CORNELIUS POLICE DEPARTMENT HELPS 'PUT ON THE B.R.A.K.E.S.'

The Cornelius Police Department, which has supported Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. organization since it was founded, is now aiding the charity in its mission of promoting safe and responsible driving by putting a B.R.A.K.E.S. license plate on each of its patrol cars.

“By putting the license plates on their cars, the Cornelius Police Department is helping us remind teens to drive safely and we are grateful for their support,” said Doug Herbert, NHRA drag racer and founder of B.R.A.K.E.S.  “When teens are on the road and they see a B.R.A.K.E.S. license plate, window decal or bumper sticker, they are reminded of the consequences that can result from unsafe driving.” The Cornelius Police Department, which has supported Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. organization since it was founded, is now aiding the charity in its mission of promoting safe and responsible driving by putting a B.R.A.K.E.S. license plate on each of its patrol cars.

Officers of the Cornelius PD have a personal connection to B.R.A.K.E.S. because several of them responded to the tragic wreck that spurred the creation of the organization.  The car accident that killed Herbert’s two sons, Jon, 17, and James, 12, occurred on Jetton Rd., only minutes from both the police station and Herbert’s home.

“The tragedy that created this intervention program had a profound effect on everyone involved, and left us all with a sense that we have to figure out a way to do something to prevent it from happening again,” said Police Chief Bence Hoyle.  “As Doug Herbert responded to his grief with direct action by forming B.R.A.K.E.S., I had the privilege of witnessing his absolute determination to influence the decisions our young drivers make, the result of which has surely saved many of their lives.”

B.R.A.K.E.S., which was recently honored by the North Carolina Motorsports Association with the NCMA award for Safety Innovation, is currently working to take its Teen Pro-Active Driving School nationwide in 2009.  Dates and locations for the school, which provides teenagers with hands-on training for how to prevent an accident, will be announced soon.

“There are many public programs that deal with teen driving,” said Hoyle.  “However, B.R.A.K.E.S., and its driving school, strike directly at intervention by not only making our kids think, but by teaching them hands-on skills that will help them survive behind the wheel.”

Herbert added, “One of our most important goals is to keep safe and responsible driving at the front of teenager’s minds when they’re actually on the road.  It’s easier for them to make smart decisions when they’re focused, but when they get in the car they can be very distracted, with texting, talking to friends or listening to the radio.  I encourage everyone to visit the B.R.A.K.E.S. website at www.putonthebrakes.com, where they can make a donation and receive a license plate or a decal for their car.  Help us remind everyone on the road that they need to be safe and responsible drivers.”
