CAPPS WANTS TO EXPERIENCE 400 MPH
Capps, who regularly burns up the asphalt at 300 miles per hour, wants to achieve 400 miles per hour on salt. And, if given the opportunity, he will gladly pilot a streamliner during next season’s Bonneville Speed Weeks in Utah.
“So many people had told me to go once and give it a try and I felt like I needed to; if only to say I had done it once,” Capps said. “I couldn’t believe the people who had cars there running already knew me. They welcomed me in and let me sit in their cars. My first day back home, after the three day experience, was a big-time reality check. When you’re out there, it’s as if you’re on another planet.”
A man can never have enough items on his bucket list. On his weekend off from racing the NAPA Auto Parts fuel Funny Car, Ron Capps added one more item to his list of things to do before kicking the bucket.

It didn’t take long for Capps to realize Bonneville is a lot different than the Brainerd venue he’ll race this weekend.
“The first thing that hit me, and when Wally Parks was alive, he always talked about Bonneville,” Capps said. “He always had that look. Bonneville was the apple of his eye. This was essentially where drag racing started. Now I know why.”
Capps attended the action as a fan and in doing so, crossed paths with many of those he’s admired over the years in drag racing.
“It was cool at the number of old drag racers that were there,” Capps recalled. “Halfway through the first day I caught the bug I’ve heard so many people talk about through the years. I had heard the stories about the quest for speed where there were those who tried to run 200 and then 300 and now 400.
Now Capps has a quest of his own.
“I’ve already been making some calls and try to get a seat,” Capps said. “I want to go 400 miles per hour in one of these streamliners. It is so similar to what we do out there now. I cannot even begin to tell you how cool it is.”
He’ll be busy this weekend in Brainerd letting his fellow nitro racers know what they're missing. Over the course of the weekend, he might make a call to North Carolina too.
“Just like I told my fellow racers about the Bakersfield March Meet, I’ll be telling anyone who will listen how much they need to experience Bonneville,” Capps said. “Plus I will have to call [Doug] Herbert, I hear he’s building one of these streamliners too. I’m kind of hooked. Plus, I think Napa Auto Parts and Don Schumacher would like to see me do it too.”
