funny_car_fever.jpgFUNNY CAR FEVER: "THE BIRTH OF DRAG RACING'S WILDEST CLASS" BOOK  - $24.95

This amazing book recaptures nearly 400 of photographer Steve Reyes's favorite images, including incredible crash-'n'-burn sequences. Funny Car Fever combines famous, infamous and previously-unpublished photos, beginning with the first fuel Funny Car (Chrisman's Comet) and continuing through Kenny Bernstein's controversial Batmobile. Most pictures are printed in full color. In his individual captions and detailed chapter introductions, Reyes describes both on-track action and the extreme weirdness witnessed by a young photographer on tour in the wide-open 1960s and '70s -- from dangerous racer pranks to a nude photo shoot of Jungle Pam (not pictured!). This 192-page package is printed on premium-quality paper and bound by heavyweight soft covers. (9X9")

PART THREE: LIONS, THE GREATEST DRAG STRIP DVD (1966 - 72) - $29.95

LIONS_3.jpgBetter grab the Kleenex box before you sit down with this one. Prepare to shed some tears of joy and laughter as "The Beach" hits it peak with early Funny Car meets (introduced with circus music!) and the all-digger PDA Meet before crying crocodile tears of regret as noise complaints silence the drag strip that Mickey Thompson and C.J. Hart built. You won't be the only one bawling: Even mucho-macho interview subjects get teary-eyed for Don Gillespie's video camera as they're reminded of friends, fun and tragedies of Saturday nights from mid-1966 right through 1972's Last Drag Race. Among the surprises in-between is the first film footage we've ever seen of the 1970 transmission explosion that severed Big Daddy's foot (courtesy of a fan in the stands). The Old Man, who remained conscious throughout the accident, describes it in detail. Next comes Garlits's near-triumphant return to The Beach, exactly one year later, with the revolutionary back-motored car that went to the final round in its competition debut. Others interviewed include Iskenderian, Ronda, Maverick, McEwen, Leong, Ivo, Finders, Muravez/Lippencott, starter Larry Sutton and reporter Ralph Guldahl, along with some who have since "pulled the 'chute": Sush Matsubara, Pat Foster, C.J. Hart, Willie Borsch. Saddest of all, this is the final volume of a nearly-six-hour series that sets a new standard for drag-strip documentaries.

OLD FUNNY CARS AND FORCE - DVD - $26.00

old_funnys_n_force_lg.jpgThe Jackson Bros captured, on film, many of the greatest Funny Car racers of all time, at Fremont Raceway, in the early to late 70's. The J Bros shot with a Nikon Super 8 film camera that had a great Slow Motion feature built in, and they used it on many a burnout and launch of those Nitro powered Hot Rods. Tire shake and body flex were just as BAD then as it is now, and is plainly evident in this great, rare glimpse at some of the wildest, greatest Funny Cars that ever traveled the 1320. Here's a partial list of the racers included in this program: John Force, Don Prudhomme, Jungle Jim, Ed McCulloch, Tommy Ivo, Don Schumacher, Tom McEwen, Roland Leong, Tom Hoover, Connie Kalitta, Shirley Muldowney, Jungle Pam, Linda Vaughn, Pisano-Matsabura, I'll John Lombardo, Jim Dunn, Pat Minnick, Gary Densham, John Mazmanian, Steve Leach, Billy Meyer, Kenny Goodell, Jerry Ruth, Danny Ongias, Ron Colson, Dale Pulde, Condit Bros, Jim Terry, Pandemonium, John Hovan, Gene Snow, Henry Harrison and many more.

YORK U.S. 30 BACK IN THE DAY DVD - $19.95

york.jpg1960s Doorslammer fans, this one's for you! Pennsylvania has always been a hotbed of hot "stockers," as documented by home-boy Jim Amos in a DVD that delivers near-nonstop action. Happily, some of Jim's film contributors followed their local heroes to Indianapolis. Besides color action and live sounds from York U.S. 30 Dragway (including the infamous '65 Super Stock Nationals), we get bonus footage from at least four editions of Indy's Big Go ('61-64) -- much of it shot from IRP's starting line and staging lanes. The rapid evolution of Detroit iron from warmed-over 409s and 406s and 413s into purpose-built "factory race cars" unfolds before your eyes. If you've never heard the original Grumpy's Toy Camaro wind up prior to launch, here's a unique opportunity to listen to Bill Jenkins's personal rat motor sing its song! Among other historic subjects, this amazing DVD brings back Linda Vaughn (often!), Chrysler's '65 AWB cars, other A/FXers, early floppers, the "Filthy '40", "Jungle" Jim Liberman's Novas, etc.! Recent interview subjects who fondly reflect upon York U.S. 30 include Jenkins, Tom Hoover, Bill Stiles, Jere Stahl and George Weiler.

FUEL ALTEREDS FOREVER BOOK - $24.95

fuel_altereds.jpgBlown, nitro-burning altereds remain the hottest hot rods of all time; also the scariest, by far! In his own words and 250-plus pictures, International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame member Steve Reyes illustrates the evolution of coupes, sedans and roadsters from crude contraptions of the 1950s into five-second AA/Fuel Altereds of the 1980s. Reyes toured the nation for a quarter of a century, shooting national events and outlaw match races and everything in between. More than 250 personal-favorite color and B&W images of altered coupes, roadsters and sedans reveal why history's hottest hot rods will never be forgotten -- nor equaled for ill-handling excitement! All the heroes are here: Pure Hell, Pure Heaven, Winged Express, Magnificent 7, Nanook, The Mob, Instant T, Warlock, Rat Trap, Rat Poison, Beaver Hunter, Groundshaker Jr., Blue Blazer, Magic Muffler, Texas Ranger, Panic, etc. Willie Borsch gets special treatment and extra photos. Reyes wraps things up with a bonus section featuring the AA/Funny Cars of several heroes who defected to the hated "late-model fuel altereds" (including "Wild Willie" hisself, unsuccessfully transformed into "Revell's Wild Man"). Whew, what a package! This 194-page, 9x9" book is printed on premium paper and bound by heavyweight soft covers with folded end flaps, front and back.

funnycareastlarge.jpgFUNNY CAR MATCH RACING EAST BOOK  - $24.95

The 3rd book from John Shapiro, Funny Car Matching Racing East is a unique look at the fuel floppers that roamed the Eastern, Midwest and Southern tracks during the late '60s and '70s. These “self sponsored” asphalt gypsies did it for love, going from track to track, three and maybe four times a week. If you remember: The Trojan Horse, the Chi-Town Hustler, the Eastern Raider, the Damn Yankee, the Super Duster, Color Me Gone, Mr. Norm, Jungle Jim Liberman, the Frantic Ford or the Flying Dutchman, then you were there watching a Funny Car Match Race somewhere East of the Mississippi. And... if you remember the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars that made a stop at a track near you, there's a complete a special color chapter devoted to those burgeoning Funny Car Stars from ‘69 to ‘76.

SLINGSHOT SPECTACULAR: THE FRONT-ENGINE DRAGSTER ERA - $24.95

slingshots.jpgMore than 350 of his favorite color and B&W photos illustrate Steve Reyes's personal stories about that most American of race cars: the slingshot fuel dragster. What makes Steve's history book unique is his inside role as a photographer of these front-motored fuelers from 1963 through 1971 (when their extinction was accelerated by slingshot-superstar Don Garlits's introduction of a safer, saner chassis configuration). What makes the book truly special is its combination of Reyes's incomparable film and vivid recollections of the Kings Of The Sport during drag racingÕs "Golden Age." Who knew that this International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame photographer could write so well? ("Not me!" Steve has said of his late-blooming journalistic talent.) In the process of artfully documenting the development of diggers, Reyes inserts enough babes, bombs and bummers to fill up a whole 'nother book. Magazine editors of the '60s and '70s were real suckers for hot pants, halter tops and go-go boots, and this fulltime freelancer prints the outtakes to prove it. The dangers that drivers risked are documented in frightening detail by some of the sport's most-famous crash-'n'-burn photos. Mug shots of hero racers -- many since deceased -- and Steve's fellow photographers add personality to the mix. A series of front pages from long-defunct Drag World is strategically placed to provide historical perspective. Yes, we loved all 192 pages! So will you. (9x9", softbound)

seven_second_love.jpgTHE SEVEN SECOND LOVE AFFAIR - DVD - $29.95

Lions Drag Strip at the peak of drag racing's "Golden Age" is the backdrop for this legendary Robert Abel documentary about the record-holding Adams, Wayre & Stewart Top Fuel team's trials and tribulations in 1965. Never released to theatres and previously unavailable on video (except as poor-quality bootlegs), this DVD was made from a master print by Les Blank, the original cinematographer. Thus, the picture & sound are top-notch — including multiple-camera footage of Rick Stewart's wicked tumble through the shutdown area at Lions. Professional narration is complemented by terrific music from the little-known Canned Heat Blues Band. Director Abel (who went on to pioneer computerized animation & special effects in feature films) follows Stewart — now NHRA's chief starter — to the Bakersfield hospital where he worked as an X-ray technician, & eavesdrops on Gene Adams as he prepares a couple of early Chryslers inside the simple garage that served as this famous team's race shop. Towing footage from the just-completed, uncrowded San Diego Freeway (I-405) is an unexpected treat, four decades later, as are flashes of Lions operators C.J. & Peggy Hart in action. This is one racing video that captures race fans & newcomers alike!
