xpsThis week the American Drag Racing League announced their Extreme Pro Stock division would return for a fifth full season as part of the eighth-mile series. Next week another group of mountain motor Pro Stock racers plan to announce they’re headed in a different direction.

Dean Goforth, one of three Pro Stock drivers spearheading the movement, revealed to CompetitionPlus.com that a group of select racers will compete in a limited series with the International Hot Rod Association. The official announcement is expected to come at the Performance Racing Industry trade show, December 12 – 14, in Indianapolis.

“We are looking at a ten-race schedule and we are paying for it ourselves,” confirmed Goforth. “Some of us are doing this to get the boat afloat, and me, Pete Berner and Kevin Bealko are working together on this.”

Goforth said the decision to fund their class has drawn criticism.

“Yeah, you have those who are calling us a rich boys club,” Goforth said.

According to a copy of the proposal obtained by CompetitionPlus.com, the total investment for the class will be $30,000, with at least twelve racers expected to participate. The total amount paid in will be paid back out to the racers.

“We already have seven drivers who have paid their share,” Goforth added.

Goforth wouldn’t say that his group gave up on eighth-mile Pro Stock racing, namely with the ADRL.

“Eighth-mile drag racing gave up on us,” Goforth said. “Where are we going to go? Do you know anywhere that is going to have eighth-mile drag racing? Every day we work out in the oil patch…but the first time they don’t pay me, I don’t go back anymore.

I fooled around with this bunch for a year, won four races, and haven’t gotten paid a dime. You think I want to go back over and get me some more of that?”

The Goforth team, comprised of Dean and son Cary, won two ADRL races [Houston, Rockingham] and two X-DRL events in 2013. The X-DRL folded before the completion of the 2013 season leaving a score of racers unpaid, including the Goforths.

Goforth said the group doesn’t foresee any problem filling the remaining five positions.

“We don’t necessarily have to have twelve cars,” said Goforth. “They [IHRA] want a ten-car program. I talked them into at least 12 cars.”

The proposal said the group won’t have to travel to Canadian-based events and the first season will essentially be on a pay-to-play basis. The IHRA, according to the proposal, will do its best to fully fund the class in 2015 with a possible expansion to an open 16-car field.
