Wilkerson, the giant-killer Funny Car driver who finished second in the 2008 NHRA Funny Car chase, no longer has to introduce himself to the manufacturers.

“They already know who I am,” Wilkerson smiled, as he stood outside of the JE Pistons booth where his Funny Car was displayed.

They should considering Wilkerson amassed one of the more formidable championship efforts of 2008 with six national event victories, which equaled his career national event win mark plus one. A year earlier he finished the season ranked fifteenth.

“The season we had got us quite a few more invites to the show than we usually had in years past,” Wilkerson admitted. “There are some pretty elite cars and displays and to have ours in that group is pretty flattering.”

Wilkerson now faces a new challenge, making his way through the aisles of the Orlando Convention Center in a reasonable amount of time. That’s because he’s got a penchant for interacting with the fans.

Clearly Wilkerson may not have won the championship but he won the fans’ hearts over.

“I never would have dreamed that so many people would want to speak with me,” Wilkerson said proudly. “People are really gracious and from my point of view that is really great. I can barely make it down the aisle without someone grabbing me to tell me congratulations on the year. It’s been a good feeling.

“I can remember when I could walk down the line and no one would know who I was.”
