GOFORTHS COMMIT TO IHRA

“We’re going to focus 100-percent on our goal of finishing 1-2 in the 2009 IHRA Pro Stock points standings,” Cary said. “Dad and I talked about it and we really think this is the best fit for us. We will run other sanctioning bodies on non-conflicting weekends because there is no substitution for seat-time, but we’re going after the IHRA championship and running the full deal this year.”

Cary finished sixth in the 2008 championship points standings while his father Dean finished 10th. Both drivers joined the Jerry Haas 6.20’s Club at the 2008 IHRA World Finals in Rockingham…Dean becoming the sixth member with a 6.294 in his 2007 GTO and Cary closing out the club, becoming the eighth and final member with a 6.298 in his 2008 Cobalt. Cary will again be behind the wheel of his Cobalt while Dean just took delivery of a Jerry Haas 2009 GXP for the ’09 season.

With the rumors and speculation flying around about who would be racing where next season, Cary wanted to clear the air and leave no doubt where he and his father stood.

“IHRA is an older sanction, it has been around for a long time and has very solid roots,” he said. “In this economy there has not been one person, not a single soul, who has not felt the effect of what’s going on with the economy. IHRA has a new owner and we didn’t think it would be very fair to abandon the organization before we gave Mr. Feld and Feld Motor Sports every opportunity. Feld just took over and really hasn’t gotten started yet. It just made no sense for us to jump ship.”

“So we figured we’d stay and see where things lead. We know it might be a struggle this year because of the economy, but it’s going to be a struggle for everyone across the board. IHRA is our home and we wanted to do everything we could to help it survive and thrive.”

He also wanted to mention how much the rest of the IHRA racers mean to him.

“Mountain Motor Pro Stock is the most amazing class in the world as far as I’m concerned,” Goforth said. “There really is no comparison to it. And the guys in this class are great…really a tight-knit group. We help each other when we need it, hang out together and really would do anything for each other. That’s not something you can replace.”

Goforth is looking forward to some serious competition in 2009.

“You look at Richard Freeman bring three cars and bringing Frank Gugliotta on board, that’s a team that will have the best equipment and Frank will be a huge asset to them with his ability to make good decisions,” he said. “And Pete Berner has all the best stuff and is an amazing driver. We have the best stuff as well, we’ve just had to figure out how to race with the best stuff.”
