Tim Wilkerson found that out last week when he overtook Ashley Force for the lead in the first phase of the championship standings. This was the first time he’d led any points chase in his life.

During the post event press conference he referred to the invaluable assistance Don “the Snake” Prudhomme has provided with the availability of second-hand parts.

He even got his name and his story in USA Today. This was a major accomplishment for Wilkerson, who has largely battled the multi-car teams of Don Schumacher and John Force Racing.

This is where the miscue began for Wilkerson.

In black and white for the world to see, the paper read, “It all started coming together last fall. Wilkerson reached the semifinals in two of the final three events before forming a resource alliance with powerhouse Don Schumacher Racing, home to competitors Ron Capps, Gary Scelzi and Jack Beckman.”

“I’m looking at that an I said to myself, ‘what in the &*^%?” Wilkerson asked.

Wilkerson took the snafu in stride because at least his sponsor’s name was correct. But, he couldn’t leave the situation at that.

Wilkerson immediately called Schumacher and left a message for the other “Don”.

Wilkerson then left the following message, “Even when I do good, you get the credit.”

Then he hung up.

“He’ll call me back,” Wilkerson mused. “We’re always messing with one another like that.”
