"The Avenger has been an awesome race car," said Johnson. "This new car is going to be an even more awesome race car. It's going to be the best Pro Stock car ever built."

"I know that Mopar and Dodge are real excited to unveil our new car," said Johnson’s  teammate Jeg Coughlin. "We'll have to see what comes out from underneath the covers."

Multiple sources have confirmed with CompetitionPlus.com the identity of the unnamed factory hot rod is the Dodge Dart, much to the chagrin of many Mopar fans who clamor for the Challenger. The official unveiling is expected at the NHRA Gatornationals in two weeks.

The Dart replaces one of the most successful Mopar Pro Stock body styles ever fielded, the four-door version of the Avenger.

The Avenger made its debut at the 2010 NHRA Winternationals and followed the debut with championships in two of its four seasons of participation. It scored 27 national event victories and recorded 28 pole positions. A two-door version of the Avenger captured the 1994 championship.

“We believe the Dodge Avenger body is among the most successful Mopar race bodies ever,” said Dale Aldo, Mopar’s Motorsports Director. “The Avenger body was produced using in-house Chrysler Group technology, in conjunction with production engineers, and helped Mopar claim back-to-back Pro Stock championships. The new body set to debut at Gainesville was developed in the same manner, with Chrysler Group race and production engineers working hand-in-hand, and we are excited to see what it can do in 2014.”

Johnson drove his Avenger to a championship to conclude what has been the most successful body style he’s campaigned since he started racing professionally in 1996.

The next two weeks are expected to be a whirlwind of preparation for the unveiling of the new Jerry Haas-built car on the Thursday before the NHRA Gatornationals. He will be in the wind tunnel in Detroit all this week with his new car as well as the one slated for Coughlin. The cars will make their maiden voyages next weekend at Gainesville Raceway.

The third Dart is expected to come from Lazarus Race Cars for point leader V. Gaines and debut shortly after Gainesville.

For Johnson, there is little apprehension about parking the car which won the latest NHRA event.

“Last year in Gainesville, I won the event in my championship car,” Johnson explained. “We made 12 runs at Rockingham and brought out the new car [which we raced in Phoenix] and doubled up at the K&N. I got a great crew, no apprehension.”
