ADRL Extreme Pro Stock points leader John Montecalvo is unapologetic about getting it on with nitrous oxide this past weekend.

In fact, he’s quite proud of it.

“We were out testing at Maple Grove (Pennsylvania) during the NEOPMA (Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association) race and some of the guys there invited us to enter their nitrous Pro Mod class,” the Center Moriches, NY-based driver explained. “They may have wished they hadn’t, though, after we made it to the final round.”

After qualifying his naturally aspirated, mountain-motored 2010 Cobalt in sixth place, Montecalvo faced off against Fredy Scriba and his nitrous-boosted ’63 Corvette to decide the NEOPMA Rumble at the Grove event winner. Montecalvo opened with a stellar .008 reaction time and ran a solid 6.34 at 218.69 mph in the final, but it was no match for the 5.98 at 237.71 put together by Scriba.

“He had a .034 light so I was out on him pretty good and usually in Pro Stock if you’ve got that big of an advantage there’s no way he’s coming around you,” Montecalvo said. “But Fredy, he went by me so fast I thought the wind was going to spin my Chevy out! All I could think was, ‘Whoa! Where did he come from?!’ and all I could see was flames so I just shut it off at that point.”

Montecalvo also stressed he had a great time with the NEOPMA teams and officials.

“We were actually testing our back-up motor, but when we went a couple of rounds I threatened them with putting our good motor in,” the man they call “Monte” joked. “But seriously, I just want to thank everyone at NEOPMA for the competition and their hospitality. We had a great time and would love to do it again sometime.”
