STRASBURG’S STEADY RACING

Steady wins the race.

At least that’s how veteran independent Top Fuel racer Mike Strasburg sees it.

Strasburg, 50, of Lehi, Utah, drives the B&J Transmissions dragster, a car sponsored by his company, on the NHRA circuit.

Strasburg is currently tied for twelfth in the points, a tally that could be higher if work demands didn’t force him to exit Pomona eliminations prior to Tuesday’s NHRA Winternationals completion. As it turned out his scheduled opponent Antron Brown smoked the tires and popped the blower coasting to a pedestrian elapsed time. Independent Top Fuel Team Challenges the Big Teams

Had Strasburg been in competition, he might have been prepared for an opportunity to win the race.

“We just run our own race,” Strasburg admits. “Just hope they make a mistake and while we don’t try to run with them, we at least try to run close to them. If they try to run faster they have a better chance of smoking the tires. Hopefully we’ll be right there if that happens.”

Strasburg made the transition from Top Alcohol Dragster to Top Fuel in 2002 after six successful seasons in the sportsman division. His last season in sportsman racing, he battled Brandon Bernstein down to the wire for the NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Dragster title.

“If they get low elapsed time and the win, then they deserve it. We just move on,” Strasburg added.

Strasburg plans to run 10 – 12 races during the 2009 season and admits he’d love to run more if the budget allowed.

He’ll likely run all of the west coast races and the jury is still out if he’ll run the NHRA Nationals in Topeka, Ks.
