That’s the hard lesson AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) Pro Modified champion Greg Krenik has found out.

Krenik has been taken out of contention for the 2009 season before it even began. He’s not completely out of racing but a limited schedule makes a successful championship defense all but impossible.

“It’s such a shame too, just after we got the bike ready for the season,” Krenik said. “We did a couple things to the motor and a couple more to the chassis and the goal was to run an 8.299 at one of the tracks this season.

“Last Friday, during my performance review it came down to a choice … work or racing … and after being involved in land development as a civil engineer for 16 years at Mark Goodwin & Associates, I need to help Mark stay afloat in this economic crisis,” Krenic explained. “No more time off without pay. Mark has supported my racing habit for the last 6 years and I am very grateful, therefore, I need to support him when he needs me.”

Adding to the complexity of his decision is Greg’s wife’s Karen, a staff member of the AHDRA, who had recently been assigned to the overwhelming roles of serving as managing editor of the house publication as well as ad sales, contingency and procuring other sponsors, has resigned her post.

Karen had joined the staff at the AHDRA in order to work alongside her husband.

“It sure has been fun and I am really sad to have to let the racers and the AHDRA down,” she said via email. “But, this was a team deal (Greg and I) and I will say ‘Goodbye’ also.”

The team has plans to compete at Woodburn, Ore., Rockingham, N.C., and local events close to their home in Albuquerque, N.M.
