AJ BLISTERS TRACK RECORD DURING PRE-MILE HIGH PRO STOCK TEST

Veteran Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson has enjoyed plenty of success at NHRA’s Mile-High Nationals.

Johnson has won at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., just outside of Denver, in 2007, 2009, and 2010. Last year he lost in the final round on a redlight to Mike Edwards.

A year ago, Johnson set the track record at 6.955 seconds in his second-round win over Greg Anderson.

During testing Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning at Bandimere, Johnson unofficially shattered the track record elapsed time, making runs of 6.915 and 6.925 seconds.

Those numbers are even more impressive considering Bandimere Speedway is 5,860 feet above sea level.

“We had been running 6.96, 6.95 the first couple of runs and we were not making very good runs,” said Johnson in an interview with Competition Plus.com Wednesday morning. “We knew we could improve it a little bit, but we didn’t know if we could go that fast or not, but we are very happy with it.”

Johnson said there are several other Pro Stock drivers testing at Bandimere, including Jeg Coughlin, V Gaines and Ron Krisher. The 2012 Mopar Mile-Nationals are set for July 20-22 at Bandimere.

“We felt like we could go 92 and this morning’s run (Wednesday) was just a little better at 91 and the air was just a tick better,” Johnson said. “The first run at 92 (Tuesday evening) we had the exact same air as we ran in last year during eliminations. That 91 (elapsed time) was the fastest run of the test session. I think the quickest anybody else has been is 96 or 97. I do not remember who said it, but someone said we probably do not have a reason to come to the race if you are going to run numbers like that (6.915).”

Johnson said the plan was to test at Bandimere Tuesday, Wednesday and half of Thursday.

In addition to his Mile-High Nationals victories, Johnson also has been runner-up last year, 2008 and 2002 at the event. What’s more, he has been the top qualifier at Bandimere in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

All those accomplishments aren’t lost on Johnson, especially since the Mile-High Nationals are a Mopar title-sponsored race and he runs a Team Mopar Dodge Avenger.

“We always test a lot here (at Bandimere) to just try to prepare for the Mopar race,” Johnson said. “We want to do well for our sponsor and try to win this race every year. This is a very, very important race.”

Despite his testing success, Johnson wasn’t making any bold predictions for the remainder of test session.

“I do not know if we will (Wednesday) go faster than that 6.915 because the air is getting a little worse as the day goes along,” Johnson said. “You will slow down a little bit because of that and I think we are going to try a couple of more engines, but who knows?”

According to Johnson, he will make two to three more passes Wednesday and a couple more Thursday.
