John Palmer Higgins, who was known as Jay Higgins in the drag racing community, was sentenced on one count of first-degree assault.

According to newspaper reports, Higgins pulled a gun on a woman on Aug. 17, 2008 after hitting her side mirror while attempting to turn his recreational vehicle. The driver of the silver Infiniti approached the Higgins vehicle to discuss the damages when he pulled a gun on her.

Higgins had a prior conviction of conspiracy to distribute cocaine in North Carolina, and was forbidden to carry a gun, according to Assistant States Attorney Claude de Vastey Jones. Since his arrest in Columbia according to the Columbia Flier (Md.) newspaper, Higgins also has been charged in North Carolina with assault by pointing a gun and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Wayne Kirwan, a spokesman for the Howard County State’s Attorney.
