The newly crowned AMA champion, McBride laid down a first-round 5.92 enroute to facing number one qualifier (5.98) Kory Hogan in the final round.
The race itself was anticlimactic as Hogan lit the red bulb and had problems on the run, but McBride's run was anything but that. McBride streaked to an unbelievable 5.746 at 239.82 mph to lower the all time Top Fuel standard.
McBride did not have a backup run for the official record, so his 5.79 from an earlier event at South Georgia Motorsports Park is still the official AMA Dragbike standard.
