Daniels Scores Maple Grove Win; Westcott Jr. Claims 2008 Mopar®HEMI® Challenge Points Title
Jim Daniels, of Bristol, Pa., scored an emotional and popular first career Mopar® HEMI® Challenge victory in the Pennsylvania Dutch Classic at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa. on Friday, Oct. 24. Daniels, driving his 1968 Dodge Dart, bested Jim Pancake, of Delaware, Ohio, in a battle of the red lights as both drivers fouled. Jim Daniels, of Bristol, Pa., scored an emotional and popular first career Mopar® HEMI® Challenge victory in the Pennsylvania Dutch Classic at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa. on Friday, Oct. 24. Daniels, driving his 1968 Dodge Dart, bested Jim Pancake, of Delaware, Ohio, in a battle of the red lights as both drivers fouled. Daniels took the win after Pancake, also steering a '68 Dart, went "red" first.
Daniels' twelve-year-old son Jimmy crewed for him at the event. "I lost it when I saw Jimmy running up to the car with tears in his eyes," an emotional Daniels remarked after the race.
Charlie Westcott Jr., driving his 1968 Warfish Barracuda, and his father and fellow competitor, Charlie Westcott Sr., both of Parma, Mich., enjoyed a record-setting outing at Maple Grove. Junior tripped the lights with an 8.408 ET and then a record 8.383 in qualifying, while Senior's stick shift Barracuda knocked on the 160 mph door with speeds of 159.66 and 159.95 in qualifying. Junior qualified No. 1, with Senior starting in the No. 2 spot. It was all for naught in the semifinals when Junior spun his tires out of the gate and lost to Pancake and then his dad red-lighted against Daniels.
Despite his early exit Westcott Jr., who had a run of four consecutive wins snapped at the Columbus HEMI Challenge event in September, was able to secure the 2008 Mopar HEMI Challenge points title with his semifinals outing.
