Drag racing icon “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and ADRL Promoter Kenny Nowling lead their respective opponents entering the final hours of first round voting.

Garlits carries a 19.90% percent share of the votes in his first round match against former Seattle International Raceway promoter Jim Rockstad.

Both stories are entertaining with Garlits spinning a yarn about former crewman T.C. Lemons and a discussion with a Canadian border agent regarding the “dead” elephant in the trailer. Rockstad tells an entertaining story about how Ed “Ace” McCulloch left a crewman on the side of the road by accident.

Nowling commandeers a 19.40% lead over Steve Reyes, one of the best photographers in drag racing history.

Just like the aforementioned pair, both storytellers tell a tale of interesting proportions with a great deal of humor interjected. Nowling tells from a promoter’s standpoint what happens when the national anthem singer collapses just moments before the singing and Reyes tells of a wheelstander who just can’t get the wheels in the air only to do so later in the day in his garage.

These pairings conclude the first round of eliminations.
