NITRO PRICE REDUCTION

CompetitionPlus.com has learned that NHRA's official nitro supplier VP Racing Fuels has effectively dropped the cost of a 400-pound of 100% nitromethane to $970 a drum. This represents a nearly $500 decrease in the price.

"Good news -- due to a dramatic reversal in the nitromethane market, the price of VP's nitro will be reduced," VP's Steve Burns said in a prepared statement issued to the various race teams.

The letter continued, "As you’re aware, nitromethane prices last year were subject to a perfect storm of market conditions in which every price pressure that could happen did happen and virtually all at the same time. By contrast, the market now is flooded with nitromethane, although much of it of such poor quality that we can’t use it.

"Per NHRA standards, VP only uses nitromethane of a minimum 99.5% purity. This is a standard most Chinese producers cannot meet. We know first-hand their capabilities and limitations based on our visits to their chemical plants. Chinese producers are currently offering nitromethane to us at varying prices, but we’re only able to accept product that meets the 99.5% standard—typically at the higher end of the current price spectrum. Nonetheless, sufficient quantities of this higher quality nitromethane are available to permit the price decrease."
