Edwards is not racing this season after selling his car and entire operation to Chris McGaha in the offseason. Jason Line admitted he did talk to Edwards before competing in the 2014 Mile-High Nationals this weekend at Bandimere Speedway.

“Mike is a great racer and other than the Dodges he has been the guy to beat up here (in Denver),” Line said. “I talk to him once and awhile and he really gave me some words of encouragement before we came here and I appreciate that.”

Line did turn some heads Saturday when he grabbed the No. 1 qualifying position from Johnson, who has been dominant at Bandimere Speedway the last several seasons.

Line clocked a 6.924-second lap at 198.70 mph. He meets Steve Kalkowski in round one.

“That run, yes,” Line said when asked if he expected his top qualifying run. “Coming into the weekend, I didn't really expect that we would be No. 1. I did feel like we would run better than we have been lately. I can’t tell you how hard everybody has been working at the shop. It’s been a tough grind, but we are tired of running bad and tired of losing. At some point, you get kicked enough and you get up and do something about it. We are definitely at that point. I didn’t think we would be No. 1, but I knew that we would be good.”

This was Line’s first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 36th of his career. This was Line’s second No. 1 qualifying spot at Bandimere, the other coming in 2006. Johnson is No. 2 on the ladder at 6.928 seconds.
