IMG 4289The setting had completely changed and 13 days had passed, but none of that bothered veteran Funny Car driver Ron Capps.

Capps was all smiles because on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, he defeated John Force to win the Lucas Oil Nationals which were postponed at Brainerd, Minn., on July 17.

Capps had a 4.026-second lap at 320.36 mph to beat Force’s 4.126-second effort.

“It was hard waiting all this time, but it was cool knowing I was going to race Force,” Capps said. “You’re going to do it in Indy of all places on a Saturday night under the lights. Usually you get the ladder and wait for the next morning and we had to wait this long. Then Force comes up with the stuff at this press conference for the Traxxas (Saturday) about how I was the guy he beat for his first Ford win in Brainerd and it’s only natural that he should get a Ford record by winning at Brainerd again against me. I was like sh**, we should just give you the trophy then right?”

When Force won at Seattle Aug. 3, it was his 78th win in a Ford, which tied him with NHRA Pro Stock legend Bob Glidden as the winningest Ford driver in any motorsports series.

Although Force struggled at Indy Friday and on Saturday afternoon, Capps wasn’t taking anything for granted.

“People were like, they are having problems, they smoked the tires,” Capps said. “I just thought (those people) obviously don’t know Jimmy Prock and John Force, especially John Force. He can work magic. I don’t know how he does it, but you never count him out. I figured they were going to run a 3.99, I really did. With that all being said, (Saturday) just seemed like another two weeks. There was a threat of rain, we were waiting, waiting and he had lane choice and I couldn’t wait to get it over with.”

This was Capps 43rd career win – fifth at Brainerd International Raceway and third in a row. It was also his second win of the season as he also won at Epping, N.H., June 26.

When Capps captured the win over Force he contacted Jed and Kristi Copham, the owners of BIR since 2006.

“Right away I called them and left a voicemail that we won their race, finally two weeks later,” Capps said. “That trophy is going to go to all the NAPA stores and make its rounds in Minnesota. I want the fans to come down and have fun with it. Then, it is going to go to Jed and Kristi and I want something put up with that trophy out in the Zoo (Campground) however they can do it because that’s where it belongs. It is cool to win here and the third one in a row, it’s just crazy what Rahn Tobler does with a race car. I’m just lucky to be driving the thing.”
