“BIG DADDY” MEETS WITH OBAMA!

Respected Time Magazine journalist Mark Halperin provided pool coverage of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s visit to the Ellis Soda Shoppe & Grill in Abington, Virginia today.  His report appeared on the publication’s “The Page” online outlet.  What made Obama’s visit noteworthy for CompetitionPlus.com was his unplanned meeting with drag racing legend Don “Big Daddy” Garlits who, along with his wife, Pat, was simply visiting the area and did not know of Obama’s being there in advance.

Garlits, who once ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Republican, later told Halperin that he’d been impressed by Obama, and was “frustrated with Washington and undecided between Mr. Obama and Senator John McCain.”

After reporting on the grass roots effort to draft announcer Bob Frey for president in our recent U.S. Nationals coverage (Okay, there was one banner to that effect!) we’d like to assure our readers that this will probably be the end of our political coverage.  Unless, of course, either or both of the major party candidates decides to launch an all-out effort to attract drag racers and fans to their sides!
