David didn't worry about being "politically correct" he TOLD it like it was," Johnson said. "I will forever respect him for that."

The introduction of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing into the Charlotte arena enabled Poole to introduce drag racing to the NASCAR world. NHRA President Tom Compton said this loss robs the motorsports world of a reporter who carried influence with his reports.

“The motorsports world lost one of its most definitive and influential reporters with the passing of David Poole this morning,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA.  “He was a true friend to the sport of NHRA and NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing, and his interest grew exponentially when we announced we were bringing our series to the Charlotte area.

“Personally, I enjoyed his colorful personality and how passionate he was about our sport and particularly our drivers. On behalf of everyone at NHRA, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time.”

Poole was 50.
