Wilmes qualified No. 2 in a marathon 32-car field by defeating Allen Bessant, Randy Walker, Tim Henry and John Mihovetz to reach the finals against Vinny Demieri.

Due to the late hours caused by an inordinate amount of oildowns and rapidly deteriorating track conditions, race officials shortened the event to eighth-mile and Wilmes posted a winning 4.092, which easily outdistanced the 4.253 from Demieri.

Low qualifier Mike Moran fell in the second round of competition to No. 17 qualifier Brian Lane.

The only person who kept the Vegas event from becoming a total anihialation at the hands of the second-generation Glidden was Spiro Pappas, who snatched the No. 1 qualifying honors away during the final session.

Glidden, of Whiteland, Ind., didn't seem fazed as he methodically worked his way past Chris Storlie, Rick Snavely, Dennie Sugruve and Mike Murillo before topping Rich Zehring in the finals.

A special note, ten-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Bob Glidden lasted until the Outlaw Street quarter-finals when he lost to Murillo. Glidden was driving Kenny Perry's Pontiac Grand Am.
