PSCA LEADER REACTS TO FONTANA CLOSING

The Pacific Street Car Association’s Spring Break Super Show March 9-11 at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., has been canceled.

According to Mel Roth, PSCA’s president, PSCA had no choice but to cancel the event at Fontana because of unforeseen issues at Auto Club Dragway.

Operations have been suspended at Auto Club Dragway according to a statement on the track’s Web site, autoclubspeedway.com. Seizing operations was a result of a problem people had with noise at the track.

A statement from the track read as follows: “A Superior Court has suspended operation of the Auto Club Dragway. The suspension results from a successful challenge of a San Bernardino County sound standard by a group of concerned residents. San Bernardino County officials had approved an amendment to the county sound standard in 2010 to accommodate louder sound arising from races at the Dragway. The Superior Court found that the underlying environmental impact report, which the county relied on to approve the sound standard amendment, was not sufficient.

“We are currently reviewing the court ruling and evaluating our options moving forward. We hope to have more detailed information about our future operations at the dragway soon.

“The NHRA Street Legal Drags on Saturday, March 3, will be canceled.”

Phone calls and emails sent to Auto Club Dragway Thursday by Competition Plus were not returned.

“It’s unfortunate, but as of right now, the PSCA is at the mercy of the issues taking place in Fontana,” Roth told Competition Plus Thursday in an email. “The majority of our racers are based in Southern California so to lose that track would be a major blow to us. We hope the issues get sorted out and we only have to cancel the upcoming event and that we will be able to race there in May.”

PSCA is scheduled to hold an event May 18-20 at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana.

Actually, the status of Auto Club Dragway, whether it re-opens or remains closed, would have huge impact on PSCA’s 2012 season.

In addition to the May race, PSCA also is slated to compete at Auto Club Dragway June 22-24, Sept. 7-9 and Nov. 2-4. The 2012 PSCA schedule consists of eight races. Auto Club Dragway and The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway are the only two tracks hosting 2012 PSCA events.

The next scheduled PSCA race is slated for April 27-29 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
